If puzzles are a type of game, are games a type of puzzle? Games weirdo Amabel Holland takes an expansive definition of “puzzle” to highlight it as a fundamental building block of modern game design, and talks about the way puzzles can be designed to bring a player into a complex game. another interesting example is chess puzzles, though they lack some of the better features of puzzles you discuss. But it's literally just all the same rules from the game of chess, but imagining that you extract all the best possible moves from an opponent and that's the puzzle you play on your own, and for many people chess puzzles are more enjoyable than actually playing chess. Any chess position can be a puzzle (sort of) and any chess puzzle can be played as a game. Though most of the very best puzzles are positions you would never ever find in an actual game of chess. I wonder which other board games are expressive enough to produce puzzly game states that you wouldn't encounter in normal play.

I know Magic: the Gathering puzzles are close to chess puzzles, as they create a fictional game state where you have to come out with a win. The best Magic puzzles also aren't plausible scenarios. They can be very rich, using obscure interactions and deep game knowledge. They also have a long history, dating back to 90s magazines.

Excellent, thoughtful video! I consider games and puzzles to be on a spectrum ... how much puzzle is in any game, and how much game is in any puzzle? I recently finished a playthrough of MMP's The Mighty Endeavor on my channel, and I consider the Allied supply chain to be a big puzzle to solve with the proper interconnection of Beach Ports, permanent Ports, Trucks, and HQs. I consider The Mighty Endeavor to be a good game, partly because of this really challenging puzzle contained therein.

I'm trying to design currently an rpg game system (like D&D) where combat is similar to Into the Breach and every stage is a puzzle for the players to solve, as the players need to figure out the best way to defeat their enemies I saw the thumbnail of the video, talking about video games as puzzles and Into the Breach board, and was like "Oh, a specific video just for me exactly? Yay!" :D (Also my girlfriend says she likes/wants your hat❤) And yes, my favourite board games are more puzzle-like and relying less on luck and more on player skill, so I am completly down with al of this

I know that Into the Breach is more my kinda game. Better designed. Well though-out. But holy shit Godzilla! Biolante! Ghidorah! I hope the game is still ok in some way even if not as good as ItB.

Puzzles are puzzles - they have a single solution. Games, which may incorporate puzzles, are different - they have potentially many different solutions.
