*BNSF Train vs Padre Fans (Almost hit) MUST SEE!*

So i was in downtown San Diego CA last week and witnessed a BNSF train blocking San Diego Padre fans from the baseball game on the other side of the train. You will see fans running across the tracks 5ft from a moving train while the engineer blows the horn, daring individuals going under and over the train, and overall crazy senseless people risking there lives to rush to a baseball game.
Now what would you do in this situation?

+e952ct the train could've sat there all day and there's not a damn bit of recourse, monetary or otherwise, the people could get. They are trespassers and should be treated as such. Ticketed first, but hopefully they resist and start physically fighting back, in which case they get the fat ticket and prison time and/or a few lead implants.

As an update, a pedestrian bridge (seen under construction at the beginning of the video) was built and now allows people to safely cross the tracks uninterrupted by trains. On a different note, people forget (or don't know) that crossing railroad tracks at grade is a legal privilege, and respect for safety and the law MUST take precedence over the need to cross the tracks. The tracks are railroad property, after all.
@wb6wsn
@wb6wsn 2 года назад
A few years ago I researched Nebraska law and found that the State had a section of the vehicle code that was below Federal law but superseded all Nebraska local laws. This section defined that a train, moving or stopped, may not block a grade crossing for more than 20 minutes. Obviously, I did not research EVERY State's code, but there is usually little change from State to State. Practically, this means that although the rails and roadbed at a grade crossing are Federally regulated, there are some things that can be regulated at a lower level, and that a Railroad Company must comply with the hierarchy of ALL levels. We may now return to our ten-year reverie of unsupported opinion and fan-driven fantasy.

I've always been amazed at the sheer idiocy of this type of behavior. I used to work for the railroad and was on Train Service for a week, and I always wondered why people risk their lives by putting their little bodies in opposition to a train. Who in hell do they think is going to give first? On a related note, these people were seriously violating the law by trespassing alone.

As one poster said, the rail was there long before anything else. Primarily, blame the planners who thought that a major convention center should be placed between the tracks and the bay, and that then a ball park should be placed immediately on the land side of the tracks. Recently, a single pedestrian bridge has been erected across the tracks and highway. Chicago had this same problem 75 years ago, and they solved it by raising the level of the surface streets and by leaving the rails at the original grade level, they covered over the railways with a major downtown park. BTW, it would be very expensive to try to route the rail line anywhere else; San Diego geography and urban density constrains the options. Since most traffic on this line is done at night (this is the only coastal link to Mexico), I have to wonder why train operations couldn't have been coordinated better with the fully predictable pedestrian traffic. I'm surprised somebody didn't get the bright idea to disconnect a brake hose in retaliation for the inconvenience.
@wb6wsn
@wb6wsn 10 лет назад
***** Hmm, "move the rails one hour away." Are you suggesting a new right-of-way through the mountains (research SD&AE RR) or a long causeway over the deep ocean? I don't spend any of my life at sporting events, fucking or non-fucking, and I don't crawl under/through halted consists, so your "guesses" are not very accurate. The rational thing is to not schedule freights past here during scheduled sporting events. Perhaps you know little of this right-of-way, but for that train to get where is was, it had to block a huge number of crossings coming North through San Ysidro, Chula Vista, National City and San Diego. The head of the train was likely far enough North (when it halted) to block the two main crossings between the downtown area / freeways and the airport. Taken in whole, one consist made a huge impact on daytime traffic patterns in an urban area. This video emphasizes "dumb people doing a dangerous thing," but the real dummies are whoever thought it was a good idea to schedule a freight through there in the middle of the day and coincident to a 60,000-peron sporting event. Perhaps someone finally realized this, as I happen to live near the line, and can hear freight operations only at night for the past few years.
@wb6wsn
@wb6wsn 10 лет назад
***** Well, I can only read what you say, and you said "move the rails one hour away." It must have meant something, unless you just post random fingerstrokes. Whatever it meant, it was worth you cursing to emphasize your point.

@pkranz937
@pkranz937 9 лет назад
***** Not quite. Had the train line been disturbed and the air dumped, the conductor would have to walk back, fix the hoses, walk back, and have the engineer recharge the train line, which could take another 10 minutes with a long train. Providing nobody else pulls any more stupid stunts.
@pkranz937
@pkranz937 9 лет назад
No they aren't. They're straight air, with s handbrake instead of a spring like on a truck. A hand valve in the locomotive applies, holds, and releases the brakes. On a truck, the foot valve works the same as the locomotive brake, and the johnny bar works the same as the automatic on a train. So it's different, but it takes a long time to recharge the air in a train.

I am an engineer at BNSF and we of all people know that by law you are never supposed to touch the rails or rail-cars unless at a crossing( this does not include rail-cars) because it is a federal offence to go on the rails or touch and CLIMB on equipment that could kill you, plus you are risking your life by doing so.

My great grandfather was an engineer for icg here in the memphis area and accidently killed a woman who was crawling under a train as it was beginning to move. As soon as the tension was taken up on the cars they popped forward and she was killed. BNSF Police also sent me a detailed Thank You letter. Lets just say this crossing is now patrolled 24/7. It's the closest crossing to the Padre Stadium by the way.

I Would NEVER risk my life over a game no matter what the cost was. You have many baseball games to attend to but only have ONE life to live. I would of climbed up and between the cars instead of going under, which was dumb and unnecessary since others just went over the train. Worst thing is that you might have to jump off if its starts crawling but you could actually probably just step off its its going that slow. Multi-engine freight trains like that might take half an hour to clear the crossing and that's not considering if it just parks like it did. I wouldn't mind doing what the guy at 1:48 did.

I agree. I suggest BNSF and Local San Diego Major League Baseball Committee talk about this situation here illustrated. It could be a great idea to switch freight trains in the night when AMTRAK and COASTER trains are not running. Or at least ask BNSF no switching during game time. But let us also consider that freight trains could be carrying priority goods or chiemicals in tank cars that could be dangerous to maintain in a stopped train.

The area we cover is a junction where the BNSF meets with the UP and the SKOL all 3 main lines are active main lines covering 4 tracks and a small stub yard.

You need to learn the difference between 5 feet and 50 feet. Why do you find it necessary to exagerate? It was already a good video without exagerating.

Here, in Montreal, a couple of years ago, a young man almost lost his life climbing over the hitches on a freight train. Now, he has the rest of his life to get used to having no legs and only one arm and hand. Just to save a few minutes.

Trains make deliveries. They often pass rail yards, back up into them to drop a section of cars for factories or chemical plants. then drive off.

Going under the train is beyond stupid. Going over it is a better idea, but just waiting for it to pass is an even better idea yet.

Where are the cops when you need them. To enforce the law about trespassing on BNSF Railroad Property. That BNSF crew doesn't know people are going over and under their long mixed freight.

This is why I'm a Red Sox fan. Because the train tracks run parallel to Fenway park. Not right next to it.

I wouldn't risk my life like that over a game where I can just watch the highlights that I missed later.

Folks, Even Though I'm Not A Really Baseball Fan At All & Understand That Going To A Event Like A Sports Game Isn't Really Cheap & Can Be Exciting, However If You're Highly Eager To Attend A Event Where There Are Tracks Or Roads Close By To The Place. Try Arriving At The Place Sooner Than Later As Possible Instead Of Risking Life & Limb Going All Around, Over & Under An Active Motion Vehicle Or Machine Like A Train. Better Yet Watch The Event From Your Place If Not A Restaurant, Bar, Tailgate With A Device Such As A Radio In The Parking Lot, Your Friend's Or Relative's Home. Come On People.

I watched this video in 2012, searched up the Padres on RU-vid, found Everth Cabrera's steal of home, watched it, and became a Padres fan.

I can't believe people's obsession would take precedence over their lives for a game. Good catch on the video and glad you are using it for a purpose.

Thanks to people, some of whom may have gone under that train, trains don't/can't always blow their horns anymore, they do ring their bells, but halfway down the train, you may not hear that. They don't even always blow for crossings anymore, I'm actually surprised they blew for this one.

And the things that's so stupid about all of them is they start taking off running the very moment the BNSF train clears and they don't think that there could be a trolley coming as well.

Tbh, nothing will be done to make it safe for people crossing these tracks unless they learn the hard way by someone going under the train and getting crushed

This is why you don't put a railway through the middle of a city. trams are fine but proper trains arent

They were asking for it, it's common sense and I would rather wait 15 minutes then risk the trains starting and end up getting hit

Climbing over the train is really impatient. But crawling UNDER it!? Come on... How thick can you possibly get. I know, I'll just place myself under a 50 tonne carriage, with metal wheels on metal tracks. Being run over with a relatively light car, with relatively soft air filled rubber tyres can crush you. This will just slice you like a hot knife through butter.

What's the freakin' rush? You sit on the freeway for hours. What're a few minutes for a train? I just feel sorry for the rescue people who have to pick up what left.

These people are so stupid. If that train starts to move you’d be crushed to death. I’d wait till the train moved. Safety around the rails is always first

Obviously that silly baseball game is a hella lot more important to those few individuals than their own lives, to point they literally crawl UNDER the train ! (I would just stand there and WAIT !!!)

the people going underneath were indeed idiots. On the other hand i wouldn't fault the people passing over, as long as they didn't cross the coupling.
@abrr2000
@abrr2000 9 лет назад
so long as you cross the train using the ladders and walkways it's relatively safe on a train like that, as it's not going to go fast. it's going under that's madness.

I guess the railroad has no security at those crossings. In my neck of the woods in New Hampshire they call that trespassing on RR property.
