Great video guys!! Lucky you have that smart german blood in your veins Karl!!! And that electrical apprenticeship you did was pretty usefull!!Most of us mere men including me would just throw our hands in the air and say i can't figure this out and call in an expert! Hang in there and hope you get out there on the water soon!!

Gday korkers, I hope everything is going well for you. We are almost ready to get out on the water….just a few more jobs to sort out 👍

I just bought the bees knees gas soldering iron in town a few weeks back. $70 though. Bernzomatic. It will do very fine circuitry or massive end ring terminals on AWG 6 battery cables depending on which tip you use. I prefer just the straight gas tip for most stuff.

They are very helpful tools, I like them. Also good if it is a little windy when soldering, as they still have enough heat in them to do the job. Thanks for all your thoughts and info, we appreciate it.

I love how you dive in and nut things out Karl. You are one of a rare breed - most toss their hands in the air and pay thousands for some expert to do SFA.

@nowhereboundtouring 9 месяцев назад
Gday Ben, Thanks, we sort of have no choice, as we could not afford to pay to have someone else fix it all. The knowledge gained from sorting stuff out always helps later, when you are away from town and you break down. Thanks for coming along with us on our journey 👍

@@nowhereboundtouring I agree 100% - not just saving money but also working out how this stuff works so you can fix it, or at least deal with it. You won't get an expert when you guys are half way to sailing to Santorini!

Yep, that’s what I think too.

You need to have the compass adjusted by a licensed compass adjuster. Amongst other things the magnetic field around the compass changes depending on what direction the boat is facing in because a steel boat has its own magnetic field which moves around. For example If you set it so North on the compass is facing the bow of the boat and the bow has the strongest magnetic pull and adjust it to that then when the boat is pointing South the field is reversed. That is why a compass adjuster swings the compass with the boat facing in different directions around the compass and then puts in magnets to get the best average position. After that he will also supply a magnetic deviation card which will tell you how much correction needs to be applied on each different heading you sail. The best thing for a steel boat these days is a GPS driven heading source at the helm (A chart plotter is perfect or a repeater for one at the nav station) and the tradition compass as a standby source. On passage you will steer of a GPS course 99% of the time as you will put all your trip planning into a chart plotter.

Gday Robert, I’m going to give “ swinging the compass” a go by my self, and see how good I can get it. That is once we get out of the marina 👍

Aren’t those connectors supposed to be heated sufficiently to melt the solder in the centre for a proper join and of course heat shrunk to make them waterproof? Dodgy DIY rather than dodgy connectors I’d say. If there were dodgy connections at the display but the transponder is still not sending a strong signal to it then I would assume that there’s another loose connection between the transponder and the display. You might need to trace that cable for its full length. You commented that the wires were very thin, maybe upgrade to AWG 12 or 10 if it’s a long distance from the transponder to the display to cancel out any voltage loss. Veggies are looking great, that is a chilli not a capsicum, Bundy and the Wide Bay provides 25% of Australia’s fresh produce so your veggies are in the best place!

Gday Tee, Yes, I think you are correct. The sonar is now working better, but we will see when we are out in the ocean, compared to the shallow murky river we are currently in. 👍 Cheers

@antoninosolano7667

The sonar does not now if you are moving so it show a flat line because it feeds back the same information but it could be picking up intefirance just like your compass

Those little crimp things are supposed to be heated with a flame to melt the solder in the middle and heat shrink the ends

FYI...those crimp connections are great for us guys that maintain electrical cabling. They are the best thing the chinese have ever done to allow us to build our bottom line.....Like the chinese boat, they are JUNK...never use them, throw out any that you still have and dont be conned by the "solder melt" myth associated with their blurb.....just sayin...
