In this 5th episode of the Exploring Lake Ontario Series, we leave Toronto and sail west to Oakville Ontario. We have never been to Oakville and we learn there are actually 2 harbours to go in and explore so we film them both. We are learning as we go so next time we do a circumnavigation of Lake Ontario we will know all the best places to stop.
Toronto was certainly the highlight of our trip and there was so much to do see and explore so we will stop there again on our passage back east. This 2020 sailing season was the summer of Covid so we were not able to go east on the US side of Lake Ontario. We look forward to a future sailing season where we can to the proper circle of the lake. Hopefully 2021 everything will be open.
If you want to know more about us, our boat, the gear we use to film and to see any of the previous episodes of Cruising Off Duty, you can find it all by going to www.CruisingOffDuty.com

Buy a mini scuba tank and pump off amazon gives you 10 minutes and you refill it on the boat 2-300 bucks most people have these down south for checking anchors and stuck anchors also for boat bottom cleaning

Sounds like a very good solution for anchor checking and underwater small jobs. I’ll look into that idea. Thanks!

Ha Ha! Tooo funny. I hear that. Every night before bed we throw up the latest nightly news YT episode. It is just 90% election coverage. I can’t wait for it to be over. So then it can go back to equally depressing coverage of COVID, Wild Fires, Hurricanes and COP bashing. Ha ha. We live in such an uplifting world. Let’s hope 2021 is better.

Med mooring is the opposite: the stern to dock. You backup to the dock. A bit harder. Nice video.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
Yes. That is what Janice said on the video. Usually backed in. But I was not sure what to call it other than Med moored even though it was backward. A club in Ottawa does it this way too and we would never go there because of that. To get on and off their boat people built sloping wooden ramps so they could get over their bow pulpit. I would have to be desperate to have my boat moored there tied up 6” apart. Not sure what happens in a wind storm. I am guessing those boats bash into each other a lot in big wind and waves.

@@Bowmans-Woods HI, I saw that at Britannia and wonder why they don't med moor. Harder to dock but is easier to get in and out. I sail out of Aylmer, QC. I saw on Ran sailing that the Swedish do same, bow first!?! I sail in the Med and the boat are next to each other with fenders in between. No storm while I was there. I saw video where it gets bag and they were damages. In the Med, there are too many boats and not enough space. I like that visit of lake Ontario. I see there are option to anchor.

Very nice video! Live and sail out of Kingston now, but sailed for many years in the Toronto area. I suggest you pick up a copy of the Lake Ontario Ports book. It's really the bible for Lake Ontario cruising. It tells you all the details about every marina and yacht club on the lake. If you are a yacht club member, most Toronto area yacht clubs give free reciprocal overnight dockage to members of other yacht clubs. Very handy cruising around the lake.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
Thanks. Yes, a book like that would be great. We are changing clubs (hopefully) next season so we will have some reciprocal rights. This year was a strange year. We called around to some of the marinas looking for a slip for the night and almost all said they were not accepting any visitor boats (even for pay) because when we filmed this in July most of Ontario was on full Covid lockdown and the yacht clubs did not want outsiders walking into their clubs to use the facilities. I understood the reason so we sort of decided that we would always try and scope out a spot to anchor at each stop ahead of time.

A perfect video for today. I was at Bronte Harbour hauling out today in the pouring rain. The “public dock” you identify in the Oakville Harbour video is a town dock and those spots are taken by two of the most expensive boats in Oakville. The Oakville Club is a pricy private club, that’s not a yacht club per se, but just has some docks of its own and does some group activities. I like the Oakville waterfront and, as a copper, feel safe in Oakville - sorry to hear that you were boarded at the town dock - like you said, there’s someone like that no matter where you go. Hey Malcolm. It was beautiful and we would definitely stop back. Oakville waterfront was clean and nice. Late at night we did see a few drunks hanging out on the cement wall. We were tied far from them so I felt we would be OK. Clearly the guy knew nothing about boats because all of our hatches were open, so clearly people were onboard. When I saw the lights in my cockpit it never crossed my mind I had been boarded. I thought Janice had heard something rubbing and went out to check it out. When I said, “What’s up” and I heard a male voice say “oh are you sleeping on your boat”, I was completely caught off guard. Like we both know, no matter how clean and safe a place is there are always going to be people lurking in the shadows that are looking to take anything that is not tied down. Drug and alcohol addition is a terrible disease that requires money. Once he knew I was onboard, he politely left my boat. So, I guess that is good. He was a friendly “Canadian” thief. Ha ha
@lancehymers4674
@lancehymers4674 3 года назад
I suppose it’s possible that he was just drunk or stoned and figured that he’d sleep on on your boat. I’m a copper too, and thinking the worst of everyone sort of comes with the job. (I worked street drugs in my youth for a few years and became honesty convinced that everyone I passed was probably carrying drugs. It was refreshing to get back to uniform and occasionally meet people that weren’t bikers or gang members). One problem some of our guys around here have had is little old Eastern European guys boarding their boats to fish and smoke.

@@Bowmans-Woods for sure. I remember coming back from sailing and telling my son (who wants join police force) Off Duty ...great boat name for retired police. Anyhow.... happy sailing.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
Yes. The name (Off Duty) on the back of our boat is pretty small. So most people are not aware it is us until they see an episode where they realize we were there. I guess if we wanted to advertise who we were, like many other YT Channels, we would put a big logo on each side of the Bow and maybe even spring for a sail with a logo. But then again most of those channels get sponsored by sail manufacturers that provide those sails. Too rich for my blood on this boat. Maybe the next boat (CAT). :-)

It was 15' down but I did not have a weight belt to it took a lot of effort just to get down to the anchor. Once down there is was so murky that I could not see much so I had to feel around with my hands to figure out what it was tangled on in the muck. Gross and not fun. But, it had to be done.

Good stuff guys. What kind of motor do you guys have? And how much would you say in gas it costs to travel 26 nauts on the motor alone?
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
30HP Volvo diesel. Not much $. Guessing less than $5. You could motor everywhere at around 5 knots and never raise a sail and still not spend no more than $200 in gas for the whole season. Sailboats are super efficient at moving through the water. Sometimes you want to run the engine too just to charge the batteries or produce hot water for showers or doing dishes so if the wind is light or on the nose, we generally motor. We get bored if we go below 2 knots. Sometimes we will just drift sail if we want peace and quiet though. Just depends if you want to be somewhere sooner rather than later.

@@Bowmans-Woods Awesome. Thanks a lot for the info! I hear diesels are the way to go as far as sailboat engines go.

Great video. Are you permitted you anchor anywhere as long as you are out of shipping lanes and ferry routes? Are the anchor symbols on the charts recommended spots to anchor based on the lake bed? Just some rookie questions, thanks.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
Yes. You can anchor as long as you are way out of the traffic lanes. Which we always were. If you are not allowed to anchor (such as near the Toronto Island Airport, it is marked with boys and on the maps. The anchor symbol is usually placed on the navionics maps based on people using it as an anchorage and the bottom being conducive to anchoring, such as sand or mud. Navionics will often mark what type of bottom if the area has been properly surveyed.
@bowwave59
@bowwave59 3 года назад
If your anchor has a ring or something you can attach a line to using a boat hook . You can pull the anchor out opposite direction. The boat hook also gives you extra reach under water . You need a boat hook that auto passes a line through a ring . Same as hooking up to a mooring buoy.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
Yes. In this case the chain was twisted around metal debris. The anchor was not what was stuck. So a rope on the ring would not have helped in this case.

Lake Ontario doesn't really ever freeze over like smaller lakes do but there will be floating ice going by in the water. Not a fan of winter. Can't wait to retire and sail 12 month a year instead of 6. :-)
