I think the screen shrinks to fit the aspect ratio of a phone/FaceTime, similar to what he did on White Woman’s Instagram. But I like your interpretation. Good video, this song was always my least favorite just because I didn’t relate at all, so I enjoy hearing from people who do relate to it. He has said he is close to both his parents, his dad used to be the merch guy at his shows. He’s so good at making things broadly relatable.

Its so interesting to me that some people take the "and that's the deepest talk we've ever had" line as a more lighthearted joke about how dad's are, and then other people find it really sad.

@@magnisgd possibly not at the very beginning(when he started on youtube), but you can tell he plays into the role that Bo created after he won all his emmy's this year and his dad posted "whats the big deal?" with Bo's 3 emmy awards.

from what i know they have great relationship. his dad recently tweeted how proud he is of bo for winning the emmys, many of this stuff isnt really about him, he just knows reaaly well how to be rel for millenials i guess :D

Hey you should do Look who's inside again and then Goodbye, they're connected and you have to listen to the former first for goodbye to make sense. Look who's inside again is lighthearted but sad lyrics explaining his childhood. Goodbye is super emotional and haunting, I think you'd like both!

Comedy, look whose inside again, Welcome To The Internet, all interconnect to Goodbye. So before watching goodbye, please please please go back and rewatch the other ones so you can appreciate Goodbye much more

This song always felt to me like... we get angry so easily when we are frustrated, and our family is usually the one who you are mean to. They can do the smallest things (like covering the camera) and we burst in rage. But once we realize what we are doing, we are sorry, 'cause we know they did nothing wrong. We are barking at the wrong tree. He is so lost and and frustated and that's why he is angry and at the egde of crying at the last scenes. And it's also why he is mouthing "sorry" at the end

He says it's a waste of time to face time Mom, but he's still doing it. I think it's representative of that it can seem like a waste of time, at times, because we love them and they're family, even tho they can irritate us or talk about shit we're not interested in at times

I love your interpretation, that he is not wasting his time because he is facetiming with his mum, but he is wasting the time he has for facetiming with his mum, because they are taking about stupid things. I hadn't thought of it like that yet. Thanks.

I always saw the part where hes yelling at his phone as his internal feelings. So hes frustrated and also having a lot of sad feelings he wishes he could be talking to her about, but he doesnt actually let it show and it widens back out to his quiet exhaustion as he says goodbye.

For me the line about his dad is just the way it goes most of the time. Some people have deep personal conversations with both parents and that is great. It seems like most though are always more comfortable discussing that kind of stuff with one or the other though and typically it's the mother.

I'm not sure if anyone else has said this and I know I'm late but I always find it very interesting that he's sitting in the middle of the room in the dark, the only light coming from the phone, from his mum. And how at the end, when it finishes, he's left in complete darkness again. Possibly symbolising that even though he might get frustrated and bored during the conversation, he still needs that time to stop the darkness from swallowing him up. He even says "These 40 minutes are essential". That's just what I thought. Love your videos!

Just my thoughts… The tight vertical view and lighting symbolize the way his mom is seeing him through her phone. The theme of this special isn’t really covid, it’s about how we put so much space between ourselves and reality relying on the internet and devices. He is theatrically demonstrating the need to connect with his loved one, but wasting so much effort explaining how to use the technology that the conversation never really amounts to any where near the connection he would have if they could just hang out doing real stuff. The frustration at the end emphasizes how it’s frustrating to have these types of phone interactions when you were really hoping for something more real.

This is one of the only pieces of the special that I managed to appreciate for its comedy only. Seriously Bo does such an amazing job adressing crucial issues whilst dressing it up with comedy. Hands down, one of the best comedians out there. I love your reactions Sir! New sub here!

When I was in the hospital, not being able to have anyone come see me was such a punch in the gut. The level of isolation being stuck in a hospital is already bad enough, taking away the one thing that would bring any sort of joy and comfort because of COVID really stings. Also, my interpretation when he says he's wasting time FaceTiming with his mom is that he's hoping that talking to his mom and seeing her face would bring him joy (enough to reduce his anxiety/depression at least) only to realize that it's not the same, and the circumstances behind having to use FaceTime instead of just going to visit in person makes it feel like a waste of time, because it doesn't actually make him feel better.
