I found a guy named crunchysann who made a puller specifically for this ball joint, but it's $130 bucks. It's on the way to me and I'm going to try it. These are 20 yr old ball joints that went through Wisconsin winters, so if it works I'm sure it's a good product. I've been soaking it in PB blaster in the mean time.

#Nathans BMW Workshop . I had to do this on my 09/2006 X5 E53 N62. I got the 20 piece kit from FCP Euro. Lemfo'rder. That pressed ball joint was a bitch. I stopped the video at 2:00min just to tell you what I did. Im curious if we used similar methods. I disconnected the control arms and pressed the axle out the hub using an axle press. I used bungee cords to turn the rotor inwards and toward the front. With the flanges pulled down and it somewhat broken loose on the bottom edge I used PB Blaster on top and bottom. I got my old jack pipe and a 5 lb sledge and put it on top of the ball joint and gave it hell. After a few more good wacks I checked and seen it had started to move. This encouraged me alot. A couple more good blows and it came out with a loud metal clink clink clink across the pavement. I was so happy to get it out after hitting a dead end and then trying to figure out for a few days how to remove the piece of shit while out in a driveway on jack stands in the middle of November. Cold nights. Basic tools. No pneumatics or heat. Very satisfying. Pressing the axle was the only way and also gaining access from the back side and hitting it from above in my situation. It worked. Not many videos on RU-vid show what really needs to be done to complete this. I have a few more nightmares just involving the install of this kit. While torquing the nut on the bottom of the thrust arm and ball joint on the other side the threads on the nylock nut stripped. This was after everything was done to. That ball joint had to be cut off because the Meineke I brought it to couldnt even get it out with an air hammer or shop press. Lmao. Wtf. Lol. Forget the rear wheel carrier bushing mess. And would you believe that my current project right now is replacing the transfer case. Thats a whole new story. Ive worn myself out again just telling this chapter. Lol. Keep up the good work pal. James Brown... from New England... 09/2006 Build. One of the last off the assembly line. BMW X5 E53 4.4i N62 B44 - Sapphire Black/Brown Truffle int. Sport pkg.

I find your informative of removing this ball joint to be a flaw I have the exact same one on my E90 2010 model but somebody else found a easier way where you wouldn't have to remove or what you have removed

I need to do this on my f25 which looks very similar. Looks like a massive ball(joint)ache that's going to take me all day.

Great tip on hitting the axle stub side to side, I have never tried that.
@T80Delta

Agreed it was a good tip, but unfortunately did not work on my 2007 X3. I had to rent an axle press from the parts store - then it came right out using an impact gun to tighten the press!

Used a harmonic balancer puller, threaded three bolts into the hub. Still took hammering it with the impact to push it all the way through.

Great timing as I am attempting rear bearing replacement on an e90. Axle is completely seized. I believe the solution is a 10 ton hydraulic puller. The standard puller now won’t budge it. I guess I’ll know tomorrow, but I’d much rather not touch the suspension arms.

Wow, what looks like an accessible part to replace, turns out to take a lot of effort and time. Nathan, don't you ever send a sky-high garage bill, to your own address? Just for fun, and because you can? :-)

The lighter the component the less effective a hammer or air hammer is going to be. In my experience the hammer is becomming less useful as manufacturers reduce weight of components. I like the idea of sideways hammering the drive shaft. I will try that next time I have a stuck one. I use a hub puller that bolts onto the flange and presses out the shaft. Still it does not always work.

After spending a lot of time trying to remove ball joints with an air hammer, etc. - I ended up removing hubs and used a hammer when properly supporting hubs on flat surface, e53. If you already removed the CV axes it is not too much extra work with more predictable result.

Hi Nathan. On my 2002 E53 I am getting some electrical gremlins. The automatic headlights go off sometimes and the hazard lights come on by themselves. When the headlight switch is turned to the ON position no issues. The battery and charging seem strong. Also the remote door locking stops working sometimes. Then starts working again on its on a day or two later. Can you point me in a likely direction?

I’ve used it and it worked like a charm! Leave the cv axle in place, but you need to take the rotor off to remove the dust shield, so you can get the tool fully seated. They have a good video on it.
@nick9341
@nick9341 3 года назад
@@marcop7850 I never have to took off the dust shield. I have e60 and fit perfect without taking out the rotors and dust shield. Might have to for different model.

A basic "pusher " is easily made from some flate plate steel, a nut and a length of threaded rod, why struggle with it. Also how are you going to get axle in ?? Mine wouldn't pull through hub far enough to get axle nut on, good luck with that !!

Knocke mine out of the E53 with a 4 lb sledge, using the handle of my pickle fork as a punch. Just dont use a nice pickle fork when you do it.
