Everyone has been talking about Bo Burnham's new special called INSIDE on Netflix, so I figured I would do a reaction/analysis video on Welcome to the Internet and share my thoughts with you all.

the song is so sinister because he’s literally talking as the internet. he’s zooming in as the song gets more intense and more personal. the way he uses the camera to input certain emotions into the audience is so cool. the song gets very overwhelming, just like the internet. bo is a musical genius, not to mention he has an unbelievable understanding of how to warp your emotions with his camera motions, the beat, and the tone of his voice. inside is literally the only genuinely perfect film i’ve ever seen.

He's not talking as the internet per se, he's talking as the corporations that control it. Google, Facebook, etc. I'm sure I don't need to list them, they're kinda hard to miss lol.

Ah yes. The internet personified, the villain that had won right from the beginning, and knew it too. I wasn't the one that said this, I honestly don't know who did first, but I think its perfect: "Its an abusive relationship, an addiction, your only friend, seemingly inescapable, and all in the palm of your hand." the line where he drops ''you should kill your mom'' you can see the red light of his other camera reflected in his glasses, it's also the only moment that happens, and bo plans EVERYTHING. it makes that moment an even more ''sinister'' part, and the song definitely really gets villainous shortly after. dude is an incredible artist for sure.

I was about to write the same thing. There is so much nuance and depth in this song that I don't think hardly anyone would know every reference and fully get all of the meaning the first time through. I've yet to see anyone connect the harry potter line to Rule 34 yet, but that's probably what he meant. But getting that the whole last half of the song was directed toward the current teenage generation and was basically monologuing as the internet about how its evil plan for that generation is working so well is just amazing. It took me a few play throughs to get that.

I always interpreted the “your insides out” line as now that you have the internet to socialize with the rest of the world, there’s no need to get off of it and go outside. When you stay inside and go on social media, you ARE going out. I felt like that went in with the theme of the rest of the special given we’ve all been stuck inside for a year but I totally see the other interpretations too.

10:10 I am a waitress so when I see a family with a kid on their iPad I’ll usually talk with the kid about whatever it is they are doing or watching. Like the other day there was a girl who was like 8 and she was watching the Owl House while her grandparents babysat her or something. so I talked with her about how I watch it with my younger sisters, and who her favorite characters are, and why it was her favorite cartoon. I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with kids using electronics; provided it’s in sparing amounts, and what content they view is controlled a bit. But I think (at least from what I remember of being that young) kids just want to talk with adults about the things they care about, and unfortunately I don’t think the adults in these kid’s lives really take the effort to learn about what their interests are.

It's crazy being Bo's age too. It's not just Gen Z, the millenials saw this all happen and understood it better than their parents. My parents are all hooked on facebook and group chats, oblivious to the problem. We saw the problem as it grew, and we don't know how to fix it 😥 Stuck between the old and the new. Pre and post social media age. Where the fuck are we heading? 😬

Out of all the reactions and thoughts I have seen from watching other Bo Burnham reviewers, you've been spot on with so many so far. I have ONE really cool thing to add to this for people that want to know how thought out Bo was in this song. Look at the lighting in this song. 2:35 The stars at first represent that never-ending content the internet has to offer. 9:10 -No lights because the internet was nowhere near what it is today. The blue/pink/purple/green lights at 12:55 represent a young kid before being introduced to the iPad or just internet in general. **EVIL LAUGH** 16:55 - The internet has won .. The kid is now a part of the internet world... Both the first lights of the internet and the kid's lights are now intertwined .... Dude is a freaking genius. Also, Inside is nominated for 6 Emmys! So hope he wins multiple.

He has kind of the vibes of a deal-maker. The way the middle part pulls you in, calming and inviting, promising support and greatness - if we stick together, who knows what we'll do? - and once you agree, it pulls you in and you start to spiral. It does indeed give you what it promised, but it also gives you everything you didn't ask for. It overwhelms you, and drowns out everything else. It lures you in with promises of knowledge, entertainment and escape, but traps you, while slowly building your addiction and dependence. Once you encounter the dark side, it's already far too late. That being said, the internet is truly a wonderful place, if you know your limits, and learn to navigate it.

Great camera and Mike. That is everything in reaction videos. Bo’s career is a wonderful journey. He has multiple specials on Netflix, 2 major movies, directed some comedy specials and had a hilariously, MTV series “Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous” which was way ahead of its time. Reacting to any of it will be a god time. Also, because you have so few subs (hopefully not for long)I know that you might actually read this comment….YAY. Trust me, Chris. Ypu are good. Love the analysis, just wanted to point out something that people might not know. Arround 7:20 you talk about how you notice a bunch of things on the internet after talking to someone else about it. While it is true that marketing cookies keep track of topics that you look into to advertise to you there is also a phenomenom called "Frequency Illusion". Also known as the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, it's the tendancy to notice something more after noticing it for the first time. So yes, we live in a cyberpunk dystopia where all our information is used to try to aggressively monitize every aspect of our psyche, but we also do notice things more when it's something new that we just learned about. The more you know!

this song and video always make me think of the escalating nature of rabbit holes that you can go down on the internet,, you start with a blank slate - a wide range of generally harmless content and as you build this history of viewing, the internet begins to provide you with more and more disturbing content to the point that your so numb from it you don’t even blink twice at bomb building tutorials even when they’re presented next to an ad for buzz feed quizzes.

Love the reaction! I love the line “Apathy’s a tragedy and boredom is a crime” because it does feel like boredom is a crime now, now that the internet has infinity content. Like if you’re not absorbing it, then you’re doing nothing and that’s not allowed (by society). So nobody just sits and enjoys a book or something more simple, because we get such a huge dopamine rush from all this information thrown at us. But yeah Bo Burnham does have a few songs that you can react to. The best are probably “From Gods Perspective”, “We think we know you”, “can’t handle this”, “all eyes on me” (though I recommend watching this one after the others). One observation I had touches base on the carnival barker/ringmaster theme you mentioned. Seems like that similarity in sound might have been intentional as circuses and carnivals are ubiquitous or known to offer very entertaining shows that up front seem innocent, but when you look deeper into them discover some messed up stuff. That imo parallels the internet.

more importantly than the internet or corporation viewing us is that "apathy's a tragedy and boredom is a crime" is legitimately how many of us view ourselves. the internet, marketing, and our overly individualistic and capitalistic culture has severly skewed our perceptions of what it means to be a connected and even 'relevant' person. our sense of self begins to become much more rigid and objectified as we consistently compare ourselves to others through social media and feel we need to take part in the buying and selling of our personalities and even our personal lives for recognition and relevance it's really, really scary to be honest

I know this video is two years old. It’s the first time I’m seeing a video of yours and enjoying a reaction you’ve done and I love it so far. Genuinely everything you’ve said has been on point. And I love when you talk about after 2010 just everyone on their phones recording you all the time. In 2014 I entered my freshman year of highschool. The peak of vine and social media. And for my school talent show I danced with my friends on stage for fun. And I wound up falling off due to poor planing. Everyone in that room. The entire highschool grade from 9 to 12 saw me fall from a very big height while doing a cartwheel. And like you said. Everyone recording you. Watching and judging you. Those videos fucking haunt me still to this day. I’m 22, I’ve been out of school since 2019. It’s been more than a “few years” since this incident and there are still videos of it. I’m haunted and I never asked for it. Kids, states away from my school. Knew who I was when our school visited for a competition. It’s exactly as you said. It is terrifying. Especially when this pseudo fame lands on you that you never asked for. ❤❤

You've got it, I just turned 40 and remember the days before social media, and the idea that no generation after will be able to forget about every little mistake, terrifies me about the psychology of humanity...especially as a network specialist, I know how big tech basically controls everything...They sell gambling to children in their sports video games FFS... ...and that's a similar story to me when I tried to dance in a school show to Centerfield by John Fogerty (It was a whole choreographed baseball thing) and botched it...it was my first act so I actually ran off stage...thankfully if my parents caught it on camcorder, they got rid of it...and this was oddly circa '99, IIRC...

in my opinion the last part where he starts singing "could i intrest you in everything..." shows the kids who have access to the internet can still experience those things from the beginning

My interpretation to this song is about how now that there isn't an overall editor to mass media, literally anyone and anything can submit their content. And when that many people have access to share what they like, you do end up with anything and everything... all of the time. There's good, there's bad, and there's certainly a lot of ugly.

Where he sings: "your inside's out" I think he means that our gateway to the outside world is now inside through the internet

I always think of a shady carnival barker trying to lure you into the freak show. Also strong Dr. Terminus vibes.

“Your inside’s out” I saw that more in the marketing meaning. It’s the basic way to sell something to someone: knowing everything it thinks and likes. That’s how profiling works.

When you were talking about seeing stuff than seeing it later, that happens to me every day. One time I was talking about Freddie Mercury with my cousin, and the rest of the week my RU-vid recommended was full of him. I wonder how that happened… But yeah I also have like 1000009 diffrent example as well

As one of "them", lol, the world really is so connected and it's great sometimes but like Bo said in another of his songs I have so many disorders and shit that I know is directly linked to how I've been on the internet and everything I've been exposed to

One thing I didn't pick up on until you mentioned it was how inviting that moment was. And for it to be immediately offset by the malicious intent of the corporations is to signify how the older generation made it seem like such a nice place then once we were in they don't care about us but about our revenue. I always thought that interlude was just to say how different it is but my perspective changed just from you saying that one line of how it's all so nice and inviting.

"It's starts of really light and innocent", which can be attributed to surfing the web too. You start off with that but the longer you are around and the deeper you go, the more dark shit you learn.

WOW, I really enjoy your reaction to this, You seem very in tune with things on a much deeper level and it's interesting to witness, i'm not entirely sure why I am so interested in some guys reaction, but I guess part of it is kind of a validation of my own thoughts. Burnham is such as genius in his craft and you are so right, his talent although it may not change the world, it offers a lot of perspective and honesty to the forefront actually, People generally do not like truth or honesty unless it comes in the form of comedy and Bo does a masterful job at telling the story of the obvious. I think your right, Bo is the INERNET personified, he playing the devil that's basically tricking people into using the internet making them feel all warm and cozy about it and then BAM, he's showing you the sinister side that's he "The Internet" really wants you to take part in. IDK, very talented. Anyway, thanks for sharing your reaction with us, it's very interesting IMHO. good job, keep up the good work. you seem like a well rounded guy.
