It seems strange but people have been asking for a boa care guide from this python channel. So here it is, a complete care guide for the Boa Imperator! We'll talk about heat & humidity, lights, caging, feeding, handling, temperament and a few bonus boa topics - all while seeing some lovely shots of the official Green Room Pythons mascot, Handsome Dan (a boa).

Several of my boas are so food motivated that they strike at the glass when they see any movement, especially when there's food in the room. One will even drop his rat so he can 'hunt' something else (usually me walking past the viv trying to feed the other snakes! 😅) A few times I've had to help one unstick their teeth from their lip because they've got excited and hit the glass 🤦‍♀They're never spicy once they know there's no food though. I love boas because they have more character than ball pythons (I have quite a few of both) BPs have a tendency to just sit in your lap or wherever you put them, whereas I find boas to be more curious and interactive. But they're also not anywhere near as active as corn/rat snakes who just always want to go somewhere, you can't take your eye off them for a second!

My highschool teacher had a huge female boa that he would bring in once a year and she really inspired my love for snakes. At the same time, there's no way I could handle/care for a snake that big, she was massive!

I have to say the only way I've been able to keep up the humidity with my BP, is to do what you said Bob. Except I use a small glad ware and keep it full of his chips, and soak it. When his humidity drops I rotate the chips, and do it again with some drier chips of substrate in his enclosure. Listen to Bob here all, he knows his 💩 lol ❤️

I agree with everything i will add that you can use heat tape on PVC if the enclosure is routed out(cut out) for it. But the sources you cited are great as well. Some boas are cooler than others also hanging out around 85. Been keeping boas 15+ years. Awesome video!!! 🎉 So cool seeing how much you do for all of your snakes but especially Handsome Dan. It legitimately makes me so happy. Youre an incredible keeper and I absolutely love this channel especially when you touch on boas! Very well said about over feeding! The schedule you stated is pretty much exactly what I use. I do change the feeding schedule here and there since in the wild it wouldnt be clock work but thats just me and helps work around my work schedule. 🤙

My bcc boa has a hide that gets to mid 60's in the winter, about room temp, while the warm side is still 92 degrees. I find her as low as 64 pretty regularly, just deciding for some reason she'd rather be in that coldest-possible hide, rather then the full gradient of normally-temped hides she has access too and also regularly uses.

I have my ball python in a 3x4 grow tent that's 6 feet tall and he climbs the tent poles to the top. He spirals around the extension cord up to the top of the tent. I have branches that go up 3 feet to a shelf and that's usually where i find him. He comes out every night around 10-12pm and 75% of the time he's off the ground. I have tons of pictures

I've had my baby boa for a week now & I also have her cage in a grow tent. I'm new to owning a snake & I want to make her happy, she seems like a happy girl. When she comes out round 10 i like to take her out & let her climb the fig trees in my home, she loves that. I take her on walks too. That's a good idea how you utilize the space in your tent. You just gave me ideas on how to really maximize the space for her!

@@brownsugashawty Nice!! She sounds amazing!! There's a lot of versatility in keeping them in a grow tent. I even put a cheap humidifier in there set to 65%. Absolutely agree with @caughtafaygo! I keep my boss a couple of degrees cooler than a Ball Python (they seem to prefer it). The only thing I would’ve added in is something that scares most people about boas… They’re always in the "S" position but that doesn’t mean they’re going to strike, that’s just how they are. A little different to read their body language. Great video as always Bob!

I'm sorry.This is on a random video.But I really need help because i'm not sure if there's something wrong with my snake or if he's just in a bad mood I can't get him into the vet for another week or two. I have a young ball python who is really well exposed to people And has been handled frequently in his life but My depression has kind of gotten a little out of control and I haven't handled him as much as I should have (Which i'm thinking might be the cause) But I always do a quick stroke on his back before.I pick him up so that he knows.That's what i'm doing and to see if he's okay with it This last time I did it he went crazy And was flipping around And scooting, not even like slithering.Just scooting places he tried to constrict his cave He calmed down after about twenty seconds of this but was still flipping his tail around This is obvious signs of stress, but I'm not sure how to fix it.I'm a fairly new snake owner and I don't know what I did but I'm reallyscared i hurt him@GreenRoomPythons
@annas5303
@annas5303 3 месяца назад
@@classyrebel2939I only got my first BP recently, but what you described sounds like a stress response from the petting on his back. I would never do that to any snake, it feels to them like a predator got him. It's not a dog or cat that needs petting, esp from the top of him. Before I do anything in his enclosure (but not when feeding!) I knock on the side so he has time to wake up and wait at least half a minute, if I need to move him or get him out I first lift the hide he's usually in, give him some time to adjust and then lift him by scooping under him in his middle from behind. When I do have him out I always wait till he's relaxed and calm and only then put him back in, never put him back in just after he gets scared or agressive (mine isn't but some are spicy). Hope that helped.

I rescued a 5ft BCI she came with her 4x2x2 Viv but she really outgrew it. When out of her Viv she would “climb” around my office up on my curtains, over my guitar racks etc. her new Viv is 4x3x4 and a week or two of acclimation and she’s more active than ever. Due to the height of her Viv I have a heat Mat under her low hide that comes out at 10pm and off at 8am and set to 25 degrees. The warm low side has a 50w deep heat projector set to a max 30 degrees and comes on at 7am and ramps the temps from 20 degrees to 30 degrees over 5 hours. Main lighting is an Arcadia Lumenize Jungle Dawn giving 12/12 day/night and a natural day night cycle. The high warm side is run off a 150w deep heat projector that heats to 32 and drops to 30 at night. All heat sources are running from a Microclimate EVO 4 channel thermostat which controls the heat curves. Sounds complicated but she has a wide range of temperatures and her feeding has significantly improved.

My B.C.I. has a heat pad underneath with a temp controller to keep it at a set temperature that stays on 24/7. Then, I have the overhead lighting with both heat and UVB bulbs that are on timers. Giant water dish I bought from local reptile expo and a fogger that I use to keep humidity up which I've dialed in perfectly using temp gun and gauges and she sheds perfectly every single time and always has since her 2nd shed when I got her. She's almost 5, and I've only been bit twice, and both times, it was my own fault.

Great video, thanks. I have a question about temperature gradients. Our Hog island boa has one, inasmuch as one end of her vivarium is warmer than the other, but it’s a lot cooler in some places than in others. Her basking spot is at 95 f / 35 c, but the temperature drops off very quickly, so that there are large areas that are only in the 70s/20s. To paint a complete picture, her viv is 48”x18”x18”, and it’s heated by a halogen lamp during the day, a DHP at night. She also has a second DHP midway along ceiling, to stop the temperature getting too low at the cold end, and this is on all the time. As a result, there’s another warm zone in the middle of the viv. Meanwhile, the ceiling at the cool end is around 86f / 30c, and this is where she spends a lot of her time, curled in the wires that we’ve strung up there for her to crawl along and curl up in. Generally, when she’s not on her wires, she favours the hide at the cool end, although she does use the one at the warm end too. Do you think this uneven distribution of heat is a problem? Sorry for the long post!

Hi bob,I have a bci boa named ivy and she is 11 months old she will be one on April 3rd. I have a important question to ask about the heating, bc I did a lot of research before I got her but I’m coming to realise that i might have been told the wrong information, as I asked these reptile workers where I got ivy and they told me to get this bulb that has a light in it and when I asked what I should do at night time bc I don’t want to sleep with the light on and they said to just unplug the light as the temperature goes down at night time and I have been doing this since November and it’s now march so i really wold like some advice one what to do as I don’t want her to be cold at night. also about handling I use a snake hook to get her out as she has a spicy personality sometimes. I want her get to know me so I try and handle her once or twice a week, sometimes I forget to do it one week so I might get her out twice but she is my first boa and I’m trying to get used to her, but you said that sometimes they don’t want to get out and that you let handsome Dan smell you and let him climb on you, with me and ivy I think she will bite me or something idk if you have any other tips on how to handle a boa without them getting stressed that so be amazing!!!

Question about Dan: We recently rescued a BI with little info of-course, only that it’s a male & 2 1/2 yrs old. He is just over 5ft and looks pretty thin at 3 1/2 pounds. He has eaten well for us so far and been super calm cool guy. His marking/ patterns & colors look identical to Dan with a perfect black sharpie mustache 😂 Just curious if his markings & colors are specific or point to any gene or location? Herd you say he was from Central America (dwarf locale). Just wondering , doesn’t really matter other than Id like to be more Confident on his age but Thanks for any info if possible. We have multiple BP’s but newer to the Boa world.

Dan is a central American t-positive albino fire. There are a number of genes that create a t-positive albino snake and Dan's is Central American but he would look exactly the same as any other t-positive albino. It's also difficult in a video to compare one snake to another because they always look slightly different in a video.

Hey! I’m a relatively new boa keeper - I just got my first snake at the beginning of February. She’s a little over 5 months old at this point. My breeder told me to feed her twice and then wait for her to poop before feeding her again. I did the first time, and she had a poop 10 days after her second feed. I fed her on Thursday the 7th and on the 14th. She hasn’t pooped yet. Will I be okay to feed her? Or should I wait? Any advice on feeding and bathroom habits??
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 5 месяцев назад
Most people who keep arboreal boas feed that way. It's important to see them poop before giving another meal because tree boas are prone to prolapse. It's not as necessary with BI or BC but it's fine to do it that way if you want.

Does ambient temperature matter? I have a 4x2x2 set up that I'm getting everything adjusted before I bring my boa home. I have an 80w rhp on a VE-200 thermostat. The top of the Hot hide is 89/90 and my cold side is 77-80 depending on where the temp gun is pointed. My thermometer/hygrometer are reading 82 degrees hot side and 76 cool side. Should I be worried about ambient temp, or only surface temp? Thank you!
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 4 месяца назад
Make sure your thermometer hygrometer is sitting on the floor where the snake is. It will read a closer temperature to where the snake is going to be. Sounds like your temps are pretty good though based on your temp gun readings
@treeafodo1
@treeafodo1 4 месяца назад
Those readings are with the thermometer/hygrometer sitting next to either hide. I'm thinking the RHP is sinking it's heat into the hides rather than the air temp? I keep reading mixed things about surface vs ambient temp. I appreciate the response!
