It must be just wild to have traffic under you, over you, beside you, just every where and you are in your boat. It is "wild" to watch! I am really enjoying this series....
@@sailingrubyrose All I have to say is a BIG BRAVO to both of you! I really enjoyed your video. It reminded me the trip I did with my boat in our TrentSevern Waterway in Ontario, Canada. If you are planning to come to Canada, don't miss this one. Btw, is your boat a Southerly Yachts Sailboat?
Have to say, "thanks Nick for continuing to pick up Terysa! Channel wouldn't be the same without her" - the meetup in Annapolis wouldn't have been as fun either!
You must be terrified of damage to your boat, especially when you’re sharing locks. Regular canal boats are made to take a bit of a battering so I suspect not everyone is as careful as you! Great series 👍
I just drove my sister to Chicago O'Hare Airport yesterday and a jumbo jet was going over the bridge as we drove under. I've seen it dozens of times but it never fails to freak me out.
Great video you two! Terysa has come through where a passerelle would not even have helped. What an athlete she is climbing on and off the boat many times. The lock system is amazing to see. I traveled all through Italy, and France in the 1970’s on land not even knowing about the lock system. Thanks for bringing it all to light.
Like Nick, I was waiting with bated breath for the aqueduct across the motorway! I can't claim to have boated over a motorway, but in terms of awesomeness, crossing the Farraka Barrage over the Ganges in India on the Darjeeling Mail train never fails to wow me. It's like crossing an inland sea :)
You have inspired us to rent a hire boat in the Canal Du Midi for our 30th wedding anniversary next year. We will be one of the "Student Drivers" in a Locaboat. Sail on!
Nick looked like he was ready to extract a couple of molars from the barge skipper without administering lidocaine and stitching things up after the act.
nick, get a folding step stool from whatever the big box equivalent is over there. the kind you use in kitchens with two steps. lock the folder in place so it doesnt fold and hang it over the bow against that fender step you made. voila - portable steps for teresa!!! hand it off to the next boat when you get to the end.
We just love following you too the boat isso nice, cant wait for the cat. Now one small critizim..... that moustache.....maybe its a shadow.....dont do it.... lol love ya both. Hugs from Canada
Amazing! They knew where the highway would be in 1683!! Building that aqueduct over the blank spot in the country side must have seemed so wasteful!! [Just in case: /s]
That would be my luck..driving down a freeway minding my own business & a bloody yacht falls on me? Bit of Aussie humour there. Loving this series guys. Best Wishes Aussie Mick
You guys are so calm going through the locks now, quite the change from the first few vids where the stress levels were through the roof. BTW, love your boat reviews, best information out there.
@@sailingrubyrose ah not just easier, I'm sure that it completely changes the experience to be able to enjoy these countries on that level. It'd be like seeing in colour vs black and white. Hearing conversations, interacting with the locals on a much better level etc. I'm jealous
Tony & Susan here, Nick your french is vary good. The tunnels and bridge pass thru's seam vary tight, Defiantly sounds like a city , Almost time to head to the Abaco's , if there is one or two places left from the hurricane.
Another well edited episode, thanks for taking us along on the adventure. Do like to see planes or ships sailing over roads, T is right though, the road way through the airport in Gibraltar is unique.
I’m so enjoying watching the two of you on this loching adventure. I love how y’all take everything in stride!!! I’m curious, how is the water? Is it brackish?
Félicitations Nick, tu parles bien français. C'est toujours pratique de parler une autre langue. I was told one could ship the mast by truck at the other end of the canal system. Have you checked this out and how much was it to do so? Thanks, Cheers and Bon Voyage, Richard
@Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose >>> HOW to get back on the boat, post-lock? Uh, _POLE VAULTING?_ 😝😝😝 On a SERIOUS NOTE, could you use a _stand up paddleboard?_
Were there places to fuel along the canal route to fuel? Did you have to walk into a town for fuel, or do you just have exceptionally large diesel tanks? As always, love the videos!!
Absolutely essential kit is a very fat round fender for the bows. It'll help keep the mast-head off the wall. By the way when you leave the canal du midi at Toulouse don't you go into the canal lateral a la Garonne?
I don't think I would attempt the French canal after watching these videos. The French canal seams much more stressful and complex than the Erie canal.
The South runway for Fort Lauderdale Airport goes over US1 and a train track. It also goes up hill to slow the jets down some. Amazing feat of engineering.
@@sailingrubyrose Oh, dont get me wrong, i`m not sorry I did, because I subscribe to many sailing channels anyway. I`m an ex US Marine and I had to spend a lot of time on US Navy war ships and carriers, so I do have my "sea legs" now, although it did take a while.( translate that to mean a lot of vomiting in the head). I love your sailing style and format and the stress of navigating those narrow channels. I live in Southern California , on the coast, but I have not taken advantage of that and gotten a boat yet. Look me up folks if you`re ever in CA. and i`ll buy you a pint.
A classmate of mine is a lock operator on the Mississippi River for the Army Corps of Engineers. Definitely going to be dropping the French title for that job on him from now on. Thanks for teaching me something useful this week!
Hey guys, I saw a reply from you on a video with a fake/funny AF news update about the SLV and GT trip thing. Typical aussie piss take humor on it, really enjoyed it. I cant find the Channel again now or the video so I'm afraid its been taken down. Is there any chance you know what it was, the channel?? Hard to find good Aussie humor online and when its mixed in with sailing stuff its golden, no idea why I didn't sub on the spot. Hoping you can direct me in the right direction. On another note, I love the French canals series however it was something my father was planning to do with my mum and various extended family members in retirement before he passed away so its mixed feelings being pretty awesome seeing it as well as sad that he isn't around to do it now or just to see it through your videos. So thankyou, you have convinced me that I will have to go get it done for him now.
Hey mate, it was on Sailing Nandjis RU-vid channel. They took the video down as they were getting a lot of grief over Mentioning SLV. Don’t blame them at all. Either way, the video is gone
@@sailingrubyrose Yea, people will be people, it's sad people having a go at each other over trivial stuff, IE: SLV making content and the people making content off their content, its at both ends when you think about it. End of the day, you gotta recognize as they pointed out that SLV is more a business nowadays, I dont think they were unfair I think they stayed fairly neutral so no need to have a go at them for it, it was entertaining..... Nothing against SLV, someone lines up a deal where you are the walking advertisement for a company offering you a 1 mill US boat and all you gotta do is make repayments and keep making videos and any/everyone would take that deal. It's pretty straight forward works both ways for the SLV crew, they get a shinny catamaran that enables them to grow their "brand" and make lots of money while flogging that brand and continuing their adventure. That brand gets a walking advertisement that pops up near the top when people search youtube and glorifies the lifestyle, getting them more sales lol. People that knock them for what they have done gotta think, what would I do, answer is sign on the dotted line and roll with the punches lol. Same time though, SL fancrew gotta recognize that they are no longer what they were when they first set out. They are earning over 10k USD a week from patreon for making a 12-15 minute video per week and to do that they need to stay close to their demographic between the US and the EU where people have disposable cash to throw at the dream they are portraying. That is without youtube add revenue. If it wasn't for that keeping them tied up to a location and a format that brings in that income for them then with a 6 month old kid its hard as all fk to get back to what they were originally, a kid ties them up even more to locations with access to healthcare etc. Either way, SLV is no longer what they started out as. People gotta recognise that and not flame others when they highlight that while making their own content, especially content that has a surf report and invites you to have a frothy. All class when your closer is telling people to have a drink.
You are in France. The lock will be opened once the eclusier has finished his wine and baguette you 'seelee toooriste' ('silly tourist' in a French accent)
So you weren't able to stop even for a moment to see any of Toulouse? Seems sad, I'd want to just step off for an hour. You were on a tight schedule? Blessings! Q
@@sailingrubyrose I've been watching Cruising the Cut with David Johns & The Narrowboat Experience w/ Annamarie & Kath on youtube, both English canal boat vlogs, so since seeing you both go thru the French canals I've wanted to see all those sites, too. I'm too greedy! LOL Hope you had fun here in the states on your short jaunt. Peace. Q
