We take a step back in time to reflect on the rave community and culture spanning over the last 25 years. From McKean street warehouse days, to taking over spaces we know and love like the Forum for 3000 person raves, to discussing the lost sense of collectivism caused by scene population explosion - and how we can adapt.
Sit back, watch and get familiar with one of the most experienced and knowledgable raver-turned-professional that we have here in Melbourne.
Producer: Beat Repeat (Eliza Holliday & Adam Cain)

"Why" - D Livin
"Get On Up" (Chris Liebing Mix) - DJ Rush
"PART 1" - FLR
"Go" - MOBY

Filter on Wednesday nites at the Lounge also was a magical time mid 90s. Voodoo techno nite. And Teriyaki was Thursday nites where Max Watts is now. Also MUD (melbourne underground development) parties were incredible.

Hell to the yeah. Worked at The Lounge 95/96 but was there for years before. Was there anywhere to go to meet ppl who’d take you to the extreme creative parties. I wished I remembered names of all the ppl and places I wld just trudge to to be involved in most new and innovative scenes. Mostly I remember the better but until Club Fuck and The Lounge lost its big names and uniqueness it was harder to track names and places names. It was so fluid. You’d know where to be for nye in Sydney also. The 303 fsom Ollie Olsen voiteck Andrew till guys wld give a feel where to go to. If I collected names that are in my memory of experiences I’d be able to re-find myself… At 51 I don’t think my tastes have changed just expanded. 1990s truly can’t be messed with. The Lounge was the best place to meet and find new ventures imho. Rip.

I grew up in Melbourne’s rave and festival scene alongside Bo Kitty - this sure was a flashback and a fabulous representation of our roots. That was such a time of freedom and expression that will never be able to be recreated - we were damn lucky to be a part of this unique cultural explosion! Ah the memories :) Great interview Bo!

Everyone feels that way about their rave days. It’s cyclical, I’m 24, living amongst the rave scene in Melbourne. All my friends feel this way about our scene at the moment.
@beccadakini
@beccadakini 2 месяца назад
@@jaypeluso5053 actually no - you sadly do not have the same amount of freedom we had back then. At all. And how would you know? You weren’t born yet. I’m glad you’re having an awesome rave era, but you’re not gonna be able to tell anyone who was raving in the 90s/2000s you have the same freedoms today or that’s it’s the same 😂 Also you’re missing the point that THAT WAS WHEN THIS ALL STARTED - today’s rave culture has been regurgitated over and over again to become what it is today. There’s magic in the beginnings of things.

i remember the public liability insurance that went through the roof at that time closed events down and that was a death for a lot of the scene . that pushed together sub cultures also. one of my favourite moment at teriyakianarkisa was walking into the toilet see a guy from London throwing up . i asked him if he needed water " na man im nervous ive come from london with two crates of records and im up next, i dont know what to do ". while i was saying youll be fine hey some random puts his head over my shoulder and say . " mmmaaatttteeee ! just go fuckin haaaarrrrddddd or go back to london ............ holy shit his set was one of if not the best set ive ever witnessed . poor dee dee after him worked really hard to pick it back up.

I know this might be a weird thing to say, but the modular synth community in Melbourne is where it is at for me at the moment. We have some great people, some from the old crews, together with the younger artists, and people from the current electronic scenes, all coming together in appreciation for a method of making electronic music, in it's many forms. I love it.

It’s good to see the interview of people behind the scene. 👍👍👍👍. One thing I love about Melbourne music scene is the diversity and multiculturalism.

I've been part of the Melbourne rave scene from 2011 - 2014 and everything she says is on point. Even more so you find similar evolutions throughout the world. Where i'm from, Mauritius - it's the same thing. Which is why I decided to quit Djing and making money from the underground scene and learn to be a pure punter again !

Money will always corrupt a festival - the need to appeal to the masses will always have a detrimental effect on music art and culture, and on us as individuals as a result.

She sounds so much like she lived in the USA or Canada at some point. I swear her accent isn't purely Aussie...as an American she could pass for being from here. I'm just curious lol... But i love hearing her story from another time and place. It seems the heyday was the same time all around the world...

12:51 she’s sooo right here. I went to the 2022 festival x, they took sunscreen off you at the gate at a hot day, you had to go alll the way to the far corners of the first aid tents with shit sunscreen. Who can honestly be fucked walking all the way there every couple hours? Festival x made it really difficult to navigate a shit app for the line up, and bins were overflowing… but they had Calvin harris!!!! No it was fucken shit. Sorry hardware… In contrast to LTEC, who handed out sunscreen around the venue, very approachable staff, art installations were fun, they had the lovely people picking up rubbish, plenty shade and places to relax and food truck game rocked. Attention to detail well and truly noted there

This is the alternative 'rave' scene. The first 2-3 EPTAS were good. After that, it went feral and disorganised.

The worst part of the early Melbourne rave scene was the ridiculous fashion and aesthetic design. The best parties were Wetmusik’s that had none of that and were just about the music music music.
