I'm agnostic, but I come from a christian family. I feel like this song is directed towards people like some of my relatives - who go to church and read the bible, but aren't especially kind people. They'll recite bible verses from memory, but ask them to spare some empathy for others and they tap out.
@Zarryon12
@Zarryon12 3 года назад
i'm the type of person they'd recite the bible to and i'd recite another verse that contradicts theirs. Then say it's people like them and the verses within their preconceived notion of what the bible is to them, that i lost faith in their God. Granted they only play a part in the millions of things that actually did. Buut if god has no faith in me , i'm fine with that as well, deserved even i say. I tend to place my faith in death. Death is the end and that's all...or i hope that's all. An eternity with all the world and those that come after is honestly my own personal hell, mostly i can't deal with other people for more than a few hours let alone an eternity.

A long, long time ago I heard someone say: "Standing in a church makes you no more a Christian, than standing in a garage makes you a car." Now, this doesn't mean that going to church is a complete waste of time. What it is saying is that you can go thru the motions of being a devout follower, but you cannot hide what is truly in your heart from God. Bo is pretty much confirming that you can't bullshit your way in either. 😂

@@Zarryon12 This is basically my pov as well, but I go a bit further even: Eternity with the god of the bi(b)le sounds like Hell to me. And I don't think he'd like eternity together with me, either. Some Christians have told me that, when we're let into Heaven, we become our best versions of ourselves that we can be, with all of our flaws removed. To that I've answered that what's regarded as "flaws" is _highly_ subjective: I'm a very argumentative contrarian, and I even feel that my contrarianism is one of my best personality traits. If I was let into Heaven, I'd never shut up about how absolutely fucked up the existence of Hell is and how badly someone who not only creates Hell but even puts beings into it needs to be overthrown and, if not outright destroyed, then at least thrown down into Hell himself... Yes, the god of the bi(b)le deserves Hell as far as I'm concerned. In fact, he deserves it more than literally any human that's ever existed. So yeah, no, having to spend eternity in Heaven in that monster's company would most definitely be Hell to me.

“Maybe God does not believe in you” has always, to me, meant that God doesn’t have confidence in us. For instance, imagine your spouse goes to race in a big marathon. You say “I believe in you!” That translates to “I have confidence in your ability. I believe that you can do it.” From this, I think Bo is trying to say that God no longer has confidence in us getting into heaven because of the awful things we do as people

Yes, specifically it's often the people who are the most vocal about spreading the word of their god who deviate furthest from the course they tell other people to follow. Jesus would be appalled to see our modern civilization, where our technology exceeds any of the wildest expectations someone who lived only a few decades ago could imagine. And yet, human suffering still happens on an unimaginable scale.

I live under the belief all people are selfish and act according to their selfish wants. I endulge in my selfish wants, but they often correlate with helping others and doing favors, because what I enjoy most is often solving another persons problem. I don't believe a god can exist, but if they do then surely they don't care if I believe in them. The only god who would condemn someone for not believing in it would be an ultra narcissistic god.

"Maybe life on earth could be heaven, doesn't just the thought of it make it worth a try." - That line always resonated with me. The irony of spending our entire time on earth focused on getting to the next 'better" life, when this one could be heaven as well if we merely open our minds and our hearts and try.
@vizardonator8571
@vizardonator8571 Год назад
As an atheist, I love this line. There’s so much suffering and pain, but if everyone realized that there was no afterlife, that your body rots and your soul, your consciousness is obliterated when you die, that no one is right, and there’s no being you should idolize metaphorically or literally, regardless of authority, then so much could be fixed. You can’t do everything, that’s why there are other people. Doing something different doesn’t make you better, and decisions should only be made by those with experience, not those with power. The knowledge that evil people won’t be punished for their bad acts, and there’s no paradise beyond our feeble earth should encourage empowerment, activism, preservation, and a more philosophically sound discourse. Science and Philosophy is necessary, but completely separate. We like being in a group, it makes us comfortable. No more. We should be able to share thoughts as a group (including peaceful protests), but unless manpower is absolutely necessary, actions themselves should be individual and with you full accountability. People should also not be shunned because they asked for help, but should likewise not be defended just because their life is hard or their people had horrible things done to them. Judgement should only consist of action and motive, not based on looks. This is part of the reason I find celebrity crushes, idolizing famous people in other ways than just their accomplishments, and electing leaders based on looks or an interesting perspective pretty stupid. These can be factors of great people, but they can also mask incredible stupidity, cunning, and/or evil. The devil is in the details, after all.

As someone who grew up in church, so many people only gain their sense of right or wrong from what their pastor tells them or what they think the bible says (which it often doesn't or has been changed to say). The "you shouldn't abstain..." lines really hit hard. Even if you believe in Christianity you have to think for yourself and find the humanity and love in everyone. Being good is not reserved for people of one faith, goodness and the ability to be good lies in everyone, even if they haven't read the bible

The very first line of actual singing is, "The books you think I wrote are way too thick." This implies that god didn't write any holy book, so none of them are correct. The other spot of note is the love has gotta come from you bit. You interpreted the meaning as love others first, but I saw it as you have to learn to love yourself. The previous bit about wanting god's love is saying that the person being spoken to wants to be loved. As someone who suffers from depression and anxiety, self love is the hardest to come by. Just my two cents.

Personally, the reason I personally took it to mean loving others is because of the amount of external hatred amongst humanity he mentions in the song (e.g. the “bickering” between religions, r*pe, the presence of gay folks not “going well,” we have trouble figuring out we shouldn’t be a dick, the shaming of natural bodily activity, etc.)

@@keelanelder2946 Since the song is being broad here and trying to cover all religions, it used a generalized way of speaking. That and if I dictate a book to you while you write it down, which of us is the author? In the same way you could consider your god to be the author of your holy book.
@Souledex
@Souledex 2 года назад
I interpret it as the only love that exists is that which we put into the universe. Love unfortunately is way too broad a concept in English, ancient Greek had like 16 words for it. But God is Love is generally the milquetoast takeaway. Love others even when it makes no sense, love thy enemy, love thy friend even when they fail. None of those necessitate abandoning self preservation but engaging in that as a “prayer” as a purposeful mental exercise, to understand those who have harmed you I tend to find helps me accept my own failures and shortcomings too. Just deciding to love yourself in a vacuum for some is about as helpful as “try being happier”, with drugs as help and anything that resets your mental framework purposefully deciding to try and understand how to love others can allow that mindset to recursively apply to a self image. Obviously not the only step but if he’s referencing the Bible that’s Jesus’ take but stated more bluntly that don’t wait for divine intervention, it’s on you. I certainly struggle with all aspects of that, tho I suppose I don’t crave the approval of extradimensional observers, but I do believe engaging the world that way can be productive regardless- assuming you are able to engage the world at all.

"maybe God doesn't believe in you" could also be referring to a world view similar to Deism. Many of our founding fathers were Deists and believed God created the universe but isn't actively managing or even watching us. Like an ant farm sitting forgotten in the corner.

I found everything you said incredibly true. It struck a certain chord with me, too, cause when I listened to the song for the first time, the very first "You're not going to heaven" irritated me, like incredibly. And it also confused me that it had this much power over me since I'm not even that Christian anymore although I have been raised in a very Christian way. Maybe that's why I almost took offense to Bo's sentence, despite not really thinking about heaven and hell in my everyday life. Only when the song progressed, the sentence "You're not going to heaven" felt more and more bitter and sad and I started to really feel bad for what humanity has effectively done to itself and others. I also felt bad for becoming irritated, as I realised my irritation was unjustified and blind. I now hold this song extremely close to my heart, because of its inherent meaning and because it made me reflect on myself, too. Really glad your reaction was so open-minded and smart. The best one out there in my eyes.

@@keelanelder2946 I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but isn't that a pretty bad way to handle things? Like, if a mass murderer believes in god, does that mean they're going to heaven? On the other hand, if someone only does good things, but doesn't believe in god, does that mean they have to go to hell? Because that sounds like a very arrogant way to handle things: if people are part of the "fan club" of god, they get to go to heaven, all of them, otherwise, they don't. Everyone can be wrong, we're only human, and if someone is convinced that another religion is the correct one (or, like me, doesn't know which one to believe in over the others or maybe even none at all), but they are a good person, why would a being as good and powerful as God deny them a good afterlife just due to that?
@Calebthecreator
@Calebthecreator Год назад
@@lilia3944 if you went to heaven and God told you he would be “fair” and judge you according to your standards of what you think “good” is do ynot u think you would live up to those standards? The answer is no. If you ever said it was wrong to lie, mistreat people, be unloving, lust, have horrible thoughts or more do you think you would have a perfect record? Never breaking any rules of your own morality? Really no one is good but God loves us all and if you were a murderer than you wouldn’t want to have to face eternal punishment either. We have all done wrong things wether it be thinking wrong thoughts or having wrong desires or mistreating someone or mistreating God. God is forgiving and I don’t see anything wrong with forgiveness really because it is beautiful and all of us need it. Also please don’t be confused by the term “believing in God” that doesn’t imply just believing he exists but also believing in what he does, says, stands for, and his love for you and the reality of what he wants to do in your life. So it’s more than just believing in the concept of God or believing that he exists. It is more than that.
@lilia3944

@@Calebthecreator Yeah okay, there's my issue - I don't believe in everything the Christian God stands for, at least according to the Bible. I don't think attempting to kill your son (even if God stopped that before he died), no matter who tells you to, should be rewarded. I don't think a god would be in the right to kill, be it through floods or destroying cities, because of negative characteristics of beings he created - punishing others for your own mistakes is never the right thing to do. I haven't read all of the Bible, and it does contain good moral values too - but there's too many passages where God condones or even rewards violence or blind obedience for me to say I agree with the values of the Bible in general. At least in Greek mythology, people agreed that their gods were, at least most of the time, self-centered assholes.

I interpreted the "If you want love, the love has got to come from you" to be more about how devoutly religious people will work so hard to force themselves into a perfect box that their religion says, and they make so many sacrifices in their lives in a desperate attempt to please their God and earn its love- when maybe a much more meaningful love for this life is to learn to accept and love yourself

The key line to me in the whole song is "Maybe life on earth could be heaven, doesn't just the thought of it make it worth the try?". This ties into a lot of the other lines. Like the line about rape, or the love thy neighbour thing that you talked about. And if we made life here on earth heaven, we would have earned the love of God. But as we had heaven on earth, we might not need his love in the way we (ie. religious folks. I am unfortunately not religious though I would love to be. I believe in God though I don’t go to church every Sunday as everyone in my toxic biological father’s family does; I don’t pray every single night before I go to bed as they do either only every now and then I do when I feel the need to when I feel lost or very hopeless, feeling like I should give up living all together but I pray because deep down I don’t want that and I need God’s help to keep me from giving up. To keep me hopeful in my rock bottom moment in life. It helps. I seen/heard my toxic family members talk nasty things about me, my mom and everyone else who they don’t agree with or like but they believe SO much of God and that they are in the right and that I will go to hell just because I cut them off of my life including my father…especially now that I changed my name and their last name out of my identity. I don’t believe I’m a good person, I don’t believe I’m a bad person either however I believe that I am just a young woman, a human being who makes bad and good choices but I’m trying to learn and grow from them because I want to make the best out of my life as much as possible because I only have one life and I don’t want to be depressed, anxious and feeling so hopeless forever…I want to be happy and be stronger than I was before. We should help one another not bring each other down based on our differences and opinions, we should be caring and loving and do the best we can do to help the helpless and the hopeless people we encounter. The world isn’t all black and white, neither isn’t the world all who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy because life is too complex, too messy and mangled and only seen as one sided because we don’t see nor think that way. If we all did good for the soul purpose because you care, because that voice Within you gave you the feeling/the thought to help that person who needs it…because you care, and something is telling that you need to share them something that is yours either buy a homeless person food for them to eat, spare money or when you see someone who’s having a mental breakdown in public who’s crying try to talk to them help them to have someone to talk to and take them outside or somewhere else get a coffee or anything and just talk or just listen. Try to put yourself in the hopeless/helpless shoes and wonder what you would’ve wanted and needed and be exactly that person and help said stranger who’s suffering. We will not see how much of an impact we do by doing one such simple selfless action to help can do for that person…that person will remember that and help another person in need or tell another their encounter with you in memory just for you being you and doing what you felt was right in that moment. You did a good thing and you feel good that you helped their life to be a little less darker and hopeless, life is still worth living. That’s what I feel what God wants us to be and do but how should I know right? I’m just doing because I feel like it’s right and because I can’t ignore that feeling when I can have the choice to do something to help. Just try, everyone has nothing to lose by just doing something to help, being kind isn’t going to cost you anything.

I'm so glad I found you while on my Bo-reactions hunt! It's rare to see people actually understand the meaning behind every lyric on first listen. 90% of reactions I saw only paused to say something dumb, so their vid would qualify as a "reaction", but you use the pauses to discuss and analyze, so refreshing! For other songs I would recommend some stuff from his "what." special: specifically "Left Brain, Right Brain", "Sad", "Repeat Stuff" (

genuinely, youre one of the best reaction channels ive ever watched. most reaction channels are fine and fun, but i love how you break down the music so smartly, you explain things incredibly well, i didnt grow up exposed to a lot of religion, my grandmother is a catholic and ive always been very close to her but shes never once tried to make me religious , and ive spent a long time not quite understanding the line "my loves the type of thing you have to earn, and when you earn it you wont need it" i felt like i got it but i couldnt put it into words, and you did exactly that. and i really CAN tell you went to school for music, im genuinely shocked youre just a normal reaction channel and not a professional music theorist. musical philosopher guy. i feel like youd make a fantastic teacher i think. ive never subscribed to a reaction channel but today i will be :D

As a Christian, I really appreciated your reaction to this song. And I love how Bo is able to write songs like this and yet still have respect for people of faith. I've heard him say in several interviews things like, "I don't really believe in God, but there are a lot of really smart people who do." Or "I don't know if God exists, but my mom loves Jesus, and she's great." Like you, even if I don't necessarily agree with the theology of this song, I really appreciate the questions it is asking, and that I think we all need to wrestle with at some point.

i know this song is titled “from god’s perspective” and that he’s pretending to be literally God, but when he says “i’m not gonna give you love just because you want me to, if you want it then it has to come from you”, something about that feels deeper to me than just bo acting out a character. that felt like bo was really talking as himself for a second there. and it would make sense. you’ve seen him perform “art is dead” where he’s tells the audience “i’m just a kid, i’m just an artist. i’m not your god, please don’t worship and revere me.” i get those same vibes with this performance. like yes, the point of this song is to speak as though he’s literally God, but in a deeper, more subtle way, it’s like he’s kinda playing into/satirizing the way the general public completely worships their celebrity idols. or maybe i’m reading way too much into it. that was the gut feeling that i got, though.

I really like your reactions to Bo Burnham's songs! You have such a good understanding of lyrics and you also show a lot of respect to him and his songs. You were the first RU-vidr I watched who reacted to his songs, and I watched a lot of reactions after but yours are still my favorite. And about "my love's a type of thing you need to earn and when you earn it you won't need it" line. I always thought about it in a way that people struggle so much throughout life to earn God's love and miss so many opportunities for what? To live this boring type of life in heaven for the rest of the eternity? Like isn't life on Earth is given to you for living it happily and trying all different interesting things before you'll die? But anyway your take is also very interesting and very much possible.

I really love the way you take this, while I might not be a Christian anymore. (Grew up and was raised as one, a very strict household on the matter) this is what I wished religion was like and still do. If religion is real and what they believe in I wish they did have that look on life. You don’t impress god or deities. You earn it by being a good person. Thanks for reacting to this. While my family has accepted that I’m no longer religious, I’m glad that they have learned to have this out look instead of what was originally there when I was a kid.

This whole song just reminds me of a famous quote from Marcus Aurelius. It's along the lines of a just god wont care how devout you are, they will care if you are a good person. If a god wanted you to you be devout over good then they aren't a god you should worship in the first place and whether there is a god or not you will still have lived a good life.

I think the point of "my love is the type of thing you have to earn and when you earn it you won't need it" is essentially saying that in order to earn God's love you must be a pure loving being who makes it their mission to make life on earth heavenly, thus neglecting the nessecity for a heavenly afterlife.
@cadyisawkward1289
@cadyisawkward1289 3 года назад
I was also raise christian/baptist (although at the current moment I'm very much not) and I do actually like your way of going about reacting to this from both potential sides of religious bias. I also have some thoughts on lines; I think that within the line "I loves the type of thing that you have to earn, and when you earn it you don't need it" it is referring back to the previous lines where he says "maybe life on earth could be heaven". I take it as him talking about all the hateful and awful things people do in "the name of God" in order to gain what they believe to be God's love when in reality after all of that time you spent trying to earn it you ended up dead and wrong anyway. Life could be heaven where everyone gets along in harmony but instead, people spend their lives being harmful to each other trying to prove themselves right in the name of their gods and waste the one life they did have being hateful. - So in the end life could be heaven, but because you spent your entire life being hateful, not only did you waste your only life, but when you die and get to whatever god you were preaching for, you probably won't gain entry to heaven anyway because of how you wasted your life.

Man, I love your takes. It's like watching my brain processing the info the first time I heard it. He's a Boston Catholic boy who questioned the system the Church forced down his throat, but he didn't lose the message of religion and is critical of those who are missing the point, which sadly is damn near everyone who prays to someone. Me vs. You, yet all their Gods say treat people with kindness and respect. Hmmm...

I love so many lines in this, and yes, thought provoking is the right way to put it. Bo is not a comedian or a musician (not solely at least) he's a philosopher of our modern age (and it's so funny to me that all the people I consider in that same category, Tim Minchin, Trevor Noah, Jon Stewart, are geniunely great comedic talents). But apart from the internal construction of the song, which is brilliant, watching back to back reactions alerts me to the little meta tidbits he puts in all his work, like, you wouldn't have known because you hadn't seen it yet, but remember in 'We think we know you' how Satan, Lord of Darkness gets a single line of cameo in voice, but from God's perspective it's only crickets? And these parallels keep creeping up (All eyes on Me being a stylistic and historical continuation of the Kanye Rant is another example) which shows just how deep Bo thinks into his works not only horizontally but also vertically. It's breathtaking and awesome to watch. Btw, I enjoy your analyses a lot, really diving into the interpretation gives a reaction video a better purpose (than Bo's at least ;) You'll see when you watch Unpaid Intern, from Inside...)

I think your breakdown of the song was quite good and well considered. I have liked this song since I first caught it on Netflix because it has so many paths for deeper thought and contemplation. If god were a real thing, an omnipotent all knowing creator of everything, I'd have to assume it would have an outlook on the universe far closer to Bo's than most religious books interpretations. That's to say nothing of his lines about heaven though, I feel in those he was playing into the god hypothetical. Even assuming a generic god being existed that created everything, there's still several more assumptions that would have to be made for a heaven that God is hosting to be a thing, let alone souls existing, where heaven could exist, how souls could travel there, etcetera. I feel like I'm getting preachy, I'll stop hopefully before I become a nuisance, but thank you for the earnest take on the video.
