The TOP Sailboats For Sale in Massachusetts for Under $25k!
Join our crew! We'd appreciate the support: / boatfoolssailing
Check out our BoatFools TOP 10 Sailboats For Sale in Massachusetts for under $25k and you could be out pursuing your sailing dreams before you know it. We think there is something on this list for everyone. Fellow BoatFool, co-owner of our Morgan 382, Canadian, and friend, Kenneth Chipman joins me at HQ for today's top 10. Canadian Ken actually owned a boat before Josh and I did - a Bristol 27, which he sold so he could join in on the Morgan fun. We each have picked our 5 favorites in MASS for under $25k, and we're going to rate the, score them, and hopefully come up with a consensus on a winner. It could get ugly. So, don't listen to all of the BS about spending a fortune in order to enjoy sailing. Sellers are getting anxious. Deals are in the offing! And if you live in Massachusetts, one of these boats might be ideal for you. Any one of these sailboats would be perfect for day sailing, some weekend overnights, and some could even take you just about anywhere you'd want to go. All of these boats are very cool!
Also, if you're enjoying our new intro song, check out my brother and sister-in-law's band, Rose Ganache at www.roseganache.com. They make some fantastic music and "Sailors" was made just for us - with a nod and thanks to Lorde's "Royals".
Here are the links to the listings. Please note that we have no financial interest in any of these boats. Just sharing the information! And please contact us if you have any questions about any of these boats - happy to share our thoughts:

William Lapworth was a very successful boat designer in the 1960’s. He designed the Cal 40, which at the time was a breakthrough boat in ocean racing,

Indeed he was. We have a Cal 39 coming up in our last episode for 2023. And I believe a Cal 40 won the last Newport-Bermuda race, surfing at times at 20 kts. Bananas! Thanks to watching and for your comment!

Another great episode!!! I scored a little differently ... I'd put the Endeavor 32 at number 3 (great lines, clean interior, comfortable boat), I'd put Morgan 34 at number 2 (beautiful shear line, nice layout below, solid performance numbers), and I would put the Bristol 35 at number 1 (great shear line, nice layout below, solid performance numbers). What put the Bristol 35 on top for me was the price -- it's 1/2 the price of the Bristol 39 that might have a moisture issue. I think that you should change the affordability category to "value for your dollar" -- where does the asking price stand both in relation to the rest of the boats on the list, but also in relation to the average price for identical boats on the market (JD Power average price for the model). I like these episodes -- keep them coming!

Great feedback. Thank you. Yes, I really like that Endeavor - looks clean and ready to go. The Bristol 35 was right there, and you’re right about the price - and such a classic. Ideas to ponder! Thanks!

Maybe you could do a version of this for the West Coast...? I'm in WA, but I would consider boats from CA, OR, WA, BC or AK. Love this series! My ideal boat would be a Nonsuch 30, 33 or 36. I'd love an Island Packet, but my budget doesn't go that high.
@boatfools
@boatfools 8 месяцев назад
We will definitely be doing some episodes for the west coast. We have ties out there in CA and WA. Thanks for watching and stay tuned. And I will keep an eye out for the boats you mentioned. There are two IP27s up here for sale in this budget range, but maybe a bit too small and too far but great boats!

These old boats with the long overhangs are ok day sailboats but not for cruising. They just don't have enough space below for the overall length plus the short waterline means they will be slow motoring

i am just becoming interested in the sailboat world, and one thing I've noticed is that people often say "she has nice lines" for any boat that looks better than a pending insurance claim. I know its a cliché but its still funny to me. it's like when you hook up a trailer for the first time on your new truck - this has never happened without the driver saying "I can't even feel it back there!"

I'm a lifelong fool on the powerboat side, but I'm new to sailing. I love the channel, and I'm learning a ton of great information. I'm wondering if you can shed any more light for me on the sailing calculation piece. I see the numbers, but what do they really mean? What do they tell us about a boat? I'd love to see more information or possibly a video. Thanks!
@boatfools
@boatfools 8 месяцев назад
Hi Eric - so, the best thing to do is go on to sailboatdata.com. Type in a boat you're interested in - say Morgan 34 - then scroll down to the Calculations section. Just above that section there is a Definitions link. Click on this and it will walk you through what everything means. It's very useful. Also, you can download a free version of the app on your phone (don't pay for it, unless you want the search functionality - the free version is easy enough to use by clicking on a letter of the alphabet to find a boat you're interested in) which has a link next to each calculation that defines it. The data is useful in general terms - not the final word. Let me know if you have any issues finding the information/definitions.

The Tartan 34C has been on the market for a long time, like I think 3 years. At one time it was listed for under $15,000.

@@boatfools not that I can tell from the listings photos. I recognized the boat by the Pegasus carving on the cabinet door. It was listed for awhile on Craigslist,and boattrader.

What are your thoughts on Out Islands?
@boatfools
@boatfools 7 месяцев назад
They were an astonishingly successful boat, particularly the 41 of which more than 1,000 were produced. Very popular in the charter biz. Easy to sail. Not a top performing boat but very comfortable. A lot depends on your intended use. If looking for a live aboard, or a comfortable boat for the islands, an OI would be a nice choice. If you’re looking for something a little fancier with good overall performance, probably not the boat for you. There are a good number out there for sale from time to time, so depending on where you live you might have options. And get a survey!

Do you guys do consulting? Need someone over there to help sort out shipping a boat to SE Asia, who can recieve money, buy it, send it off with all its paperwork. Obviously there is an accounting expense. And other expenses.Can give specifics if you are intersted in the job.

Call me pedantic, but "ceiling" is "overhead" in boats.
@boatfools
@boatfools 8 месяцев назад
Or deckhead or cabin headliner. Yes, ceilings are on the hull sides. I am aware. Taping a video is often rife with misspoken words in the moment. But you are correct and thanks for pointing it out.

These are all almost exactly the same boats , lots of overhangs an cut away forefoots ect.... modern boats are being built with fuller transoms and no overhangs to maximize space in marinas , there's alot to be said about an old Sam Crocker centerboard ketch or even an old full ended fishing boat like Slocum sailed around the world , looking at those boats with ten feet waterline less than their length just seems a 60's 70's 80's 90's yachting thing that maybe missed a few points from boats built to sail with hundreds of years building experience or the newbies learning their roots 🙂

What do you mean when you say (apparently) the engine runs well? Can you get the important facts so you don't have to say fake information.
@boatfools
@boatfools 5 месяцев назад
Hi Gerald, short of running the engine yourself or with a diesel mechanic on hand, there’s no way to know the actual condition of the engine. I am not “saying” fake information, I am presenting it as the seller has. And, as always, I recommend a marine survey when purchasing a boat.

Sea Worthiness, not Seamanship.
@boatfools
@boatfools 6 месяцев назад
Hello! What are you referring to, exactly? Our rating mechanism? If I stated seamanship, I am referring to the overall maintenance of the boat - how has she been taken care of? Is she ship-shape? These all fall under the broader definition of seamanship. BUT, I may has misspoken somewhere else in the video!
