Love the idea of the triangle boom traveller alternative. I've seen lots of cockpit travellers that break up the cockpit space and always thought it was a dumb idea, well done. Great honest videos.
@SailingLearningByDoing

Cheers Norman. Bavaria's get round the issue but putting their mainsheet and traveler in front of the bimini but I really dont like that system as then they are attached halfway down the boom and if you crash gybe your boom will snap like a twig. I had nothing to compare it too but my system seemed super logical and I'm super happy with how it works. Thanks for watching.

@@SailingLearningByDoing a few of the older, and smaller boats in the day used a similar, but simpler system...double blocks on the boom, and a block on each side, with only one control side rope to center or let out the boom.

Hey bro Been living on my twenty eight footer in melbourne for two years, planning on upgrading in a couple of years then circumnavigate Australia setting up community projects. The reason l am writing this is, l am a forty seven year old man who has found balance on a platform that rocks, metaphoricly and figuratively. It has given me great balance. I come from a fishing background in New Zealand and this is my first boat. I can't wait to cruise around the world living simply and happy. So l have subscribed and will endeavour to follow more of your journey. Kia kaha

What you are saying about the position of shrouds closer to the freeboard is one of the elements in yacht design that has most implications. It means headsails with little overlap so that the jib can keep a good angle. It means a mast position a little more forward, therefore a longer boom. It also means spreaders, so no dead downwind point of sail. And if there's no dead downwind POS, you'll need ability for the boat to plane to keep the VMG, and for that the boat needs to remain lightweight. And it all comes down to materials. Shrouds closer to the centerline is not a stupid design decision. It's a design that makes sense given the constraints of the time. As for mainsail material, you could have a look at radial HydraNet.
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 4 года назад
HI, yes obviously everything is a compromise of some sort and design ideas go in and out of favour. But from a strength point of view I would rather have as wide a triangle as possible. Having the shrouds enter the deck closer to the mast than the width of the spreaders seems pretty daft to me, but yeah if you have giant 150% jibs then thats what you have to have. DDW sailing is pretty uncomfortable and I try not to do it but with my big Assy I can still get a long pretty good

I totally agree with you on about everything you said. The people who clutter their decks seem to want to advertise the fact they are live aboard ocean cruisers. Anyone with experience knows it all gets in the way and likely to fall in the sea and pollute or be stolen and puts weight where it's not wanted. That looked like the ultimate anchorage.

What can i say but thank you Vernon , I have a small but sufficient kelt 850 and have already strengthened the shroud deck fixings internally as manufacture design on the mk1 was poor, I've come up with a plan to re build and re route to new fixings and allow for a better windward experience after watching this part 2. On top of that your main sheet is a cracking idea, giving you a preventer and space plus strength .. genius Vernon.

Hi Vernon, I truely love your boat, and It is such a pleasure to watch your videos and adventures, your tone of voice when explaining and telling the things here and newer videos are excellent. I came accross some things during this vid what actually not suits you, while explaining the things as 1 of many as the wheel that by others are preffered imagining that they sail a bigger boat was not needed. Many people cant afford a new custom boat and buying a second hand boat comes in most cases with a wheel, even if Schiehallion would come with a wheel you would have take it as well. My point here is that you provide a excellent explanation, the extra addition why others might have choosen something else is not needed, the same for the jars with gasolin, some has a to small boat to hide the jars. Its just my opinion and I know you saying it without any harm, however in my opinion leaving such comments behind suits you more as a person, with all respect and keep up the good work. Kind regards,
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 4 года назад
Thanks for watching and yeah you are right, I didn't mean any of it in a negative way. I think that many people, specially first time buyers just think that a "real" boat needs a wheel.

@@SailingLearningByDoing Hi Vernon, not need to thank me, I or we need to thank you, you doing such a great job and posting amazing videos, and indeed I can not disagree to the fact that the newbies think that a boat needs a wheel, therefor your explanation how convenient it is steering without a wheel is more then sufficient for the once thinking to buy there first real boat. It si a very interesting compromise to have a racing boat as a blue water cruiser. You have to be a bit spartan and minimal but the rewards are great. But this boat is special in that regard, hard wood core, water tight bulkheads, it is build like a tank and still light, allowing for speed and fun sailing. The huge security issue is that fin rudder, but you did very well to remedy that, you really shouldn't go offshore with out it. It suits you perfectly! Congratulations !! By the way...I sailed last year on a Outremer 55 catamaran which had been to Antartica...some cats do handle the big seas...Thanks Vernon. What an anchorage!!!!

Hi Vernon, for cruising, a heavish Dacron is cheaper and lasts longer than the racing sail materials. 3 reefing points and hand loops above each reefing eye. Rolly Tasker are ‘not far away’ in Thailand and would look after you. (Rolly built my first Sabot sail long ago in 1968).
@SailingLearningByDoing

Hey Vernon, just re-watched this after the comments on your latest vid. I like that system and I'm going to look into the feasibility of doing it on Moon Shadow. I'm also thinking of ditching the wheel - it takes up a massive amount of space in the cockpit. I use the "emergency" tiller for my windvane to reduce the number of lines running around the place.
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 4 года назад
haha yeah, there was a guy on some forum yesterday asking about installing a wheel and getting rid of the tiller on his 30ft boat and everyone was giving him the go-ahead. I told him not to do it. So much room room in the cockpit, such a better feeling steering while sailing, wy less complexity and things to go wrong.

Hey Vernon! I just binge watched all your sailing videos post the new boat, and I absolutely love your channel. I love the drone footage and underwater stuff, but I came here to learn about sailing, and was wondering if you could do an instructional video of sorts? You have some here and there throughout your series, and the quality of it is so good, and I've learned lots already! Keep up the good work brother!

Thanks Jim and good effort getting though all my videos. My channel is not a "how to sail" channel and never will be. Its called "Learning by Doing" for a reason. If I can inspire people to think about and act on their dreams then perfect. I also dont see myself as qualified to "teach" someone how to sail but I have no problem showing how I do it as I'm self taught.

Hey mate.... as far as ideas for saving money on your Mainsail replacement. I suggest determining your sail deminsions... P and E... can be measured with a tape if you don't have any records listing deminsions. Then search used sail inventories online. Racing boats go through many sails, selling them as used, with plenty of life left in them for cruising, but no longer competitive on the race course. You don't have to find another Sayer 37 Mainsail.... look through the listings by dimension and you might get lucky enough to find a sail off another model, like a Farr 38 etc whose deminsions are close enough, or close enough that it can be altered to fit your Sayer at minimal cost. If you're really lucky, some hugely popular competitive class boats Mainsail will work.... in that case there will be many acceptable sails to choose from.

Excellent TY! Much of your formula is spot on with my thinking. A lighter boat with spade n fin keel deep enough to be on the stiff side. A boat that points well has more options when shaping a course. Also very capable in light air common to SE Asia. Yours is very modern n sensible. Main sheet is interesting as is the advantages of a tiller. A hydrovane as an addition to a spade rudder, agreed. 320 solar and 450 battery topped of by noon, nice. Do you like the swept spreaders for down wind work? It is a shame there are not more deep bulb boats in the 35 - 45ft range.
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 4 года назад
Hi David, good comments. I feel pretty lucky to own this boat, as you rightly say, there are very few boats like this in the 35-40ft range. Obviously the swept spreaders are a slight disadvantage downwind but they more than are up for it in other areas. I'll either go wing-on-wing down wind or sail a bit higher with the A2, more comfortable and faster but a bit further distance.
@davidncw4613
@davidncw4613 4 года назад
@@SailingLearningByDoing I find your comments particularly useful because you have cruised a full keel boat and a decidedly sporty one. For several reasons I am leaning towards the sporty side of the formula as well. Schiehallion does a nice job of reaffirming my preference.

In relation to using your oven as a fariday cage. Put your phone in it and have someone call it, if it rings it is not suitable. The problem with the oven is the glass door and few ovens are grounded.
