Video tutorial on how to replace the BMW plastic retaining bolt on the trunk lid toolbox. This tutorial apples to various BMWs equipped with the trunk lid tool box. The part number for this particular car is 71 11 1 179 444. Be sure the verify if that is the correct part number for your vehicle by visiting RealOEM.com. The main reasons why this plastic bolt breaks is either slamming or closing the trunk too hard, over tightening, and the plastic becoming brittle with age and finally breaking on its own. This particular tutorial was done on a 1997 BMW 540i.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-razor knife
-lighter
-standard/flat screwdriver
-bolt (part #71111179444)
Procedure:
-start by heating up the razor knife with the lighter and cut a small portion of the plastic retaining ring/washer toolbox bolt
-do not cut it off entirely, cut it so it's able to be bent down and the plastic bolt can be removed from the toolbox case
-bend the recently cut plastic piece down, feed it through the hole and unthread the plastic bolt
-next remove the broken portion of the plastic bolt from the threaded insert in the trunk lid
-heat up the razor knife with the light, cut a slot big enough for the standard screwdriver to fit in on the broken portion of the plastic bolt
-unscrew the broken portion of the plastic bolt
-install the new plastic retaining bolt into the toolbox case by threading it in clockwise

Thank you so very much. I just made this simple repair with the help of your instruction and video; without it... something unnecessary may have been ripped apart or I would still be riding around with it flapping about. I especially liked the explanation as to why this breaks in the first place.

Man, thanks for this. I thought it silly that I even looked this up online and now I realize there is more to it than I anticipated. Ordering the plastic screw today along with some other parts. Thanks again!

Absolutely brilliant; thank you, got it first shot, no fuss, worked like a charm; now to find a replacement screw at a reasonable price, ... unless there is something else I can use ?

Happy to help! As for the screw, been a while since I purchased one. Maybe just put in the part number on Google and see if a cheap aftermarket option pops up.

Thanks! I managed to replace both parts with this video and your other for the threaded insert. And thanks for explaining why they break.

Glad to help out and thank you for the tip! I usually end up buying parts from the States and having them shipped over. Significantly cheaper than purchasing them locally for me, either from the dealer or parts store.
