Brought my dad's boat into small shipyard I worked at and we covered his hull with .010 thick copper that he bought. We took his boat to Mazatlan many times because his grandfather was from there. Good times, circa 70s-80s.

I enjoy your video series because they are educational. Part of what I was hoping to find on your channel was an explanation of what things cost. Maybe I've missed that if you've discussed it in the past but so far I have yet to hear one mention of what your smaller Nordhaven cost to operate, what you sold it for, what the new boat cost to purchase, insurance, routine maintenance, and now what did this rebuild of your driveshaft / cutlass bearing etc. cost. This information from a reliable source and not someone trying to sell me something would add GREATLY to your series educational value. I'm hoping you'll add this information to your videos otherwise they seem more braggadocios than informative. You're doing what many of us aspire to do and are in a unique position to help others like myself make a realistic leap of faith to doing the same. Thanks

One of the thru hull halogen lights had flooded and the manufacturer said they could have rebuilt it for $150. Problem was it was bedded with 3M 5200 and wouldn’t come out without a saw. I’m the end the new lights are way brighter and will last longer. Bonus is they have both blue and white color available.

Tony & Susan here, That really is a fantastic boat, we love to learn about service and repairs. As we are shopping for a 43. Was the work you had done on the shaft north of 10k with the haul out and clean up. No pressure to answer that question.
@CassidysSailingTrawler
@CassidysSailingTrawler 4 года назад
Not afraid to answer the question - your estimate of cost was almost spot on. Considering the amount of work they had to do to remove and service the running gear and the rudder and everything else that was done we thought it was a pretty good price. The boat yard workers at Baja Naval are really careful and did great work too.

Cassidy's Sailing Trawler I’ve done a bit of boat repair/maintenance myself over the last 3+ decades and I have to say that 10k ish is pretty darn fair. That video made it look quick and easy but it’s darn sure not, not even close to being either. The 100 mm bearing is crazy but with Nordhavn’s it was done for a reason. It’s unfortunate that the failure of a $20-30 nipple caused $1k’s in repairs but that’s life with boats and fast cars, been there done that.

Nice to see that the boat uses a standard stuffing box. Simple and safe. Are you using Gore GFO? It drips way less then normal packing material, requires less lubrication, and runs cooler. You can re-pack in the water if you leave the last existing ring in place.

No matter what you spend for a boat, they still need maintenance. You can afford a boat when you have someone else do all the work and you don't care what they charge you. @@CassidysSailingTrawler Do u know where in the world are yards experienced with servicing and repairing Nordhavns in general and N56 in specific? @CassidysSailingTrawler
@CassidysSailingTrawler 4 года назад
Because of the 18 foot long shaft, this boat has 2 cutlass bearings. We put the cutlass bearing that was wrapped in fiberglass in the aft position, just forward of the propeller. There is no chance of that one ever overheating because it is right at the area where the prop shaft exits the boat and constantly has good water flow. It was the cutlass bearing just aft of the stuffing box that is way inside the boat that overheated.

Are you sold on the Hundestad prop? It looks quite complex -- is the performance worth the extra cost of servicing it? The cut-out between the rudder and the hull looks just like what a wonderful naval architect named Ted Brewer used on many yachts like the Whitby 42 -- he called it the "Brewer Bite."
@CassidysSailingTrawler
@CassidysSailingTrawler 4 года назад
Answe is - not enough data. Dan Streech and the Leishman brothers at Nordhavn are sold on it. It’s expensive and complex yes. The number I heard is $75k to put it on the boat new. I love the idea of it. We shall see once we start using the boat with favorable winds.

@CassidysSailingTrawler
@CassidysSailingTrawler 4 года назад
The boat is not super difficult to run single handed. A lot of our trip through Central America I was alone on the boat. Expenses are more than on the 40 but so far not extremely so. There are things that come up though like needing to repair sails that add cost but no wing engine or stabilizers to maintain. We just finally sailed the boat in god conditions with no motor and it was great and we were up close to 8 knots with only 15 knots of wind.

We actually discussed what was needed as far as maintenance on the prop with the people at Hundested and we also looked thoroughly through the manual. They are surprisingly robust despite being seemingly complex. Every 50 hours we pump great through from inside the boat that makes it all the way down to the propellor hub. The only suggested maintenance when hauled is to actually pump fresh grease into the hub directly through the port at the propellor - which we did.

@CassidysSailingTrawler
@CassidysSailingTrawler 4 года назад
We didn't know that the cutlass bearing had been getting hot - we new the stuffing box had been hot at one point because of periodic checks with an infrared thermometer. The reason that we hauled the boat was that the stern tube that clamps onto the stuffing box was starting to deteriorate. The melted cutlass bearing was a surprise.
