Boat Life! Being FRUSTRATED in Beautiful places! [EP 98]

In this weeks episode we go through a VERY wide range of emotions! We flip flop between extreme frustration and extreme cheer and relief. Well at least Khiara was relieved... In a nutshell, we have put days and days of blood sweat and tears into getting the drive train perfect and in our first decent test run having just perfected the alignment and installed the Bruntons Sigma Drive we hear an odd knocking noise... We quickly dive on the propeller to discover that all of a sudden the Cutless bearing has developed some movement, seemingly overnight. Adams initial reaction is to fix the problem and hence we booked a haul-out... though after working over the problems and running it over and over with a few of the neighbors he was convinced that it is not a problem worthy of the $500 USD haul out fee and that further investigation (read Sailing) is required. Much to Khiaras delight the haul-out is postponed and we agreed to see if we can carry a less than perfect Cutless bearing through to our next scheduled haulout.
Oh and the new anchorage was pretty great too!

You don't have to paint your prop, but you can grease it with vaseline or special prop-vaseline, which makes sure nothing can grow on it. It does wash away over time, but at least with us, it holds 9 months no problem and after haul out, its still clean. We do the same with transducers and seacocks. I am still binge watching, for the last 5 weeks every episode. If you cant tell, I love your episodes and cant wait to get back on the boat in 3 weeks

Adam, you're too hard on yourself. It's impossible to have absolute control over everything happening in the boat. No one, no one, no one could have forseen the alignment affecting the cutless bearing. This is just one of the thousand things happening on a boat... I know it's frustrating, I know. Welcome to the club... Anyhow, good that you come to the conclusion to wait and see. Thanks so much for sharing your line of thoughts, the experience and paradise with us. You TWO take care now, Carlos

You can put a bag over the prop if anchored / moored in the same location for a while. I haven't tried it but it was suggested by the late Patrick Childress, Brick House, as one of the way he kept his prop clean.

That sounds like a pretty good idea. Plastic bag and a zip tie. What I don't understand is whether the aquatic life that grows would already be present in the bag when you sealed it. Seems like a plastic bag would not offer much resistance to the prop if you did need it in an emergency. Awful about Patrick Childress.

I don't mean to give advice you don't really need, but... My brother had an aluminum boat building company for 30 years- he impressed on me to change the zincs earlier rather than later! Even tho a zinc looks serviceable or partially consumed, change it! The electrolytic damage may not be seen by the eye, and the zincs do protect critical parts. Buy spares and don't wait a year to change them! The integrity of that prop is very important and zincs are cheaper than a tow/prop replacement, etc!

If you do to cutless bearing . Pull the shaft and throw it into some vee blocks to recheck for straightness. Also check your earths and electrical leakage , that could be fizzing away your anode.

Yuuup. 1) Just reading on Wiki, "When you replace a drive shaft on your boat, it is also a good idea to replace the cutlass bearing where the drive shaft exits the boat." 2) The seeds @16:37 is most probably Terminalia catappa seeds, also known as sea or beach almonds. They tast somewhat as real almonds when ripe (though acidic), leaves are slightly medicinal, but mostly cultivated as an ornamental and shade tree.

Painting is a good idea. When cleaning the hull you migt want to invest in a diver's cap. The head covering when diving. Some of the little critters tend to migrate towards your hair and ears. Ear infection is a bother.

As a painter who’s starting to learn about sailing, I was surprised to see that you guys put the boat in the water so soon after recoating a few episodes back instead of letting it cure for a couple weeks. Curing is the most important part of the process in addition to product choice and often times allowing to cure in the most extreme of temperature like peak summer allows the paint to easily withstand at least those conditions.

boat maintenance, it happens when you schedule it. The prop and bottom, brush scrape and maintain. Harbors are just that, they harbor waterbourne microorganisms. Sail fast or motor, clean the bottom, when at anchor, clean more often. Lists help, as you age, it will be invaluable. Cheers mates, No drama's

Great time surfing your episodes. Adam, your geekiness is more than made up for by Khiara's good looks and amazing disposition. Lucky man! Don't let the mechanical/electrical snafus get you down. You're learning your boat. Nice job sorting out those shaft issues. You'll get ahead of the problems eventually. You're doing it right. Boat is good, but old enough that it's normal for things to need re-fit level attention. Go over everything, stem to stern, in anticipation of problems. Like you're doing. If it ain't broke don't fix it, but if it needs maintenance/overhaul do it before it craps out. Probably stuff and systems you can toss. Simplify! Good that you're on the boat so you can work on it everyday, but don't work on it all the time! Sail the darn thing! I came upon your videos after seeing the interviews you did with John Kretchmer (which were terrific). Liked what he said about the first thing he thinks when something breaks is 'how can i get along without this?'

I sewed a bag to place over the prop after use. It has magnetic strips to keep it closed but Velcro would also work but not as well for remote removal. Keeping the water nutrients away from the prop stopped all barnacles. It has a grommet and line attached led up to deck. I tie it off to wheel so I can pull it and remove bag (remote removal) from on deck if I need to start the engine quickly
@GrampalettasCamp

Use a very tough material because barnacles will grow and cover the bag. Nylon for example and scrubbing will get them off

Sir, you are correct that when you changed alignment on your shaft it took tention off your prop axel and the Grove that wore into your cutlass bearing started to let your prop flop so to speak. If you are going to take your boat out of the water to change your bearing may I suggest to check the level of your motor on your boat. Take a small ruler and check the heigth of your to your motor too the motor mounts and make sure that they are all equal heigths. You should have adjustment nuts on the shafts to your motor mounts. Try to keep them as short as possible, but not to short. It will cut down on vibrations from your motor. Myself I would find the shortest one as in motor mounts and adjust the other mounts to that height and recheck your out-put shaft alignment to make sure that you didn't through it out of alignment. Than put in your cutlass bearing and you should have no more problems.

A video I enjoyed immensely, Adam you are not going to pick up every problem first time every time, I think you have been great at what you do. I was going over some previous comments, how Adam is so lucky to be with Khiara, and I agree, but why, because Khiara found the man that fulfills her life in the same way. I fully believe Adam and Khiara complement each other in so many ways, I'm sure that they have disagreements that we don't see which is to be expected. I still love to watch their interactions as they go about life. Hope that you get to really get out sailing soon, and looking forward to seeing the updates. Take care and stay as safe as possible.

Nice video, I ran my sailboat with abt 2 mm play with the cutless for 2 years before changing the cutless, to have some play is not super critical and will not cause any damage as long as the driveshaft-engine is aligned. Fact that you have a flex coupling also gives you more reliability. Your prop noise, it is just that, a prop noise, and you probably get used to it, every prop has its unique sound signature.. You are ok Adam, soon you will know your Boat real good and you will graduate from an apprentice to a Master ! cheers P&F

I don't have time for this means it does not rate very high on your list of priorities ... high priority, you do what ever it takes to make time .... it is all choices pure and simple .. .... love how the two of you are such a team ... had to laugh at the "are you happy little miss bean counter" and the happy dance of joy that followed with that huge smile ..... thx for sharing a peek into your lives ..... as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .... have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

Sometimes, after having so many things going sideways for a considerable length of time.....a brain tends to start looking for problems where there probably isn’t one. I drive 100,000+ miles a year and Ive been there, where everything is wrong or going to break or some such silliness. All of a sudden I’ll hear something or think I feel something. It gets to me sometimes. I really try and just trust my repairs and inspections. Remember what Captain Ron says....”if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen out there, Boss”. Enjoy your times and trust that when stupid stuff breaks, you’ll be able to handle it.

Guys, i understand the trouble with the cutless bearing... on the other hand: you are not in a russ - not like someone taking two weeks holiday from job to sail. Take your engine as if you had an electric drive - and use only at anchoring. This way the cutless bearing does not matter - and you can focus on your important things. Take advantage what you have: time. Very best regards.

@smiling millenial falcon realigning an engine aboard a shaft drive does mean You gotta rebuild the shaft drive (cutlass/stuffing box/dripless/thrust bearing alignment) because the wear already happened does accelerate the "new" resp. "other" wear starting anew considerably. Bummer not having done it in the first place, but You realigned Your engine just round the corner lying at anchor .... not the situation to realign/renew cutlass and the rest anyway.

Goodness me! Genuinely surprised/shocked at approx 2 mins plus for Khiara's piece to camera - she looks very 1950's glamorous! (Think Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly). T'aint right, t'aint what we expect, t'aint normal (for a sailor). Ditto through to 5 mins. I have been a bit snotty about people commenting about/watching because Khiara is in a bikini or wetsuit; so tacky - and yet here I am saying how much I admire her! And I thought I watched this for sailing, travel etc. Hey, Adam (Bill to your friends) - you look great, too, especially that moustache of yours. It should have it's own RU-vid channel.

Why do you try to alight the output shaft from the engine and the hole in the hull? And maintain a waterproof seal. I think this is rather difficult. Why not install a flexible connector or a universal joint so that the two shafts don't need to be co-linear? The seal in the hull would not be compromised.

That's a very good point. The cutlass bearing is rubber. If the engine and shaft are aligned and made of harder stuff, then the rubber will wear to a new path. In times this noise should settle down.

Gee that one second clip of the very hot girl in the white swimsuit was nice . I wonder who she is . I think short of your boat being at the point of sinking or catching fire you should have at least three things that need doing before you haul out.

I think you should listen to that guy. I think your being way to picky its a boat and your motoring it will have noises. And its a sail boat after all so you just need it as a backup and its not like that problem will stop you from being able to use it.

How much sex is had on boats, and is noise abatement an issue on moorings? What about movement space?
