On the dad line, Bo has mande similar jokes in the past. I remember that Bo did a Reddit AMA where somebody asked him about his relationship with his dad. He said that both of his parents were very supportive and that the jokes were just jokes.

@@ISavant i think the 'emotionally distant but present' dad is just such a trope, that even if it's not true, it's an easy shorthand to build emotional rapport with the audience

Many comedians write family into their jokes, it just makes certain jokes work better. Great example of is Anthony Jeselnik, writes some HORRIBLE shit about his family, and he's said they love it lol. They encourage him to put them in his jokes. End of the day a lot of comedy is made up for the sake of the joke.

I think the character of Bo would less relatable and possibly less funny if he had the exact same background as Robert Burnham the actual guy. His being super real while also very much kidding is such a large part of his appeal. He's not a white woman with an Instagram but that song is totally about his trauma with performing.

@Imnotacop the reasoning behind the real reason: early film cameras had less sensitive lenses and it's more difficult and expensive to film at night, so all nighttime scenes were shot in daylight, with a blue filter used in post-processing to signify moonlight. so despite digital cameras and cheaper and more discreet lighting, some contemporary movies still code nighttime as blue, and most audiences intrinsically understand that blue means night

This is so great. I think you nailed it. As others have said, he actually has a good relationship with his father, but I think Bo does SUCH a good job (in all his work, but particularly Inside) of portraying experiences that are way more universal, but doing it in a way that you can't tell if he's simply saying something about himself. I think a large portion of the time, he's not.

This was the first song to make me cry in the special. It's funny but it's also such a common, exhausting occurrence to try so hard to reach out to your mom when you need someone and just wind up arguing with her and ending in an even worse place than you started
@monodescarado
@monodescarado 3 года назад
I love that you’re focussing a lot on the production side of things, and not just the song and meaning. A lot of this special would have been so painstaking to make by one person, especially as Bo seems to be a bit of a perfectionist.
@AndyGattis
@AndyGattis 3 года назад
I think he's getting at one simple idea: during the pandemic, facetiming with mom is the closest alternative to "big night out" level social plans. And thats frustrating, because its so underwhelming.
@ssmidget4
@ssmidget4 3 года назад
I think it's really cool you're doing the special in order. Just make sure that in your own time, you do watch the in-between. Bo set up the special in a way to show isolation. Also Be careful of people trying to send you down a Bo rabbit hole. Many people are going to say "watch Kanye Rant before ________" or "you need to watch ___________ before _____________!" Just enjoy the special. Good luck on your channel.
@ChrisReactsToThings

I've started watching the bits in between each song after I react to the song. It definitely helps tie everything together.
@HarleysCompass
@HarleysCompass 3 года назад
@@ChrisReactsToThings I agree that watching it in order, plus the tidbits in-between are not necessarily important, but I feel like certain songs have more of an impact after watching the tidbits! Like some comments he makes in-between two of the songs really highlights his views on the internet and then tie in later when he sings "Welcome to the Internet." And a later song is, personally, way more hard hitting knowing all the in-between stuff you get from the special. And definitely watch his other stuff in whatever order you want. Personally, having been watching Bo for a long time having the context of his previous shows does kind of add to Inside, but at the same time, I feel you can totally watch his stuff out of order and get the same understanding after the fact instead of coming in already knowing. Or don't watch any of his other stuff if you don't want, it's all up to you and that's totally chill too XD But yea, he does have some other good stuff that you might enjoy seeing as your enjoying this. : )

A note on the lighting - it’s completely dark/blue (depression, sadness etc) and even though talking to his parents is a drag, it’s literally the only thing that’s bringing him “light”. His world/room is darkness, and the few minutes he gets to speak with his parents, it lights up his life. Just something to consider.

Some of the songs from this special are so catchy, sometimes I just randomly sing "my mother's covering her camera with her thumb" to myself in the shower 😂
@beekind14
@beekind14 3 года назад
Maybe it's a stretch but, after the thumb bit starts, you have three Bo's. I feel like the middle is what he shows his mom, and the sides are "off camera" and those are the frustrated bits, that his mom doesn't necessarily see. He keeps those "outside" of the camera view.

Like you I dunno how deep this song actually goes, but what I got from it was something I can definitely relate to; that video calling with your parents is awkward and isn't really much fun, nor does it really fill that need of wanting to see your family and missing them, but unfortunately if you live a long way away from your family (and of course, if you were in lockdown away from them during this pandemic), it's all you have. And so you do it, and often get frustrated at them, have arguments with them, and talk about inane shit and don't really enjoy any of it, but that's your only connection to them right now so that's what you gotta do. I've personally had way more arguments with my mum and dad over the phone/video calls than I ever have in real life (as an adult).

Insightful reactions to Inside so far. But I will say that if you are only reacting to the songs and not to the content in between, you are missing out on some of the important context, especially later in the special. Perhaps there’s a way you could do the set-up to a song and the some itself.

I am really enjoying your reactions to Bo's songs from Inside, you dissect the songs just the right amount. I know you said you are planning to finish the special but i think you absolutely need to check out some of his older work. Such as Art is Dead or Repeat Stuff. Keep up the good work, i hope you can find the time to keep going.
@JuiceboxTheShuckle
@JuiceboxTheShuckle 3 года назад
At the beginning of the song "this 40 minutes are essential, Imma facetime with my mom tonight" it's because, even though not everyone enjoys sepnding time with their family, specially through calls or videocalls, the fact that everyone was quarantined made closeness and knowing about family somewhat of a necesity, we might not want to do it, but wen there are so few instances for actual human interaction, even more if it's someone we care about, those calls become an important part of your day, not only for yourself, but for the people in your life you love. So facetiming with his mom is a "sacrifice" he's willing to make to feel more at ease in a situation like this.
@JuiceboxTheShuckle
@JuiceboxTheShuckle 3 года назад
To be honest, I'm not sure if he ACTUALLY has a bad relationship with his dad, but he has been making references to it throughout his whole career. So there's probably something, but you know, with Bo you can never really know, he's always made it clear that everything is an act.

Great reaction and analysis! I find Bo super cute too and I don't mind the long hair but I'm not sure the beard works for him. 🤔 I'm so used to his boyish clean-shaven look from his previous specials (in the song Ironic he even jokes about being unable to grow a beard…) that I particularly like the shot with the big lollipop in White Woman's Instagram because the lollipop almost completely covers his beard.😁 In that video he looks absolutely adorable in that shot and in the one where he sillily sticks his tongue out trying (and perfectly succeeding) to be cute. 😄

Hey nice reaction, love how you're very attentive with the lyrics and the video, very good observations about everything... maybe is a bit nitpicking but the focus of your camera is giving a big blur around you and the microphone keep getting in and out of focus and it kinda distracts me...i know its just a detail, but I thought I may say how I felt about it. I think the part about his dad is general toxic masculinity that all of us experience, in that guys don’t talk about their emotions, especially the older generation.
@ianmay9372
@ianmay9372 3 года назад
I wouldn't interpret it as being that way. As someone whose family is thousands of miles away, I often find myself super frustrated with the sheer irrelevance of the conversations that are held. I wouldn't be so quick to put that in the label of toxic masculinity, especially if you want to be taken seriously.
@juanpablomunoz8720
@juanpablomunoz8720 3 года назад
@@ianmay9372 Nah, I think talking about toxic masculinity is appropriate here. The line about the dad is about how they never had a deep conversation which makes sense with older men not being good at expressing themselves due to having to suppress their emotions.

Two things can be true at once... men can have some unfair pressure to pretend to be more stoic than they actually are and also men are not generally as emotional as women. And that's okay.. we are different and our differences are good.

I like that you bring up the light from the phone screen. Bo talked a lot about that when he wrote/directed 8th Grade comparing light from the phone screen to writing by candlelight in the days before technology and how it’s important for him to capture that lighting element in modern film contexts. He definitely likes to incorporate it into his work.

From my point of view, the entire song sounds like the kind of song you’d hear at a nightclub, like on a date with someone. Also, how he was in the dark while FaceTiming. Both of those could point to him implying he doesn’t have any significant close relationships other than his parents.

My interpretation of this video is that, even though we love our parents, we want to do what makes us happy, like time with the boys/girls etc, so it feels like a waste of time talking to them. They love and worry about us especially if you don’t live with them anymore, so we get lectured, they tell you to get your shit together, etc… and they mean well, we just don’t want to hear about it. We will miss this when they’re gone. Appreciate everything while you still can.
