One thing you should do is clean out the Vanos filters. These are two small gauze type filters on the side of the block. They are located on the exhaust side just in front of Cylinder # 1 exhaust ports. You will need a small inspection mirror to see them but it's a defiant must to do.

Thanks for this! Doing some due diligence for my 335 and when I saw "Vanos" solenoid was a common problem for N54 and N55, my blood pressure started to rise. Because Vanos usually means money! But now I can relax after seeing how simple this replacement is. Gotta love the simplicity of a straight 6.

Thanks for the video: I have come to the conclusion that if you decide to keep one of these vehicles you better change your oil regularly and keep the vanos clean, lots of suckers with these issues go back to the dealership and BMW mechanics throw expensive parts at it. The BMW techs love these issues and the consumer has no clue what they did to correct the problem. A huge "cash-cow" for them $$$. Most BMW owners are mechanically clueless and hopefully they build lots of knowledge on these BMW variable timing issues by watching this type of video.

Sorry bud!! But when i did this....I went ahead and removed the fan. which was one screw on my set up. Anyway it gave me plenty of room on the account of having large hands!!! Lol Definitely an important change-out for those of us crackin' the 150,000mi range!!! nicely done
@BMWFanatic
@BMWFanatic 7 лет назад
N54 Lord Yeah I would have to pull down the belly pan since the trans cooler is connected to the fan at the bottom. Coolant reservoir line runs across, so have to disconnect that too. If that was never changed or with some good mileage on the car, then that hose would crack since you have to move it out of the way. Happened to me way back in the day when I removed my fan 🤣. It's not too shabby at all to get them out - but if you have big hands then I can see that being a problem! 😀

Shon Roopnarain Yeah, but it's not really needed as you can get to them.I have the trans cooler connected on the bottom of the fan, so would have to remove the belly pan to release. So I've been having the vanos intake code/limp mode for a while now and it's gotten really bad. I can't even drive it anymore without it going into limp mode. It mostly does it when it's cold but sometimes when it's warm as well. It's very strange because there are two or three spots on my way to work in the morning that it will throw the code and go into limp mode in one of those three spots on the road EVERY morning. I've replaced the intake solenoid and also checked my oil cap. Everything is good there. I know there is a check valve on the passenger side next to the wheel and I'm going to pull it and clean it but if that doesn't work what else could be the issue? Can dirty intake valves cause this issue? I'm sure mine are a mess. I'm the second owner and I know the previous owner didn't have them walnut blasted. BTW it's a 2011 335is and I'm about to hit 100k miles. It's also spitting out and leaving black marks on the pavement behind the exhaust when I start it. You can tell every spot I've parked in at work because there are two black streaks lol. Thoughts?
@a.g.pennypacker3464
@a.g.pennypacker3464 2 года назад
I also have a 335is with just a bit more mileage than you at 128,000. Your car NEEDS the walnut blast! There may be other problems and you have a few to look forward to but priority #1 is a walnut blast. If you take it somewhere they may try to do a "chem" cleaning and that might work if they were a bit dirty but yours are going to be filthy and will need a walnut blast. After that I would recommend cleaning the valves every 30,000 minimum, especially as the car ages. With the valves clean you can narrow down any other problems after that. If you were close I could give you some pointers. A good walnut blasting should cost around $1,200 to $1,500 or you could learn to do it yourself.

Every one of these guys saying "it's so easy to replace the Vanos solenoids" doesn't tell you the most important thing - YOU NEED A COMPUTER PROGRAM to reset the Vanos system timing any time you touch it (applies whether your take them out and clean them or replace them). Through the DME the car has to relearn the positioning of the new solenoid. Otherwise, the check engine light comes on and the car runs really rough and maybe stalls out. So if you don't have the computer program to do this reset, then take it to a mechanic and don't try this as a DIYer. BMW Fanatic - would be great if you gave your viewers ALL THE INFORMATION. Sure, everyone has a 10mm socket. But not everyone has a BMW computer program that is also required for the job.

I’ve noticed that my car has been jerking forward at complete stops and was wondering if it could be because of the solenoids?

@@williamsanderson9751 so if you do more research on RU-vid I’ve heard that you need to replace the vanos solenoid on your BMW. If this doesn’t work, there are solenoids that need to be replaced on the actual transmission case which are the (Mechatronic solenoid). These may fail but once replaced people have reported that this fixed their issue when it comes to the jerking forward when coming to a stop. Now I have a BMW 525xi e60 with the all wheel drive (105,000 miles) and have not had this issue whatsoever. Not sure if it’s because it’s the Xi model but I do notice that this car does not jerk. Have a great day.

Emanuel Maceo if you cant afford to replace a Vanos, and have to beg on RU-vid like a petulant child, you shouldn’t be driving a BMW. It’s called living within your means.. Two words- Honda Civic.
