I loved hearing that he picked my BMW X3 M40i as the best. I have the 2020 model and till today it has not cost me a penny in any service costs. All my services have been free as BMW covers all oil and filter changes for free for the first 3 years of new car ownership. Just beautiful. It has been super reliable SUV and oh that sweet 6 cylinder engine has been so peppy. The X3 M40i main competitor is the Mercedes AMG GLC 43. When I tested these 2 great models I found that the M40i's engine is more potent and sportier than the Mercedes and also cheaper. Thanks for posting this informative video here.
Thank you very much for watching. I believed this video should be spread across many social media platforms so people can now make some better decisions
@@andrewr3403 I do not drive my X3 a lot which I bought new, I only have 6k miles on it, all trouble free. The X3 M40ihas a very good history and it is the most reliable BMW model I know. Yes, I would recommend it for a person who travels a lot. It is also a fun car to drive. I am retired and don't drive a lot, only for pleasure. I also have a second car, which is my fun and toy car, it is a 2022 Corvette Stingray. I know I am spoiled driving nice cars, but I want to enjoy life before I go.
I’d also venture the Audi SQ5 is a primary competitor. I’m looking to buy an X3 M40i if my wife decides she likes it enough, she loved the SQ5 so I think the X3 will be an even better fit considering Audi forgot to put any useful storage in the cockpit of that car. The SQ5 has sold very well. Beware M40i owners, the SQ5 with zero supporting mods and a stage one tune is putting out mid 400’s horsepower and even higher torque, they are ridiculously overbuilt and under stressed engines. I could give you the shockingly short list of parts you need to get it to 750hp. It’s pretty stunning.
I have had an X4 since 2018 and have had no issues so far! Have driven North to South of Thailand many times, hills, plains ,motorways ,rainstorms and heat. Been a great car ---so far!! Fingers crossed!
There is zero reasons for a modern car to leak or squeak. No one can tell me that BMW engineers can't find the correct sealants, or put the car together properly.
Had one of the first X5's... great car, never any problems, I6 no turbo... traded it in with 300k miles on it, survived me and 2 successive teenage drivers.. best car ever
I have a 2008 x5 with 190k. But I’ve had to fix the thermostat and water pump twice in the last 3 years, plus a ton of other work. It’s a costly beast but I still like it
Many years back, I had X3 - 2007 and now I have X5- 2022. I was happy then and I am happy now with my choices. For 5 years that I had X3, I only did the oil change and one time of alignment. that is it. I was not even needed to change the brake pads. Great car. My X5 is great so far.
I have owned several BMW'S in my 61 years of life and the last 3 were X5's and an X7. None of them were reliable. My 2020 X7 has been in the shop more than I care to admit and I am now ready to face the reality that there are better options for me. Sad but true.
In general I've observed that the early X1s that came with the 2-liter turbo petrol engines or the 2-liter turbodiesel engines paired to 8-speed Aisin torque converter gearboxes (before being replaced with 7-speed DCTs) seem to be quite reliable as daily workhorses
I think the X1 is a good reliable suv for bmw i think any bmw suv is reliable you just gotta make sure it was built in Germany and not the USA I’ve seen a lot of X competition suvs with over 100K miles 🤷🏾♂️
Have a 2016 X6 BMW, it has been 8 years and I have had zero issues. Just bought a new 2024 BMW X7 and I am pretty sure is going to be the same as long as I take care of the car.
We have a 2013 x5 with the n55 and have hd great service from this car. So much so we have kept it and bought another one, a 2018 x5 with the n55. My mother has an x5 with the b58 and I really like that engine as well. That being said we still have our n55’s and love both of them.
Honestly, I wasn't aware of the many versions of BMW "X" series vehicles! Great, comprehensive overview of them all! Glad to hear that they offer, even, an updated version of the B58 engine. One would have to consider the purchase of a newer version of one of these. Then, again, I'd have to consider Porsche, as well. Thanks again Mark!
Glad you liked it! And I appreciate your comment Thomas. Yes all drivetrains have gotten better, but for true durability and long lasting ability, a Porsche is a tough one to beat.
I was looking for a X3 m40i with low miles but I couldn't find one. I ended up buying a 2020 Porsche Macan S and I LOVE it. The X3 m40i seems to be a great ride as well. I was tired of driving a SUV (Snore Utility Vehicle) and I wanted something that would perform and be luxurious.
4 months and 8000 miles later my 2020 Macan S is still an absolute thrill to drive. It has performed flawlessly!! I love LOVE the Porsche Life. Yes, Pcar ownership is much different than any other brand I have ever owned. I don't have a suga baby but I sure could!! lolol Do yourself a favor and buy a vehicle that makes driving EXCITING! PORSCHE Life!!!
It's not the engine that's the problem, it's all the emission crap bolted onto it... Look under the hood of cars from the 80's, there was an engine, a carburettor, a battery, a distributor & spark plugs. What could go wrong?
SAV(Sport Activity Vehicle) is for the wagon design looking models like the x5, the SAC (Sport Activity Coupe) is for the coupe variants like the x6. the coupe models tend to be slightly bigger and longer than their wagon looking counter parts.
Mark how are you. Great videos. Love the info for anyone from entry level bmw interested to the experienced owner. I still have my original n63 2013 x5 xdrive50i with now 120,000 miles. Still daily driving and never had a major service catastrophic failure yet. Still original turbos and engine. Only burns 2 quarts every 5-7000 miles. I’m a very lucky one. Worst and only leak I’ve had was the upper oil pan gasket. Still a fan until I need my next one!
@@ECPP thanks. How do you feel currently about the brand Mark? I’ve been with you for years and I know about your whole host of issues with your 335i and of course your diesel X5. You were pretty fed up. Has your opinion changed at all? Would you buy a bmw again?
@@donaldbanner2185 It’s a hybrid so a lot of the time you don’t even use fuel. It’s funny what you’re saying really. One year after we got the X5 bmw asked if they could buy it back for the SAME price. So we technically could’ve driven it for free for a year with already lots of miles on it. So 0% loss of value.
My brother bought a 2022 X5 and he loves it, it's so dependable so far, only had to take it to the service department three times so far. Back window wouldn't go down, some hoses were not placed correctly and excessive noise in the back of the vehicle. All three have been taken care of and he hopes he has no major problems with it at least to 35K miles. After all he only paid $85K USD for it so it was not so expensive.
@@afarrel3195 nothing really so far apart from $99 oil changes every year at local dealer and regular DIY cabin filter changes and DIY one time engine air filter change. I will do differential fluid change next year at 50k miles. Dealers asked $700 for that service (which is rip off but I might still do it with them to save some time). Will change spark plug next year as well as DIY and that one will also cost around $70. So I will say maintenance wise it has been pretty good so far. Did a coolant change once for $200 last year but now I realize that was waste of money and not needed so early.
I just bought the 2019 G01 BMW x3 B48, about to get it fingers crossed it will be as reliable as my 2006 330d with M57D30TÜ2, it has 330k on the clock and the 9 years ive owned it, Im yet to find out if the check engine light even exists.
I had an X5 as a rental on a road trip…. Awesome. Consumer Reports had it as the #1 Mid sized luxury SUV.. I just need my Toyota to die… (which doesn’t seem likely). Maybe I just need to add it to the garage anyway.😮
i drive 2011 X5 50i for 7 years now :D you are on point wilth all those issues LOL, i spend in INDYS prob 9-10k :) and now gonna spend prob 2k to get front sunspension fixed, life is brutal but no point in spending 50k to get newer model, still same car, new car new problems XD
It's like some of the people haven't actually watch the video and just commented to hate on BMW without actually having an articulated response to the points in said video. Cringe.
@@ECPP - I have a 2010 X6M with the s63 lump. The high precision Piezoelectric fuel injectors must have the highest octane detergent fuel, always. I got cheap and pumped ARCO gas and the Reduced Power errors appeared even after one use!
hello! Just got an used 2020 x5 x40i CPO, around 30k miles. should I pay 3.5k for a 2-years warranty extension? Or 4k for 4-years warranty extension? Thanks!
I owned a 2015 until the extended warranty ran out , then sold it. Even though it was a base model, with only a couple of options, I really liked this little SUV. but after reading about a ton of problems with this motor (4 cylinder turbo) I reluctantly sold it. I didn't have any problems while owning it, but I figured it was only a matter of time.
I own a 2015 sdrive28i x3 w 110k miles zero issues knock on wood. I have a 05 3.0i with 170k. Great damn cars. Plan on getting a x3m if I ever see one in dealer auction. Paid 21k and have driven better than ever for 7 years straight.
Own two x3’s. 05 3.0i and a 2015 sdrive28i, one with 170k miles and the other with 109k. Zero engine lights, one has a small oil leak nothing major. Cant complain. Only paid $21k for both.
X3 m340i awesome crossover. X1 x2 cars for girls, especially with fwd design engines, older x1 n20 engine garbage car but much faster than new x1 with b38. I really love my beast 2016 X3 35i, last model n55 is super reliable.
What type of luxury SUV are all those BMW Xs? X1 = subcompact luxury crossover SUV X2 = subcompact luxury crossover SUV but sportier X3 = compact luxury crossover SUV X4 = compact luxury crossover SUV/SAC X5 = mid-size luxury crossover SUV X6 = mid-size luxury crossover SUV/SAC X7 =full-size luxury SUV
I've got an '06 X5 4.4i totally reliable, 170,000 miles and still runs like a swiss watch. Yeh, i can afford a new one, but why? And tell me why I need a 600+ hp SUV?
My 2023 X3 with a B48 engine is plenty quick enough, good on gas, vault solid ride. It will be paid off long before the warranty expires, and I've got free scheduled maintenance up to 36k miles. I'll have a few bucks set aside for the catastrophic repair costs everyone is so sure will happen. BTW I've had Toyota and Honda my whole life and who wants a sad boring car that will run forever lol!
I'm contemplating between the Mazda cx5 or a x3 30i 😅 but ve only had bmw all my life and I just wanted some simplicity without the headache. Now I feel I bit more assured being that you came from the opposite of me😅 so I might just stick to my bmw roots
Hi folks. Been having some buyers remorse with my car. Last week I brought a certified 2021 x3 M40i from a BMW dealership. When I test drove it I was in love. Now that I got it home not so much. It is somewhat nosy on road even in comfort mode. I previously had an x3 xdrive 2021. Was torn between purchasing an 2024 x3 xdrive and this car. did not want same car. Payment would have been close in price. Some how feel should have gotten the 2024
@@ECPP It is over. No-one speaks about it anymore. I HAVE a diesel from basically VW - but no problem. I am more interested in the longevity of the engine. And what I can do to improve it.
If you hate BMW so much why do you keep making content about them? Regardless how you feel people still love them and they are still one of the most popular cars in the world BMW will still be around for many years to come. They are going full electric anyways
I've been a BMW owner for more than 12 years, something I always advice new owners - Stay away from V4 with turbos all those fragile engines not just from BMW but other brands always brake. Also, stay away from V8s. BMW know how to build solid V6s, so stay with V6s. I wish they didnt have added turbos on the newer vehicles because turbos create a lot unnecessary heat that brakes and cracks everything made of rubber and plastic but it is what it is....
The way I get it is that if you want a really reliable car but at the same time has performance, you may have to pay the extra dollar for it because that's the sacrifice. Either you have good performance and reliability (expensive), low performance and reliability (cheap) or high performance and low reliability (cheap). BMW in the early generations used to cut cost by doing shortcuts with quality of materials which lowered durability a lot. Racing development has gone a long way and efficiency and durability of performance engines have shot through the roof. Main winners of major races of high performance engines in high endurance racing was mostly the euro-brand cars like Mercedes and BMW. This myth is akin to Buicks who are associated with elderly people being there main buyers which is not the case. BMW had a stigma but that's only because of that one generation and bad quality control prices from their executive member mistakes.
Hey there , what up, I'll get right to it, have a 2004 x5 v6 petro usedl ,( not sure which engine it is from the list you mentioned in the video) for 3 years now , had my share of issues with it , almost everyone is telling me to sell and get a Toyota or something , but 8m not giving up on it even though I have paid more on repairs than what i paid for it originally , still I think it's a cool car, i just want to know is it one of the reliable engines or not generally? Thanks nd still following your vids Ayman Kuwait
The transmission suspension and the inline 6 cylinders are ok I own one it can last good 200k miles, but the hig tec that comes around the vehicle is what's gives bad reputation
I’m in the market for an x5 e70 what do you think of the 2010 X30i it’s the last year of the natural aspirated in-line 6 first year Witt newer ish I drive and first year to come equipped with the 8 speed your opinion is invaluable thank you for the videos
Hi Nathan. Maintenance is key of course but with that last of the naturally aspirated straight sixes, it could be a decent buy from a maintenance perspective. I would still check on service records like coolant changes, T stats, water pumps and hose replacements.
When inferior plastics are used for priority parts, how does that fit the definition of a luxury vehicle. When one pays premium dollar, one doesn’t expect BS obsolescence planned based on greed at our expense. No!
Once they switched to cheaper interiors, and dispensed with the solid straight 6 cylinder engine, I stopped buying them. My first BMW's were an 1981 and 1983 635. Do not buy a used BMW with twin turbo's of any series. Get a 2017, or later, twin turbo, with a warranty.
