As an older Shipwright I agree with everything you have said in this video. Too many times I have found rot in what would be perfectly fine structural boat bits, transom, stringers, floors and soles... If people didn't randomly attach stuff without sealing off the timber/ply! And I don't mean mastic/sika/goop! Post through holes, epoxi seal screw holes... Think, don't let the water in!

Thanks Carl! I've seen so many boats that didn't have to be.... Hopefully people learn!

Have you got any insight into modernizing older builds? I'm considering a resurrection project from the early '70's with twin gas inboard engines

All just depends on your skill level and amount of time and funds willing to put into the project. It will be more expensive overall than buying a newer boat in good condition that doesn't need work, as you need to physically cut out and disassemble the boat back to bare, then spend all the labour re-glassing etc. If the boat is particularly sought after or something rare, go for it. If you can buy the same boat, for more money, as new - I'd suggest that if you want to actually go boating....

Hi, i have this timber rot problem you speak of in my transom. I drilled multiple holes through so I could dry it out properly and used Wetrot to firm up the wood fibers. Its obviously not strong enough to put back in the water, so i have this idea to fix it that will save me replacing the thing ( which i wont do because its not worth it) Idea: to inject resin into the transom to fill all internal voids and bond all timber fiber so unit is hole again. Plan on using west systems 105 or 650 (leaning more towards 650) anyone have any thoughts, info, advice recommendations? thanks

Hey Jobs, Unfortunately it's all just going to be a band-aid fix. The resin won't bond correctly to the wet and rotten timber, and it will just have sections of dried up resin internally. Sorry to hear the bad news :-(
