You’re the man Chris. I opened up my speed bleeder all the way and when I squeezed the levee it squirted real good. Took a while for it to stop just doing a drop for every lever squeeze. I guess the dirt shot out. Now I can return those slave cylinder screws back cause I don’t need to change it. They must have been over torqued cause I couldn’t remove the slave cylinder anyway, even after chiseling. Let’s all please use a torque wrench and make the job easier for the next mechanic

Great find here! I've just bought a 1998 r1200c with only 3700 miles on it, my first one, love the bike, but there's some obvious signs of tiredness... I've just received my new, bespoke braided ss brake hoses in the mail, and I'm fitting them today, but I'm hoping the original clutch line will see me through to the winter so I can do that then. This is a big help to get that job done! Cheers!

Yes, I am exhausted but I have several bikes to complete before I can take some time off to get better. Thank you for your concern. I am humbled that so many people care.

Hi Chris, just wanted to thank you for your videos, they are the best on youtube. I put 1600 miles on my dads r75/5, and it was the time of my life...i'm going to ditch the old Jet Tronic system, and upgrade to micro squirt, with new throttle bodies next year!

Thanks very much Chris for the prompt to watch another of your excellent service routines. I was once tempted to buy one of the Beemer cruisers 13 years ago, after 3 years owning a Guzzi Nevada, but after a test ride up and down the mountain on the 1200C, decided against it. Hope you manage to get a leg-man soon, to relieve the obvious workload pressure you're under. Best wishes from crisis-hit but thankfully sunny and STILL WARM, even in mid-October, Andalucia. ALAN

Hey man, thanks again for these oilhead vids. My clutch lever went limp pulling away from a stoplight this evening. B**** of a ride home that way. Lol don't see any evidence of leakage at all though. 19,000 miles.

Hi Alan, The R1200C is certainly not for everyone! I find it too low and slow for my type of riding. Hopefully this global economic crisis is over soon but I have my doubts. Be well sir, Chris

I haven‘t been able to find any information regarding the capacity of the clutch system- how many ounces do I need to refill it ???

How to know if not the handlebar master or air in the line? skip to 3:18. Also do not skimp...you do not want to change the clutch plates on this beast.

Most likely the fluid traveled down the hollow input shaft and puked into the clutch bellhousing. The clutch did not slip so no further action was taken. Thanks.

I do not know. The test ride went well with no clutch slippage so thew customer requested that I not remove the transmission. Thanks, Chris

Hey Chris, How hard is it to remove the transmission on the R1200c? And can it be removed, and the motor stay in the frame?

Hi Chris! I need to do this on a R1150RT. Obviously the slave cylinder is not as accessible as in the video. The top right bolt is barely visible with the fairing taken off. Cannot get to it with the rear wheel being off either. What's the best way to get to the cylinder? Is it by taking the tank off and lifting the tail up, strapping it to the handle bars?

This is a great video. How did you clean out the socket the slave cylinder goes in? Mine has a reddish thick slime.

Hey Chris. I see you replaced with a magura, OEM slave. Have anything to say about EMEs slave? I put an EME in, seemed fine until 2000 miles used, and it went on the highway. Bearing failed. EME replaced that I have for back up, Put stock back in, now stock went today, on the highway again. it’s done over 60,000 miles. Now I’m about to put the EME back up, and the bearing doesn’t feel smooth like the magura did. Any word about this? Thanks man, great videos always, for years!

My 2002 R1200R seems to have this slave cylinder failure. -> My front brake lever has the same symptoms - they are connected / use the same slave cylinder? Luckily I was close to home!

Wondering how one determines if it's the clutch slave or the master causing a limp lever? Wouldn't a master bypassing internally give the same symptom? Thanks!

Chris, I'm about to tackle this on a 2004 R1150RT. The service manual has an extensive list of steps including lifting the rear frame. Is this all necessary or can I remove the plastics and do what you did here?
@ChrisR.Harris
@ChrisR.Harris 7 лет назад
No, the RT is easy. See my R1100RT clutch video. Your 1150 is similar though not exactly the same. Good luck.

What about using a palm sander to vibrate the bubbles out?

I have an R850r with a snapped clutch slave arm. Non hydraulic. I think I need to remove the swing arm to gain access. Can I just remove the swing arm at the bearings or do I need to remove the final drive as well? Hoping you can help before I start undoing the wrong things!!
@ChrisR.Harris
@ChrisR.Harris 5 лет назад
You can disassemble as a whole but you will need to tear it all down to make the driveshaft fit. I wish you luck, Chris

Hey Chris , my 2003 clc with the clutch lever pulled is still dragging the clutch plate( if you rev engine the bike will rock). Should I replace the slave cylinder or am I looking at clutch replacment? milage is 36000
@ChrisR.Harris
@ChrisR.Harris 7 лет назад
If the clutch is dragging it is grabbing so I'd suspect the friction material to be OK. I'd bleed the clutch circuit thoroughly before replacing the slave cylinder. Good luck.

Chris: Is there a way to adjust the front brake calipers on a 1998 R1200C? Do you have a video on the brakes?
@ChrisR.Harris
@ChrisR.Harris 7 лет назад
They are hydraulic, no. You can only adjust the position of the brake lever relative to the hand grip. This is done with the freewheel on the lever 1-3 , some 1-4.

Dear Chris, I have a R850R comfort 2005. Which is step just before the breakdown of the slave cylinder? My clutch feels soft but I don't see any leakage from the slave cylinder. I am rather sure that the unconvinient is just behind the corner. Engaging first gear is sometimes not smooth but this is a rather common issue with the crapy getrag gearboxes. Should I dismantle the slave cylinder anyway and see if there is any leakage? Perhaps this prevents the rough breakdown on the weekend ride? Thank you for your help and sorry for the terrible English. Best regards from Italy.
@ChrisR.Harris
@ChrisR.Harris 10 лет назад
Hi, I would replace the slave cylinder even if it is not leaking. If that does not solve the problem you might need to replace the master cylinder on the left side of the handlebars. The Getrag transmission is actually very good! Good luck & Happy 2014, Chris
