wasn't the whole left brain right brain thing debunked like 20 years ago its not at all that simple and is frankly just misleading
@neurogalmd

Thanks for your comment! You're right that hemispheric lateralization is a nuanced topic that is still being researched and debated. However, it hasn't been debunked. In fact, the evidence of lateralization is seen in cases of hemispheric strokes, where focal deficits are observed. For example, when someone has a stroke in the left hemisphere, they can lose their language capacity, and someone with a massive stroke in the right hemisphere can experience left sided weakness as well as a lack of insight into their condition (anosagnosia). So, lateralization does exist. The issue arises when people oversimplify it by labeling themselves as strictly left-brained or right-brained. The key to well-functioning individuals lies in the integration and communication between both hemispheres, rather than being exclusively dominant in one.

I'm just a guy (no training) but her description plus his are too accurate for me. My linguist and logical processing are high level genius in tests but my spacial intelligence is barely a functioning person. Also, I'm emotionally dead and can only process things as logic but, as a child I was the MOST loving and outgoing

@@neurogalmd People with ACC or that have had their corpus callosum "removed" are extremely interesting for all these reasons. We had a whole unit about it in school and i don't think any class had interested me that much before.

no it wasn't debunked, the left and right brain do have clearly different roles and psychologists/neurologists agree of course it's not as simple as "this is the emotional side" but a lot of the roles do follow that general format. like language (left)/emotion (right), logic + reasoning (left)/ creativity + imagination (right), analytical thinking (left)/ intuition (right) a huge amount of the process in our brain do seem to be separated by left/right and there does seem to be one more intellectual side, and one more creative side

to avoid laterization concept maybe we need to take out the divider which is corpus callosum and everybody will become 'the rain man'..😊

The Kanye Rant is a pure study in seeing a mix of "look at how Kanye has mental breakdowns on stage" that blends in to... "come and observe my mental breakdown on stage". A funny song that bleeds into a song of self-pain and needing... all under the guise of a Kanye rant... it's genius and terrifying, a must watch for you.

Worst part is that Bo Burnham had an actual breakdown after performing Rant and stopped performing until the pandemic Netflix special.

That was a really fun and engaging reaction! You should absolutely react to more Bo! His back catalog is a gosh darn goldmine with so, so many incredible songs in it. Some recommendations: -Can’t Handle This (Kanye Rant) -All Eyes on Me -Art is Dead -From Gods Perspective -Welcome to the Internet -Straight White Male This song is a pretty solid indicator of his performative style and artist expression. He’s very clever and annoyingly talented lol. My therapist has actually used this video during sessions to help demystify internal dialogue with clients who get stuck lol. Loved the reaction, liked and subscribed for more Bo! Cheers

Awesome reaction! It was very nice to see an actual neurologist react and explain a lot of this song. Bo is great, and I think you'd enjoy a lot of his other music. If I may give a couple suggestions, "Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant)" or "Art Is Dead." are both very good.

Whether it is because of left brain right brain or just trauma in my life, this song makes me cry even though im otherwise emotionally dead inside. It expresses something that goes on within me better than I've ever been able to. My logical side completely crushed my emotional side. I went from being this super outgoing empathetic person to never having feelings

In one of his specials, Bo describes how he worried that his art style might be too "meta" - a performance about his struggles with performing... but it really works (obviously!) I think you'd enjoy Can't Handle This/Kanye Rant followed by All Eyes On Me, they are vaguely related in a timeline sense. Standalones: anything from What, Happy and Inside :)

As a significantly left bodied person, left leg, eye and handed, I wonder if I'm using those right brain functions to interface with reality, or if my hemispheres are inverted.
@neurogalmd
@neurogalmd Год назад
Good question! Most people, even left-handed individuals, have a similar setup when it comes to how their brain hemispheres handle different functions (most of the research done around this topic is on language dominance...so most people (including left handed people) are left language dominant, which means that their language centers dominate in the left hemisphere). However, there are some left handed people who do experience inverted hemispheric dominance. Thanks for this insightful question!

I think the reason why Bo has a problem with how his brain treats him is that both hemispheres of the brain are convinced that they're the better one and the other must be wrong, because all they understand is what they individually do, so they don't have enough information to ever figure out why the other one would ever believe that the advice it's giving is better. Bo can't figure out what to do because if he listens to one over the other, whichever one he chooses to follow never ends up having enough information to know for sure that what it's suggesting is the right idea, because both sides have their own separate element required in tandem to make the proper decision. Left brain needs to be making logical decisions about what behaviors are or aren't safe and effective to engage in, but it needs the right brain to get Bo to first care about anything enough for the left brain to bother investigating it and to give Bo enough of a reward or punishment feeling to qualify the difference between a positive or negative decision, because if he didn't feel anything from the right, any outcome the left suggested would just feel neutral. And the more that he chooses to listen to one over the other, the more that causes him to make decisions that don't actually satisfy him. The side he isn't listening to will take the unhappiness of that as evidence that the other side must be wrong, and it will try even harder to get him to listen to itself instead because it is all the more convinced that they must have a solution the other side can't figure out. That makes sense, so he'll start leaning towards switching to the other side, and that will give the side he picked originally a reasonable avenue to ascribe any unhappiness to the side he's beginning to listen to more. The original side will then become more determined to make Bo continue listening to it over the other. That leads to a feedback loop of each side trying more and more to convince him that they must be the better one, and that feedback loop gets more distressing and chaotic the farther it goes on, leading to worse and worse decisions that keep making each side more and more determined to prove themselves. They never realize that the unhappiness doesn't come from Bo picking the wrong side, rather it comes from the fact that both sides are always trying to convince Bo that he should listen to a particular one over the other. Instead, Bo needs to thoroughly consider fully both arguments that either side is making before acting on anything so that he can find a compromise between the two of them that is properly balanced, fully informed, and includes enough information from both to prove to each individually that the only thing that works is when he makes both of them satisfied that they have been heard and were allowed to input enough of their beliefs into the final opinion without letting the other side drag him down. Bo will only be happy when he gets both hemispheres to finally realize why they were created to be only one individual half of a singular brain that unifies them, i.e. when he convinces the right brain that it loves the left for being a necessary help and wants to be reciprocately helpful to the left brain in kind, while also convincing the left that it logically knows that the right must love it and therefore would only ever be trying to give input that the left can use to look out for the both of them. At that point each side has realized that following its ego has been leading it astray, and they both collapse from respective individuality into something that understands that they both work to find a single answer that satisfies both, and must have actually just been the unitary harmonic system that produces that satisfying answer the entire time. Everything is politics.

Loved your reaction! I have a couple of all over the place recommends! More Bo Burnham - Kanye Rant & All Eyes On Me (Themes of panic attacks and depression), That Funny Feeling(Interested in your take on what I mentally refer to as millennial dread ) Twenty One Pilots - lots of their music deals directly with mental health. Some of my favs are Migraine(Anxiety) and Holding Onto You (Depression) Hozier - Not specifically because his songs speak on brain issues, but he's my all time favorite musician and he puts so much care into his lyrics and the composition of his songs. Swan Upon Leda is beautiful and speaks to generations of female oppression, which is reason enough to listen, but the soundbath of the instruments and vocal layering is enrapturing. I'd be fascinated to hear you talk more about the neurological responses we have to music, like why do some people get chills/goosebumps from music and others don't? I get them on my arms and cheeks from a lot of emotional music.

I actually had a moderate right mca acute stroke and I definitely struggle with the know it all issues and being overly logical which comes off as being a jerk and rude. But most of these issues only exist on social media and not in person interactions but it still severely bothers me I don't want to just give up and quit any form of social media. I want to get better. I lost some movement on my left side.

Thank you for sharing your experience with such honesty! I admire your self-awareness and willingness to acknowledge the areas where you struggle. Taking that first step is brave and because of that I believe you're on the right path. One thing you can try is engaging in activities that foster openness. Start small, like exploring a new museum or striking up a conversation at a coffee shop. These novel experiences can challenge your brain and push you out of your comfort zone, helping to expand the 'openness' parts of your mind. Don't give up; you have the insight and motivation to get better. Progress is a journey and even one step forward is a big step in the right direction :)

I got a neurology question 🥰 I get migraines on the left side of my head the majority of the time, and the particularly bad ones make speaking foreign languages really difficult. I live in a country where my native language isn’t used by 99.5% of people, so most of my life happens in a foreign language. I only speak my native language (Faroese) with my family, and that works fine during migraines. It’s only English and Danish, my non-native languages, that I have a really hard time speaking during bad migraines. Is that because my migraines are mostly left-sided, or is it just a general migraine thing? I’m right-handed, by the way. I’m not really worried, just curious, since I’m fine afterwards, and my neurologist said some people can have speech difficulties during episodes.

So...do Americans just get used to having words censored without getting irrationally(again, I'm aware it's irrational) angry every time they hear a beep or a blank? As a Belgian we have some of Eminem's earlier work uncensored on the radio without issues so... Like, I couldn't get through this video at all.

As a citizen of the US, it depends a bit. Yes, we are generally used to the bleeps, however they are only really used to try and keep the source “family friendly”. Although, and it may just be personal, there’s definitely a joy that can be taken when there is no censorship.

Remember to buy a helmet, mouth guard, and calf guards if that is even a thing. Mouth guard because it gets bumpy so you need to protect the teeth and they prevent biting the tongue. The backwards facing shin guards because the danger of wheel gouging. For example, when I first started, it is easy to balance if you are standing fully erect. This is because the center of gravity is higher, learning to euc involved left and right equilibrium. Here’s the thing about the calf guards. I fell off because I forgot to come to a complete stop before dismounting or I was attempting to ride up a dirt trail over a tree root. Whatever, the euc keeps going forward, so when it tips over the wheel speeds up and my leg was right there being gouged in the calves (both legs) by chainsaw wheel from hell, twice! And once when I picked it up before turning it off, lugging it onto a porch. Although, it really is fun once you get going and I can show you mine. Connect with me if you want a riding partner.
