Excellent comparison - Really needed. Nobody is doing such comparisons between cars from different segments. Please do a similar 3 series vs 5 series comparison as well!! Highly interested to know if the sophistication of the 5 wins vs the agility of the 3 - kind of a similar situation in the X3 vs X5 dilemma :)
I was searching for comparison of these two models and found your video, what a gem! Never seen anyone who made such a good scientific comparison video. I'm totally satisfied and will be at a dealership with some knowledge 😃
In my 55 years driving history, I have owned an X5 3.0d auto for the last 20 years, and just passed 150k miles. Despite it's outdated 5 speed GM gearbox, it's been my most enjoyable and rewarding motoring experience, even compared with a 1972 Lotus in my younger days. The X5's blend of comfort, practicality and performance is second to none, and I'm just hoping the wife will let me buy a replacement very shortly before I'm too old, 'cause frankly no other SUV cuts the mustard like a 3l X5.
Hey I concur to that - especially the facelift version with stage1 modding, that diesel is like a rocket tank. Never had so much fun with any other car... except e39 3.0D with the same configuration :D One major drawback though is that those cars rust sooner than their running capacity wears off (if properly maintained). Those doors accumulate water and eventually you have to either replace or bore a hole in them and repaint, which translated to extra care and effort. Other than that e53 & e39 in carbon black look visually stunning even today. Very gracefully cars.
Update: I took notice of all your comments & advice, thanks. A new X3 40i is expected at month end, having realised the growth in size over the past 20 yrs, and wife is happy too!
I had this doubts in 2019. My heart was telling me X5 but my head the X3. You’ve put things perfectly, as usual, Thomas. The X5 is a bit more sophisticated, mostly on certain details like softer leather, better seats or certain optional extras. But for a daily use the X3 has better driving since feels more lighter, is easier to park and the price difference didn’t seem justifiably to me. That said, I hope someday I can afford to move up towards the next X5 gen.
I own a X3 30i 2020 and I rented a X5 30d 2020 for a week so both Gxx pre LCI I think X3 is the clear winner to me: - more agile - faster (the X5 above 200kmh is a pain…) - easier to sit in, you climb onto the X5, you sit in the X3, seat is exactly at the height of my bottom - rear seats: there are the same width !!! I measured it in case I wanted to set 3 child seats (i have 2 kids), Basically the second row external is further from the door in the X5. - Trunk: the X5 is a pain, I hated this tail gate. Thomas is 1m86, I am only 1m80, couldn’t reach the front end of the trunk. And guess where things end up after driving/breaking … :D for a family, X5 brings zero benefit for a large/tall driver, yeah, driver will be more comfy in the X5
What a way to start a review. "Does size really matter" really had me laughing😂 Great review as always Thomas and I'd personally take the X5 but with the M sport package🔥
Great review Thomas. I have been watching your channel for a couple of years now and have been waiting for this comparison. I owned a 2018 X5 M50d, great car, lots of power but nightmare to park in many places due to the size. When I changed this year I looked at a new X5 but as the newer model was even longer and wider I opted for the X3 30d MSport instead. The X3 is not much smaller inside the car, there is more than enough power, the tech is great and I feel it drives more like a car than the X5 so I can be more aggressive around the corners than I was with the X5. Parking and narrow country roads are way better with the X3 as well. After 3 months I am very happy with the X3 and don’t miss the X5 at all.
Thanks, I needed to read this. My wife has just been told she can have an X5 company vehicle and she is not confident at parking. I will advise her to opt for the X3.
I currently own an older X5 which is in the shop; I have a 2021 X3 as a loaner. I find the X3 with the 4 cylinder is plenty fast and significantly lighter and hence more nimble than the X5. I thought the 4 cylinder might be too loud at idle, but from inside, you can't even tell it's running when at a stop. Main downside is that the X3 seats seem a bit too narrow for my taste.
@@Niles-Guy Ever owned one? I've owned 8 and they've all been very reliable. Like all cars, they require maintenance and sometimes things break. My car was in for an air bag recall, not because it broke. BMWs are expensive to maintain, I will admit because parts are expensive, come from Germany and are in many cases, over-engineered.
I own the newer x5 45e plugin. I’m telling you please drive that before you make any assumptions sheesh it’s just so good at so many modes. It’s SOOOOOOOOOOO much smoother and quieter.
@@LafemmebearMusic it’s a fact that bmw breakdown consistently. Every owner I’ve known has stated this. Even mechanics have warned stay away from bmw or Landrover . And as for your new phev…congrats but that too will end up breaking down especially after warranty
I bought 2022 x3 xdrive msport 3.0, gas mileage was very important, and have had my m240i convertible, the power wasn't a big factor in my choice, only one disappointment, no adaptive cruise control for the price
He says it’s the same 6 cylinder engine.. umm no it’s not spec wise. The x3 m40i has 500nm torque plus a 48 mild hybrid system. The x5 40i doesn’t have this, until the new model, comes out with the crap i8 info system which I prefer version 7.
X5 sucks without rear seats reclining, on other side X3 is so good with reclining rear seats for families with kids and relaxing on long trip. Power is most same.
I like the front face of the G01 X3. Understated and the kidneys aren't obnoxiously large. But, given the fact that I needed space for my family, I ended up with the X5 (although E70 40d. The width does definitely count in the X5's favour, but it makes it an absolute pain to park in tight multi storey car parks.
My 4th BMW will again be an X3 Sport. I moved from my beloved X3 to the X5 to drive grandchildren around (yes, laugh aloud, 78 year are old German grandma here), but soon missed the agility and simple “Fahrvergnügen“ with my boring X5. Now I’m returning to the 2023 X3 (currently on the ocean). I’m very excited. BTW, to those denigrating BMW reliability, I say baloney. Maintained my BMW’s well and never, ever had a problem over the many years (since 2006). Used to drive VW before that, no comparison. I can’t think of driving any other make (spoken as a born Münchener Kindl and somewhat prejudiced).
X5 is by far the better car. I love the M40i, but the interior appointments of the X3 are a complete let down. The X5 X drive 40i fully loaded is the best option. Now that is 15 to 20K more than the X3.
So if the X3 is barely bigger than the X1, and the X5 is barely bigger than the X3, does that mean the X5 is barely bigger than the X1? BMW need to work on their packaging.
I just got my BMW3 2023. Never had a luxury car and it rides like a dream. So comfortable too. I just love it. Question. Premium gas recommended. I read so many conflicting comments of which gas to use. Recommended vs required????
X-3 looks better in appearance. For the price, the X-3 is a better buy! The $10,000 difference made my mind up on purchasing the X-3 plus better MPG and I haven't regretted it! The X-3 2022 model is redesigned and different from the earlier X-3 so no comparison there.
I have a 2022 X3 M40d and 2021 X1 2.0i X-Drive and have owned 3.0d M-Sport X5’s in the past. I agree with others that the X5 has a wider, more comfortable and sophisticated cabin and with air suspension a better ride. The X3 in comparison is a far more sportier SUV, with a cabin to match, more so with the optional ‘M’ seats which are an extra cost option in the U.K. but are extremely comfortable and worth that extra cost IMO. Practicality between both models is hardly noticeable, with both accommodating 5 adults comfortably. For me it came down to price. The X3 does everything the X5 does but the X5 is a more cosseting and comfortable environment and cabin to be in, is that comfort worthy of the premium cost over a X3?……you decide.
I have owned many BMW models starting with a BMW 1600, which made me a BMW man for ever, after 3 x 5 series’s tourer’s & 2 x 3 series sot tops i now have a x3 M sport suv 🙀just great plenty big enough for golf clubs & a wonderful drive thanks for your comparison really enjoyed it, i made the right choice there is a smile on my face when ever i drive 😀
I don't know why but the X5's knee room in the rear is ridiculously small, especially for a car of this size. Every Audi Q3 or even a Skoda Scala has more to offer ...
i own this gen X5, yes the rear seat room isn't amazing but worth noting the cushion itself is long and the comfort of the rear seats is very high. as long as you're not transporting very tall people its sufficient.
Genuinely great video looking at the true differences and similarities between these units. You were not just a talking BMW brochure which many reviewers seem to be
Love your comment, "Listen & Repeat"..that took me back to my high school German classes when my instructor also said "listen and repeat"..."hören und wiederholen Sie". I really appreciate this X3 & X5 comparison. Particularly interesting was your conclusion that rear seat passenger space between the two is nearly identical. Both are "possibilities" to replace our aging Volvo V60 Cross Country. I also viewed your x5 45e review...and to me, if ONLY a x3 plug in hybrid was available here in the U.S....that might be the perfect fit for us as here in the Midwest US, it's a bit too soon for a full EV due to minimal available charging infrastructure. Thank you Thomas.
So far I have only watched 2 of your videos and have found them very informative and captivating. (Of course I subscribed.). I like the ride on the autobahn when you are driving 125 mph and driving through the tunnels where you can see the ambient lighting in daylight. Very well done. You are becoming my go to resource for Mercedes and BMW. Thank you very much!
Thank you Thomas. This is the comparative video I have been waiting for years. I will get both if I have the money. If not, I will get the X5 because it is the all round winner.
I like them both but I prefer the X5’s looks and profile. I can’t fit comfortably in the M40i and it’s too small inside but quality on both is first rate. I need the extra room on cargo area and I have dogs. But the ‘23 X5 doesn’t have that amazing B85 w/hybrid power. Why not? The M40i’s engine makes it feel like a sports car. Good comparison. 👍
The six cylinder diesels are the engines to go for with shocking levels of torque, a better drive, 60's mpg and the highest resale values. BMW's best kept secrets. You will not be disappointed !
We went with the X3 M40i in May 2024 because we would need to step up to the X5 M60i to get the M Sport Differential. Also the I6 should be more balanced than the the V8. The X5 should be more plushed and comfortable but the X3 does just fine.
Great review! Personally I prefer X5 - It’s more elegant, brutal and comfortable! One more thing - X3 fits more to younger people and woman’s , but X5 - for gentlemen’s from 40..
Another great video. Great comparison and super useful to compare different models within the same brand! I've watched this channel for a long time, hugely underrated: consistently delivers quality content
Lauf kultur! Great comparison review as always Thomas. Can't wait to hear and see your thoughts on the 2023 X7 LCI too. Be curious to know if the boosted i6 B58 (375 hp) is sufficient for this larger SUV, as well as your impressions of the new, detuned S68 in the M60i. Perhaps another "is bigger always better" comparison of X5 to X7?
Maybe for those who haul a trailer with a lot of weight a Double dually crew cab V10 twin turbo diesel with all wheel drive or V8 turbo,10'-12' long box truck bed , goose neck and standard trailer tow hitches and all the bells, whistles, and lights!!!😁 I know it would be called the BMW series x 10 HDT(heavy duty truck) maybe and the lighter trucks the series x 8-9 LT (light tuck). Of coarse with a tilt forward front end like the Peterbilt semi trucks for easier accessibility for maintenance with locking hood release latches!
I have test drive them both for a day, the X5 feels much more premium! Cabin difference is much bigger than is mentioned in this video. X5 had far more better seats and everything feels like a big luxury SUV Also chassis and Technology wise the difference is very big, X5 has al Aluminium dual whishbone suspension, even the subframe is Aluminium.
@@willemb8689 I think I don't wanna drive a huge car that handles like a minivan. I don't wanna be in a car that is too anemic when it comes to handling and acceleration. On the other hand after driving 2020 4 cylinder X3 I was impressed with the technology, with screens and to some extent the engine. Some people say that BMW intentionally "downplays" their Horsepower numbers so that X3 was pretty fast. However if a much larger X5 has the same acceleration I would not wanna buy it
I know , BMW should make a crew cab, extended cab or single versions, 4x2 or 4x4 pick up trucks with a hood scoop option, lifted with high ground clear stock , and a short 6' box or long box 8' truck bed. Then offer a V6 straight six turbo charged all the way to a large V8 or V8 turbo diesel dually!!! Ohh with descent fender flares and all terrain tires. With classic modern BMW front end design. Maybe even a dually diesel version for heavy towing. With all the bells, whistles, and lights!
Germans are not short people yet they make a car, suv, that six foot tall people could not sit behind two other 6 foot tall people comfortably for any distance of travel let alone a long distance. these are two seaters. not even kids less than ten will feel comfort.
Hi I want to say such a great video! Also as an owner of gps timing gear and a 2021 BMW X5 45e gotta say you should actually test these number on 0to60. I have repeatedly pulled 4.9 seconds to 60 and sometimes 4.789. I also know car and driver and motor trend also got the same 4.7 seconds. I totally agree with you about the smaller feeling of the x3 , just drove one for loaner recently exactly same vehicle, yes the fast one as a loaner! Great video, I love both vehicles but the x5 gives me so much in the crushing and doesn’t feel much less sporty from the x3. Plus I have the plug-in and I get to drive electric most of the week and drive fun on weekends.
is it possible to flatten seats & create what honda calls "relax/refresh" mode in any of these cars, like in honda magic seats, as in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nu25xQXJv14.html . thank you
I owned a X3 but now have an older X5 there is no comparison. By far the X5 is better vehicle. X5 is a muscle car that handles and hugs the road. It’s a strong build whereas the X3 felt very thin and a little too light for my taste. As well the X3 didn’t perform well here in Chicago with the winter months. It’s definitely a X5 as the winner.
