This video shows our experience when we brought our sailboat across Lake Ontario to Niagara On The Lake. Due to Covid, marinas were not accepting transient boats. Every other city on Lake Ontario we just anchored out and dinghied to shore. We had never been to the Niagara area. We figured we could do the same and anchor somewhere and go to shore to explore wine country and maybe even bike to the city of Niagara and see Niagara Falls.
We learned that the current on the Niagara River is too strong to safely anchor and go to shore leaving your boat at the perils of the current. Hopefully, the summer of 2021 will be different and we will be able to get a slip so that we can come back and do some land exploring. Maybe even explore the American side of the river.
Hopefully, those thinking of boating to this area will find this video useful. If so show the channel some love by giving the video a thumbs up.
Safe Cruising!
Craig and Janice

At Smuggler’s Cove there is a road you could walk up ... or a set of stairs you can climb. Takes you right to the Niagara Parkway at East-West Line, where there are bicycle rentals available. Mind you during the Covid they may not have been opened. You could even walk to downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake from there. Not far at all.

Thanks. I am sure there is a ton to do in the area. We tried calling and emailing Smugglers Cove. No response. NOTL marina was a firm NO to us stopping there so we were pooched for going to shore and exploring. Hopefully next summer will be better.

Found you guys on a Facebook post and watched this video. Really Well Done! Just the kind of channel I'm looking for. Can't wait to go back and watch your past ones. We sail the great lakes also, Lake Michigan/Huron out of Beaver Island Michigan. Again, can't wait to catch up! Thanks for the upload! Nicholas

Hey Nicholas. If you ever venture toward Kingston Ontario, send us a message and we can meet up. You really need to check out the beautiful 1000 Islands area.

Definitely worth being a member of a yacht club to take advantage of the reciprocal privilege's at the NOTLSC and Smuggler's Cove Yacht Club. Niagara on the Lake is probably the nicest destination on the west end of Lake Ontario. It's worth spending a few days there. Also the Youngstown Yacht Club, which also has reciprocal agreements across the river on the US side is really nice. It's a really nice day trip to check out the American Fort Niagara on the mouth of the river. Hopefully the border will be open this summer.

Agreed. We need the border to be open so we can take advantage of the US side of Lake Ontario again. We miss that.

At Smugglers Cove, looks like the boats were pointing up river and towards shore, so the current must be backing along the shore. Most “clubs” do not allow non “club” boaters in at any fee. Although if you can reach someone it never hurts to ask. Also, there is an Anchorage just north or south of the morning field in about 15-20 feet. The current is not as strong and the holding is good, but you’ll want to be close to shore. You can tie your dinghy to the smugglers cove dock, which they don’t mind as long as you circle to the back side. Just be sure to ask permission from any member who can help you out. It’s a self-help club and they don’t have any staff. Everyone volunteers to keep the club running and the rules enforced.

OK. Thanks for that info. Hopefully next time we pass by that way we can get a slip at the marina.

Great stuff guys! Hope to see you down this way next summer. There’s a great anchorage and beech on the east side of the Welland Canal. Well protect from wind except from the north and north east. With bikes, you can make it to Niagara on the Like...a nice ride and workout.

Oh cool. So that would be a good option if we couldn't get a slip. Thanks.

Niceeee ! Brings back memory for me of yesteryear going to the Falls & fishing on Lake O. Jan.-Feb. coolest weather here now in Philippines & low 80's. Will take a couple small close trips very soon, one near Boracay. Enjoy life while u can & live for today especially during these crazy times......

Bonzo, you are killing me with that weather in the Philippines. If it wasn't for COVID I would say "Invite us to come visit!!" Today is not a bad day here in Ottawa. It is -12c with a high expected of a balmy -7c but with the windchill it will feel like -11c. Now I know no one is envious of my weather, but there it is. ;-)

I thought it would be interesting to ask what your realistic timeline is now for buying a catamaran? There are a lot of unknowns, but if things went “well”, would you have a window in mind?

I plan to retire in 3 years and we plan to go as soon as possible. We will start seriously looking at boats to buy in 2 years. You never know how long it will take to find the "perfect boat". We kind of hope there is a recession by then because we bought our present boat during the recession of 2008-2010 and the prices of used boats get super cheap. Now is not the time to be buying.

Yes. It would be nice to go back to normal by this summer's sailing season. We miss crossing over the the US side and touring around. Things are not looking promising unless everyone gets vaccinated and it the Virus dies off. Probably wishful thinking that that can happen by this summer.

Thanks Scott. We tried to have a "normal" summer of sailing. It was hard when no one would let us get a dock and most of the restaurants and shops were closed but we made the best of a bad situation. Hopefully next summer will be better ?? Oh who are we kidding! All signs point to COVID still being around. I miss doing stops along the US side of Lake Ontario. If for no other reason that to get some of that cheap rum. ha ha

Good job! Thanks for the intel. I've sailed out of Cleveland for years but never ventured out to much. I sail a 25' C&C ( a fine Canadian boat) and is a bit small to be caught in a blow. Never met a Canadian I didnt like!
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
Right on Tom. We are all lovely people. ha ha. A C&C is a nicely built boat. Shame it is no longer being built. 25' is big enough to go exploring. Just need to keep a keen eye on the weather forecast and only venture out to cross the big lakes when you know you have a relatively calm weather window. Map out places you could run to and anchor if the weather looks to possibly turn rough. Our boat is 35' but even we wouldn't want to be in the middle of Lake Ontario in a blow. It can get nasty! Unlike the Ocean where you get big but long waves, the great lakes just get steep chop which can feel like being in a washing machine. Not fun. We have been heading back to Kingston a few times and just caught a storm front and it can get very uncomfortable fast. We have never been in the middle of the Lake during it. If you do find yourself in that predicament you probably left port when you shouldn't have based on the forecast.
