I caught Amtrak southbound surfliner #566 (hauling some serious ass!!!!) and the BNSF executive special meeting in Sorrento Valley, CA on 11/11/09!!!! F59PHI #454 leads the 566 with cabcar 6907 trailing. Engine on the special is a BNSF ES44DC #7460.

I love these videos, I lived in the States for 31 years, and am now back in the UK. Comparing European HS trains to American is like comparing apples to oranges. Yes, European trains are fast, but they look like toys compared to American ones. American trains are HUGE, they move massive loads over massive distances, and when you have a freight train with four engines pulling around a hundred massive wagons, you've got some serious rush when they go by with their air horns blaring. I miss them.

I never cease to be amazed at how many crossing US railroads have. Over here in the UK we are slowly getting rid of the as they are fundamentally dangerous and slow the system down often.

Retired engineer from railroad, if you noticed, conductor was on the ground to scan inspect the passing train, which is a rule with most railroads.if there had not been management personnel in passenger cars, he would have never got off the engine, and chances are , you'd probably have to wake him up. Fact

Very nice video -- enjoyed that. Amtrak videos are my favorites, although I do love all trains. I don't blame you for mentioning on the video that you'll delete all mention of other countries having better and faster trains than ours. I don't know what it is about RU-vid videos in general, but they seem to bring out every kook in the land that's got some hang-up about the USA. I'll bet they're all living here, too, while they post against us.
@npo64
@npo64 6 лет назад
coashddjj2 I agree and I could careless about European trains. American's like their cars and for many years, the US had little use for fast passenger trains. It's only recently that high speed rail has become a topic in the US and American freight train system is the best in the world.

It's either the engineer or conductor since they can step out of the train where a track goes from double to single. No need to wait inside the train if your train is idle for a bit.

No there is only one type of K5LA horn. The F59PHI K5LA horns sound different because they are mounted behind the exhaust of the engine, whereas on the cabcar or a P42 are not mounted behind the exhaust.

However all locomotives have a bell system, even the old steam engines. It's an additional safety feature, especially when pulling into a station.

@Mutleytech

Actually, the railroads in the U.S. are upgrading the track, re-aligning and putting in concrete ties. There is just so much expanse and distance and it is costly. Much of the track is good for 79mph to 90mph and is shared with freight. The only dedicated high speed is on the NEC for now rated at 125mph to 150mph. We are working on it. Nice vid BTW.
@composerlecturer
@composerlecturer 10 лет назад
In old times the north and east bound trains had right of way. Now it's based on other criteria in many cases. Amtrak's on-time record on the North East Corridor (NEC). which it does own, is most times right to the minute. However, once was 3 hours late coming westbound into Salt Lake City, about a thousand miles from the NEC. The engineer totally stepped on it across the desert all night, and we arrived in Reno so early we had to wait in the yard before they'd let us into the station.

Amtrak being a US Owned Entity running on track rights from other railroads usually has priority over other trains. Ussually when an Amtrak train is on route, nearby trains are either put into passing track lines or given amber CTC Signaling if on Double Lines so the Amtrak unit can pass at it's most efficient speed and keep it on time. Mind you most times I ever see Amtrak, they are running between 5 minutes to half an hour late...

We have BNSF engines pulling oil tanks from North Dakota coming in here to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, and you can always tell the BNSF engines from the local NBSR engines by the horns and how the American crews use their horns, more than they do up here, even at 3 am.

trainkids is correct, CSX like BNSF runs an executive special,CSX's train is made up of two ex amtrak F-40's and 12 cars painted blue home ported in Jacksonville,FL and travel CSX's system.

@UnionPacific6936 13 лет назад
@MrZkr123 Acela trains use hybrid K5LAs they have a different pitch to one of the bells. All p42s and f59s on amtrak have regular K5LAs exept for a few.

It's the opposite in Canada, because VIA Rail doesn't own any trackage, they have to pull onto the siding and wait for the CNR or CPR freights to go by. It makes for a longer train trip.
@ashb001
@ashb001 6 лет назад
The Amtrak looked much faster in the long shot, but was rather tame as it approached the station. Alas, was barely 60 mph I suppose.
@Leviathan609
@Leviathan609 10 лет назад
Actually, the locomotives do have a bell that rings whenever a horn is sounded. It's automatic, and you manually have to shut it off. As far as I'm aware, the US and Canada are the only countries in the world that still require their modern locomotives to have a bell, and ring it when the locomotive is approaching a crossing, station, or workers on the track.
