Thank you for a very well presented video on boat wiring. I have a used pontoon damaged in a storm. I am working in putting it back together including fixing the damaged wiring. You method of illustrating the wiring connection was simple and clear. A simple ladder diagram at the end of the video would be a bonus. Thank you

Very nice, very clear and simple! Having been knee deep in re-wiring my boat over the past two weeks I will say the installation of two fuse boxes (one for ignition power and another unswitched power to run devices while the engine is off) is of paramount importance. Also adding a buss bar would be a good idea.

Your missing the most important detail of all on this diagram. Isolation master switch to isolate power coming from the battery. This is the only way to make safe in a fuel spill or long term battery power loss.

Hi john8615, thanks for watching, I didn’t add the isolating switch in this wiring diagram because I do my wiring diagrams in parts. That way it"s less confusing. When to much stuff is on the diagram it could become complicated. I do have another video that adds the isolation switch. Good video work for a basic wiring layout! For my bilge pump and float, I chose to "parallel" ( instead of being in "series" like your schematic) the float switch to the pump and it has it's own direct to battery ( but fused) +12V connection, and, instead of that bilge pump power going direct to the fuse panel, my boat's original wiring has it switched at the helm, so I kept that function and can operate it manually or let the float turn it on when needed. I also have a 10 Amp charger/ maintainer ( Minn Kota brand- absolutely fantastic charger) connected direct to the battery with its inline fuses, then, everything else is on a master disconnect to a Blue Sea 150A panel. This way, when I am docked and I can get 115VAC shore power, I can shut off the main disconnect, BUT, my charger is connected to the battery, and the bilge pump will do its own thing, without needing the main disconnect ( which is hidden in a locking access panel) to be left on. This will insure that the bilge pump will work and the battery charger will replenish any charge when it is operating as well, and any ignition and accessory function is killed to prevent any "hot wiring" attempts.

Hi Internutt 1960, Thanks for watching and your nice comments. Yes, I have my pump running in parallel with manual switch and float switch. always the best way to do it. Very good information Joe. Iv been working on my 2018 Triton SF18 Bass/Ski Boat for a month now. I Have two Helix 12 ,minkota Ultrex, trolling motor with its own battery source and decided to add Humminbird mega Live and mega 360. Iv added a Helix 10 for the down imaging . Both units require their own on and off switches and fuses. All went well until I add a ( Y ) cable to have the ability to monitor both down imaging and 🪧 on the same unit. Also, I have an ethernet hub from Hummingbird, connecting all graphs. I have a separate power source a 30 amp milliamp Lipo battery connected to the ( Y )cable , and realized that I had two different power sources entering the same unit. And my boat shorted out . Where should I start the Diagnosis ? To locate the short. I have a Honda 170 HP engine lost power to the tilt . Both circuit breakers did not trip. All batteries checked out fine. any suggestions where I should start to diagnose?
@joetheboatguy5394
@joetheboatguy5394 11 месяцев назад
Hi Kenneth Greene, thanks for watching, first I would do is disconnect the batteries if not already done. But if you say you have a short, I’m guessing you disconnected batteries already. I would take a multimeter and connected to the Positive wire that goes to the batterie (that is disconnected from batterie) and connected to the Negative wire that goes to the batterie (that is disconnected from batterie) and set the multimeter in continuity. If you do have a Short, you will hear your multimeter beep at this point. Now I would remove one fuse at a time until your multimeter stops beeping. That would be the circuit to redo or verify. If you remove one by one and multimeter doesn’t stop beeping, then remove all fuses. (BUT remember where all fuses go, take a picture if it helps) If you remove all fuses and multimeter still beeps, then your short is before the fuses. OR on equipment that is not fused which shouldn’t be done 😊 Let me know if this help. Let me know

Great explanation and break down! Any chance of seeing one for an inboard motor? Been looking all over south Florida and no mechanic wants to work on an inboard. . . . @@joetheboatguy5394 I stand corrected. When I said throttle, I was referring to the run/off (kill) switch. There is a solid purple cable and a purple-white cable coming out of run/off switch. Trying to figure out if that goes to the I of the 4-prong key ignition? Or to the Accessory prong.
@joetheboatguy5394

Hi Jose, on a 4 prong key switch you will have usually have 4 connections the battery, accessories, ignition and the start. For the Kill switch is usually separate on a on off switch.... this is what i found on google : "Purple wires usually go to an ignition switched positive lead (accessory) so it will illuminate the gauge only while the key is turned on" and for the the voilet/white should be for Trim "Trailer" switch.... i get my info here www.cpperformance.com/t-boat_wiring_colors.aspx: it's a good reference. your kill switch should be a Black/Yellow : Ignition stop Unless someone tampered with the wires.... i hope this helps :) let me know how it goes.

@@joetheboatguy5394 thanks for the response. I purchased a new MPC 4000 GenII series mechanical panel control which has original wiring out of the Run/Off switch with the purple and purple/white wires. The manual says to plug the solid purple to the key ignition. . And the purple white to 12 volts (done). . . Question is, which post on the key ignition would I connect the solid purple white to?
@joetheboatguy5394
@joetheboatguy5394 2 года назад
@jose_with_the_ss what i see from the wire diagram in the manual. I see the Purple/White goes to kill switch and the Purple should go to prong written (+bat) connection on the key switch. So Purple/white will not go to the key switch only purple should.

@joetheboatguy5394
@joetheboatguy5394 7 месяцев назад
Hi flipper, Thanks for watching. If it’s a new boat, then it should be under warranty, I would just let them fix it. If all your gauge have lights, I would not see why the water pression wouldn’t have one. Sometime it's just behind the gauge the light bulb is in a socket that just needs to be turned or your light might be burned. But since your boat is new, let the dealer fix it just for warranty purposes.

Hi Horace Lee, thank you for watching and comments. On the tachometer RPM gauge. You usually have three wires one for power (purple or red), the other for ground (black) and the third one is usually (gray), it comes from the sender of the engine. Now since your tachometer goes on, your gray wire might be the problem. Make sure there’s no cuts on your wire and make sure your sender is functional. Your problem seems to be on the gray wire, the sender or the tachometer it’s self. You have 3 things to check 👍. Let me know if this helps and good luck 🙂 Do you see the arrow move at all? From a technical viewpoint, no reason to unplug the motor when charging. As long as the charger does not experience an issue, or the battery experience an issue there will be no problems. That is my opinion but if your not sure you will need to do more research 🧐. Every trolling motor have their specification. If i were you, I would contact Terrova to confirm…. 👍

@joetheboatguy5394
@joetheboatguy5394 Год назад
Hi Popop, let me know if I’m forgetting anything. For the bow light (always led) should be less then 1 amp draw. Regular (led) Anchor light also less then 1 amp draw. Your 800 gpm should be max 3 amps. Regular radio, should be max 3 amps and a fish finder max 1 amp. So your max draw if everything is on at the same time should be about 9 amps total. I’m calculating like if your wire from battery to fuse box is 6 feet. If you look in the chart 6 ft cable max 9amp draw you are fine with 14awg wire. But to be safe and in case you want to add more equipment might as well put a 12awg cable 👍. Now this is what I would do and this is with the information I have received. It would be a lot easier if I would see your set up of course 🙂. Let us know how your project goes. Good luck

Btw if it’s a faulty alternator be careful it can cause damage to your wiring and accessories. To know if it’s a faulty alternator, put a voltmeter to your batteries terminals and when you start your engine make sure you have at least 12.8V after you start your engine. I’m restoring a 2000 model skeeter zx 195c bass boat with all new gauges and sierra rotoswitches. Problem is I cut out all the old before researching the wiring schematic availability which is zero. I can’t find anything. Now I’m trying to figure out how in the world to hook all this back up blind. I’ve always been able to use a schematic. Stupid me I know. Lesson learned the hard way. Any suggestions on diagrams for these style switches and of course the gauges. Running Fuel,tilt/trim,rpm,mph,voltage,and water pressure gaugs.

Hi shawn springstun, Thanks for watching and comments, I usually do the basic so it's easy to understand, then you can add whatever equipment you need on "Always on fuse box" or "Ignition fuse box". I do have a video on how to connect a radio: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ih4kXGI4zzc.html see if this helps. I was asked to remove some of my videos because i`m revealing information they don`t want me to reveal. :( I did't remove anything. So, I show basic and then you just have to add the pieces you need all together. Thanks

Why is the boat's engine wired directly to the battery and not to the fuse box powered by the ignition switch? Seems like it would make sense to have the engine powered by the switch than directly wired to the battery.

Hello Joe, my speedometer needle is not working, and I noticed when I advanced the throttle, it is the needle of the fuel gauge that is moving towards "F", instead of the speedometer needle.what is wrong with the wiring? Thank you!
@joetheboatguy5394
@joetheboatguy5394 2 года назад
Hi John, I have a few questions, is your fuel sensor at the end of the tank? Meaning if you accelerate more gas goes at the end of the tank so your needle might will go higher. If that’s not the case I suspect a bad ground wire. For the speedometer, is it a GPS speedometer? Make sure your gps device it not covered. Need to be in a open area. If your boat is on salt water your wires have more of a chance to corrode check all gourd especially if your grounded to hull. Sorry it’s hard to guess, I don’t know your setup. But I would start with checking for corroded wires or bad grounds. Give more info I will try to help. Thanks for watching. Hope what I said helps 👍

Hi Roy Wallen, What charger do you have? Do you have a smart charger? Also if you plug it like the video I sent you and your battery switch is set to off-----> that should not affect your regulator. Also very important; your battery switch needs to be a Make-Before-Break switch or you can damage the alternator or regulator of your outboard when switching. Also you shoud never turn your battery switch on the OFF position when engine is on....

@kennethbjorkman2976 2 года назад
I am sure that if you put a fuse in your fuseboxes , fuses are all blown. You need to have a negative eart-busbar to connect all negative lines. And someone asked about using boathull as negative line, as in cars. That's not a good idea, it causes corrosion in the hull.
@joetheboatguy5394

Hey Kenneth, thanks for watching and comment. I have it wired like that and no fuses are blowing. Yes, I told the other guy that some people connect ground to hull but I don’t recommend it. 👍 you are right it will corrode with time.

If it's original wire I would not worry to much about it being to small they would never put a smaller gauge wire than necessary, they would be blameable for that kind of mistake and would recall to repair. Unless you are making some modification then I would be careful. That wire might be going to a relay that activate when power is given to it. Then the relay would make the higher amperage pass. That wire might just be the activation wire which doesn't take much amperage. Now don't forget i don't see the boat and wiring I'm going with what I would think it is.
