BOAT LIFE in the BAHAMAS - SAILING, DIVING + Exploring the Central Abacos | Harbors Unknown Ep. 61
This week we’re sailing further south into the central stretch of the Abacos in the Bahamas, still in search of a SIM card for internet, cute Bahamian towns and beautiful reefs for admiring and hunting for fish. To avoid shallow shifting sands and shoaling in the Sea of Abaco we have to traverse the notorious Whale Cay Cut, known for swells and Abaco rage sea conditions, if the trip isn’t timed properly. We decide to go for it even though we have winds up to 20 knots from the northeast…conditions reported to cause the Abaco rage.
Thanks so much to Erik from www.notesfromtheroad.com/ for the illustrated Abacos map. Be sure to check out his super interesting travel site, especially the section on the West Indies www.notesfromtheroad.com/westindies/

If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin and Fabio Potenti, and our French Bulldog dog Yoda. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our Seawind 1600 catamaran, Wanderlust, in September, 2020. We're sailing her to Harbors Unknown, to explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We're sharing our adventures as a sailing couple living on a boat and how it’s possible to live an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world, exploring the beautiful waters of South Florida, the Florida Keys, Bahamas, and the US East Coast. Subscribe now to join our sailing adventure.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt comment! We can’t imagine what it was like to go through Hurricane Dorian and it’s aftermath. You should be very proud to be an Abaconian. ❤️ We hope people recognize what a special place it is.

I did see you posing with your hammer real funny. I am super glad you got out of the marina. Enjoy your time in the Bahamas if you ever make it to Missouri in the summer its super fun at the Lake of Ozarks my boat isn't as big as your's but 26'tritoon will go just about anywhere. Sorry not hammer a mallet. Ha

Narrow cuts with big winds, reefs, and shallows? Get used to the Bahamas guys! I remember the Bahamas being all about avoiding those cold fronts on arrival. Sounds like you always exercise good judgment. Keep having a good time.

Such nice weather and location to explore! Some people have all the fun. It’s a shame that there are so few fish about. Overfishing possibly? Oh well keep moving and try your luck elsewhere. The 1600 looks good in the water, regardless of seastate. I’m envious!
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 2 года назад
It is a beautiful place but the reefs and fish population is in a pretty sad state. I think it’s development runoff and over fishing combine with climate change. But who really knows. 🤷🏼‍♀️ We’re admiring what’s left!
@gbsailing9436
@gbsailing9436 2 года назад
@@HarborsUnknown As a geologist, I can tell you it is not climate change. Climate change take 1000’s of years, and we may actually now be heading towards a new ice age. So don’t let people fool you. The Earth has a number of self regulating systems that counter warming of the globe. Think of it this way, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia has a water temperature of av. 28ºC. Yet in the Maldives, Indonesia etc. their water temperature is over 30ºC have they the coral bleaching there? NO. And the fish survive. So it is not water temperature that is the problem. Over fishing, increased nutrients -in the form of Phosphates-etc. and run off are the most likely culprits. We are experiencing a number of similar issues here in Australia at Gladstone.
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 2 года назад
I didn’t realize there’s not coral bleaching in the Maldives. That’s interesting. In the next video we dive the reef off Great Guana Cay where there was a lot of controversy about a big golf club development. I’m sure you can see where this is going…
@gbsailing9436
@gbsailing9436 2 года назад
@@HarborsUnknown ‘Human Climate Change’ is a cause being promoted mainly by the UN so that they can get countries all over the world to sign up to redistribute wealth to the poorer 3rd world nations. Natural climate change has been happening for millions of years of course. Australia has been asked to contribute 100Billion in its efforts to “COMBAT” this climate change. 100 Billion !!! And guess who gets their hands on it first? That’s right…The UN! They are the ones who are to distribute the money. No doubt after they give themselves all a pay rise. It’s a rort. What the media do not and will not tell you is how the earth’s oceans form part of a huge regulating Heat and CO2 sink. But there are scientific studies and articles that explain the mechanism, none of which is reported to the public. I knowI’ve read them! Don’t believe everything the MSM tells you. Do your own research. We have a Dr. (PhD) professor at the world’s 2nd best ocean research facility here in QLD Australia who got sacked because he DARED to question how research was being conducted by new students at the university. He’d been the head of the facility for over 40-years. What he doesn’t know about coral beaching and the GBR is not worth putting on the back of a postage stamp. But he dared to question how students were being taught to research and write their findings. Go figure.

Thanks so much for your well informed perspective on this very sensitive topic. It's great to hear different commentary rather than what the media reports or doesn't report.

Snorkeling…. is the rookie mistake you mentioned only for filming, or should you not have mouthpiece in while diving down? Thanks for the video, it’s great to be able to share some of your experiences on that lovely boat. Bold move doing the northeast wind through cut…. obviously your experience and confidence with the vessel is high enough nowadays to really know your capabilities. Encouraging to see that growth in seamanship happens with experience…. gives me hope for when we finally get out there. :)
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 2 года назад
When people free dive they typically take the snorkel out of their mouth so when you surface you just breathe in, instead of having to blow water out of the snorkel. You want to reserve as much air as possible for staying down longer. For Whale Cut we observed the sea state and overall conditions and figured it would be fine. The only real gamble is running aground so we stuck right on the track on the chart. Experience teaches you so much! You’ll get there. 😊 Thanks so much for watching!
