“Through her crimes of murder she uncovered another type of crime, which is society’s ability to completely abandon people who suffer from mental illness and/or find themselves homeless.”-Dr. Grande, this is such a powerful and insightful statement, well said. Unfortunately, there are so many Dorotheas in the world- people who take advantage of the most vulnerable in society. Excellent review, thank you so much Dr. Grande.❤️

How do you think they were living? Rather than "completely abandoned" by society, all of them were receiving financial aid - aid sufficient for Puente to kill for to get. And, rather than homeless, they all also had a shelter over their heads.

My ex roommate/landlady looked like a perfectly nice older lady and went to church too. Turned out she was a nut job, and I have a hard time using such derogatory language, but nothing else fits. When I realized that there was something VERY wrong with her, I gave her 30 days notice for me to leave. In that time she set me up with a myriad of insane and bogus accusations. She had her church friend come over and played up this perfect Christian act as I moved my stuff out. It was the creepy cherry on top. Once I moved out was when the fraudulent activity started. She sued me for $7500 (the max in small claims) for totally made up damages and made up stories about my excessive drug use and disturbing behavior. She got her boyfriend to come to court and lie about me- a man I met for 2 minutes once. Little did she know I was documenting stuff while I was there AND I am a fighter. That may sound cheesy but it matters because she had done this to about a dozen other roommates before me (I did a background check on her) and they were all intimidated by her, so she had learned to use the system to harass and punish people. I refused to allow her to keep doing this crap to innocent people. Long story short I countersued and showered up to court with receipts and a bunch of witnesses. I won that case- outing her to the entire city, showing them what a fraud she is. Anyway- it taught me 2 valuable lessons: 1) women can be just as dangerous as men, and 2) frauds know how to use religion, and their looks to make themselves seem trustworthy. Now I am skeptical about everyone until I get to know them well. But at least I got a valuable lesson out of it. This served me really well when Amber heard accused Johnny Depp of abusing her. Turns out she totally made all of that up too. These women have something in common- they’re both BPD’s (borderline). And lemme tell you, an untreated BPD is some scary sh!t.

My brother had brought up several times, while we were growing up, how my mom slashed his back with one of those three-pronged hand held gardening tools. He was three years old and she never had an answer as to why she did it. Our house was full of abuse from both parents, and a creepy uncle that zeroed in on me. But, it can’t be changed and ruminating on it won’t do me any good, though that has crossed my mind many times

This is a fascinating case. Dorothea is prime example of someone who grows up as an unwanted child suffering in orphanages to become a cold and calculating murderer. The criminal justice system failed society when it let her off for a felony scheme to steal social security checks. She should have gone to prison for 10 years for that offense. If the rule of law had been followed, she would have been incarcerated before she was able to commit 9 or 10 murders in the bordering house.

@tessaducek5601
@tessaducek5601 Год назад
Because she would not have started another boarding house after getting out. And victimized different people. Sure, that's logical! You have her out come of a horrible life concluded and wrapped up nice and tidy. Explain all of the people that grew up in well to do and even opulent homes that went on to murder! Upbringing is not the cut and dried explanation many think. People can be damaged regardless of upbringing.

So much traffic, couldn't even get in or out of the area without crowds in the way, delays. Really crazy. The latest owners are good sports about it. An amusing sign on the gate. Changed over the years. Like, 'keep out from under the grass.' The house is innocent, we didn't do it' Now the sign says, 'Do not park across the driveway. The ghosts like to get out to terrorize the neighborhood' lol. A Dorothea mannequin, effigy, in the yard on occasion. Especially at Halloween. It's a touristy thing. I lived in Sacramento at the time of her arrest and I saw the boarding house. Dr Grande is right about society’s ability to abandon its most vulnerable citizens. Puente’s crimes escalated from early check forgery to eventually murder. A clear example of failed community supervision. I always think it’s weird when I see offenders characterized as “evil” since “evil” is a biblical term. People are products of their early childhood experiences and their hereditary traits. Puente wasn’t so much evil as she was a real bad irredeemable citizen who couldn’t be reformed with any amount of intervention from law enforcement. The whole story is really gross.

I do think some acts can really ONLY be described as EVIL- but I do completely understand what you're saying here! Just some things I see happen in the world- biblical or not, religious or Atheist, I sometimes see something I can ONLY describe or define in my brain as pure "Evil". Maybe it has taken on more than just a Biblical meaning in modern times? I do have a hard time labeling PEOPLE in general as "Evil", based on the things you pointed out- as in I can't understand what a person has been through to make them come to do the things they do or become who they become, so I understand what you mean.

I did grow up very religious, Mormons- I'm not very religious these days, perhaps the term and idea of "Evil" do have some root in my growing up the way I did, but I think as humans when you see horrible, inhumane things, or children being horribly harmed or killed, etc.- sometimes I just feel like "VERY BAD" just doesn't cover it, and "Pure EVIL" is the only description that my brain will accept, but it doesn't feel like a Biblical or Religious thing to me. Dear Dr G. a great checked shirt. This analysis highlights your extraordinary talent at explaining a very complex crimes in a simple clear and engaging manner. In this case highlighting the tragic marginalisation of whole class of financially and mentally unwell individuals. Engaging and brilliant. Regards from your Loyal Aussie fan and promoter.

Your final statement of how "society's ability to completely abandon people who suffer from mental illness, and or, find themselves homeless." was incredibly touching! ♡

A docuseries called "Worst Roommate Ever" did a piece about this woman. When the police searched her house, the smell of death led them to a room that had several layers of carpet on the floor. As they removed the layers of carpet, the odor intensified and stains from decomposition fluids were revealed. Apparently, she kept her victims in that room for periods of time until she had the opportunity to drag them into her yard for burial. What baffles me is how that woman was able to move the bodies. Dragging a body is a strenuous task that requires a lot of physical strength and can be time consuming--even for young, able-bodied people. I know she was younger than she appeared, but I still wonder.

I purposely waited a few weeks to view this one, as Sacramento has been my home for several decades. This case was local and up front in the news for a long, long time, so that we got many unpleasant details. The “F Street murders” graphically showcased how easy it was, and is, to pay little or no attention to those who are elderly, ill, and without family. Nobody needed to scratch the surface too deeply to find that Dorothea was not anybody’s idea of a caring person. I think you summed up Dorothea’s mental illnesses 100% accurately.

"How the Elderly Become Socially Irrelevant": This case is instructive, especially on the issue of elder abuse. Dorothea Puente is one of the least interesting criminals on record. When you look for "Murderers, boring type" Puente's life is used as an example. We can say this because there is no record of Puente ever, ever saying anything of the remotest interest to anyone. It's exactly this one-dimensional aspect of her character and career that stands out. In fact if you survey the majority of murderers you'll find they lack any depth, have rarely thought of anything beyond the phenomenal order of things, and idle away hours between their horrible deeds. If I may speculate for a moment, it's my sense that murderers know they are boring and the only excitement they find in human experience is listening to the screams that are heard through the entire house and then, as a sort of relish, victims begging for mercy. Consider this: Ask a murderer to provide a brief summary of a good book. Usually what you'll get is an incoherent mishmash of nonsense. One example that stands out in this case is Puente's instructions on how to make a six by four foot box. For Puente, life was all about having her sticky hands on Social Security checks. Why did this go on for so long? Because the elderly are irrelevant. No one cares about them. They are isolated, or sent out to pasture, or a backyard grave. Thanks for reading. Tell your older relatives what they have to look forward to. Hopefully they will not need to spend their remaining days in Puente's boarding house.

Lots of willful blindness goes on. I agree it's a crime to abandon the mentally ill and homeless. It's happening more and more. There just really isn't any housing. It amazes me how many families turn their backs on struggling family members. This just leaves people open to be preyed upon in so many ways. This woman took it to the extreme. We've had cases like this in Canada, too. Sad state of affairs. Thanks again for another great analysis, Dr. Grande and drawing attention to this huge problem 👍❤️⚔️🔥🐴
