No need to pull the head of the actuator off the motor. just remove the C lip on the white gear shaft, pry off the staked plate, and open the access to the black gear your going to replace. The damaged gear will lift right out. Grease the new one, and install. Ive done this 5 times on my E83, 280,000 miles and counting.

crazy how simple this is. I was about to buy a BMW that showed all these lights and the guys said yeah the dealer wanted 2k to fix all the lights. Damm I think imma try and still buy that car and hopefully it works for me 2... thank u bud
You should share what fault codes did you get and this fixed it. Many people might have issue with abs speed sensor but go after this instead... btw nice vid my friend and tanx for sharing👍
My 4x4 light is on and my speedometer and cruise control are not working would this be the same issue ? I have replace all the wheel speed sensors and still nothing any help ?
I have the same problem yesterday with my 2004 X3. Is it drivable or better to wait to get it fixed. After stopping at a red light and then trying to give gas when its green again it jerks for 3 seconds and is not smooth.
Hello. I changed the plastic for a bronze gear in the actuator and there was no 4x4 light for 1 day but the next day it was back. Do you know what I need to do now? Thanks.
Yeah it can still be ran just the abs won't work in case of a hard stop you will skid because the brakes will loćK up but other than that you can makr it cross coutry without it
Hi even after doing this the issue still remains the same. We changed the new gear in the transfer case for x3 e83 engine. All the lights are still on. Diagnostic system says now 5EE5 HYDRAULIC UNIT PRESSURE sensor internal fault, 5EE2 HYDRAULIC UNIT PRESSURE INTERNAL FAULT AND 5EB3 control unit, power supply DSC sensor. What this entails of? Please advise
My BMW X3 also shows Abs, Brake and 4x4 sign when in motion between 80-100KM..after mechanic said the problem was sensor the rear back we changed it and yet still same problem. But the diagnoses machine didn't show anything about the transfer case. So what do you think I should do.
Dipo Daramola thank you for subscribing! This is a common problem across X3 platforms. It is most likely your problem has to do with the transfer Case Actuator Gear based on the symptoms you’re experiencing. No OBD Scanner nor the car Ecu is able to pinpoint exactly where the fault is, therefore you will get all 3 warning lights on the dash when the 4x4 engages. I would remove the transfer Case Actuator and open it up and check if the plastic gear is damaged. If so you can buy a replacement gear for it for just a few dollars, link in description. I would give this a shot considering it’s not a lot of work or money involved in removing and/or replacing the damaged gear. If you are not too comfortable doing it yourself, you can get your mechanic to do the labor for you! Let me know how it goes!
@@builddrive7023 I have soughted it out. It was the bearing that was eating the censor which makes it brings out sign. I changed the bearing and bought a new censor. All is working fine now.
Hi good video, I just noticed the actuator you pulled off has only 1 electrical connectors, but there are 2 harnesses hanging out when you pulled it out, so it is only 1 electrical connector being used?. I have the same issue with an X3 2006, but I see mine has 2 electrical connections. I am a new subscriber. Thanks,

Quick question: Once the gear is replaced and everything buttoned back up, do you need to reset codes or battery to remove lights, or will they go out on their own?
Lukas Scott hey Lukas! Glad you found value out of the video. No need to reset codes or disconnect battery. The Ecu detects the fault only when present which is why at start up you wouldn’t see the codes. If fault has been fixed, you should no longer have any lights on dash! Hope that helps! I got them around the same time as the triad of death and have done everything I can think of related to the codes (usual suspects, short of paying an arm and a leg for some possibly-not-the-issue points). Any suggestions in your experience? No luck in forums either
@@lukasscott2970 I'm sitting at 120k miles on my X3, I have not experienced codes PO/171/174. I take it your X3 is running either rich/lean, I would start by paying close attention to the symptoms to get an idea of where to start looking first but in summary I w would check thoroughly all air/fuel delivery components such as (PCV hoses, EGR VALVES, AIR Intake, Disa valves) make sure you have no air leaks to be found, check fuel components such as fuel filter , fuel pump & fuel injectors to make sure you have no problems with fuel delivery. have you already checked all of these?
@@builddrive7023 How about replacing the plastic gear for a metal gear? Is this gear moving or working with other plastic parts, or goes against other metal parts? Just making sure if I get a metal gear I wont mess up other parts before I even order it.

I removed left hand side bolts and only loosened right hand bolt from there I sort of pulled it down and out of the way to create the necessary room for me to remove the actuator.
Thanks for the video. I am really struggling to get the 18mm through bolt out of the cross member. The exhaust piping is in the way and I cannot get anything in there. I've also tried an 18mm wrench and just cannot get enough leverage. Any tips?
So my abs, brake, and 4x4 light just came on, but the brake light is in yellow and not red…do you think it’s still my transfer case actuator? Btw it’s a 2008 X3
*You can try to hook up temporary power to the actuator to confirm it’s still a working unit. *Check the 2 plugs that supply the actuator. Make sure there’s no damage to the plugs/wiring.
@@builddrive7023 thanks you for you help it is very much appreciated the problem start when i put a used transmicion the 4x4 light came on but a drove 2 mi end then the light goes of i make to many trips and then the 3 lights came on i saw you video and i put a new actuator the lights o out but when i start to driven the light came back
Serafin Arizmendi you replaced the entire actuator assembly? With a new one? Used one? Did you check if the gear inside was chewed up on the old actuator?
This repair is pointless. You remove the effect of the fault, not its cause. The rack is made of a very hard material and wear is not without a reason. It's like treating a tooth with painkillers.
