In this video we're replacing a steering cable on a Teleflex Quick Connect (QC) style helm. These are very common on all types of boats and with these quick steps you can swap out an old cable or install a longer/shorter cable if you're modifying the layout of your console.
Our boat wiring connector kits are now available here:

My steering was stuck near the motor. Took both sides apart, sprayed with Blaster, went back and forth, cleaned the rods and added fresh marine grease now works great.

That'll typically work as a short term fix. My experience has been that once moisture is in there it will eventually seize up again if it sits long enough.

Good morning Tom Question What’s your thoughts on a hydraulic steering system for pontoons?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 2 месяца назад
Hydraulic steering is the BEST option on any boat including pontoons. They’ll still steer flat, but steering will be much less effort across all speeds. The issue is most smaller hp motors don’t need it, and the price is often $1500-$2000 installed. There are some aftermarket off brand options available on Amazon, but I’m not willing to try a cheap option on something like steering so I stick with SeaStar systems!!

Hi Tom. My steering cable is very squeaky. Is there something I can spray or put on the cable to stop it from being squeaky?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 4 месяца назад
It’s likely not the cable, but instead the rotary helm itself under the console. You could pull your cable and grease the end and add some grease in the spigot. See if that helps.
@adaminjp
@adaminjp 4 месяца назад
@@tomspontoons I’ll try that thanks Tom. Any specific kind of grease you use?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 4 месяца назад
@@adaminjp I believe it's usually white lithium that gets all over me when I'm working with steering cables under the helm 🤣 Otherwise a marine grease would work, but I avoid using any red (ceramic based) greases on anything other than my trailer.

My boat has this system but with two cables because it used to have a much larger motor. Current motor only uses one is it okay to remove the second?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Месяц назад
I've never dealt with that scenario before on a pontoon boat. They were common on bass boats and speed boats with bigger HP. I would probably replace the whole helm system with a new rotary single cable to be safe.

Greetings Tom, What are some indications that it is time to replace the steering cable? Can you give your opinion on using those motor end steering cable grease fitting nuts?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Год назад
Usually they last 20+ years just fine, but if they get water in the cable they can start to corrode and steering will become increasingly difficult. Greasing the steering tube on the motor should be regular maintenance, but I haven't personally seen that cause major issues with tightening steering. A lot of times we can swap the cable and helm and things get a lot easier. Restoring pontoons leads to a lot of increased length of steering cable needed which is why I'm usually swapping them. More modern layouts tend to have the console pushed forward a few feet.
@awakenedtotruth8419
@awakenedtotruth8419 Год назад
I figured as much. I've been drawing out center console configurations, and I anticipate 3 additional feet will be needed. As a young lad, I've seen dry spots in a steering cable at the motor end from a winter sitting. Crazy thing was that it developed while we were on the river. A couple of guys grabbed the outboard and rocked it until it bust through the dry spot, and we made it to shore safely. It had good movement afterwards, but we played it safe and lubed it once we got back. It remained good for years until the boat was sold. Luckily, we were crewed up for that outing.

@@awakenedtotruth8419 Yep, once that outer sheathing starts to crack and weather it's only a matter of time before water gets in and seizes things up!

@tomspontoons like you stated about replacing, it's fabulous that this part is more affordable today than of old times. The steering is such a critical safety part of boating. Why not swap and be good for 20+?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Год назад
@@awakenedtotruth8419 Exactly. As a CRITICAL part of the boat's operating system. A new cable is around $150+/-....well worth the investment!

My steering wheels moves freely to both side what could it be?.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 9 дней назад
It’s pretty common to have some play side to side (a few degrees anyway) with a rotary system. Excessively play could be a worn out system.
@ernestl709
@ernestl709 9 дней назад
@@tomspontoons so I’d have the replace the rotary steering helm.? Correct?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 9 дней назад
@@ernestl709 Probably best bet to replace the helm and cable. Usually a whole new kit is $250 or so, but should last you another 20+ years.
