Bob Aladeniyi - ‘I didn’t betray Sunny Ade, I moved when the opportunity came’

In November 2011, I travelled to Owo town to meet the popularly acclaimed Wizard guitarist, Bobade Aladeniyi. He insisted that against allegations by fans of King Sunny Ade, his move against KSA in 1975, to create his own band was never an act of betrayal but interest and ambition.
Listen to the full interview and enjoy it.
The songs featured briefly in this interview were co-opted to establish some of Bob Aladeniyi's claims in the interview.

I really admire the guitar works of Bob Aladeniyi right from my youth days and it's a privilege to hear from him today! Bravo!!

Great, illuminating, revealing and very incisive interview. Above all, I appreciate the sense of forgiveness and the ability to put past issues aside between King Sunny and Bob Aladeniyi. That is one great lesson to unpack from this interview. I must not fail to appreciate the very clever way that the interviewer manages to squeeze vital contentious facts from Bob Aladeniyi as well as how Bob truthfully and gracefully acknowledge mutual mistakes.. Well done!!!

From what I can gather here, KSA is a great man and I admire his maturity despite what seems like betrayal from Bob Aladeniyi and co,he still identifies well with them. Long live the King.

I see some comments here.People saying he betrayed Sunny. So he should stay and serve Sunny for ever right? He should not make his own path? You think if Sunny had been a band boy and a record company came and offered him a brand new car and the best instruments of the day,he will stay?Didn't Sunny himself leave Abioro when he felt he was not getting what he deserves? Why didnt you say he betrayed Abioro then? After all he gave Sunny his break by signing him and taking him to London. There is a thing called ambition. If you don't have it yourself, its ok.But dont call those who want to better themselves names. Its only in Africa that we have that slave mentality. That we feel we have to always serve someone to death.Thats why you have leaders who still wanna rule after 4 terms and religious leaders behaving like gods.

I so much love your comment here sir. We all have ambitions and all music leaders had been a band boy at one time or a few times under different bosses. I only believe Sir Bob could have left alone, to gather a new team instead of poaching those he brought from Fela to KSA. Perhaps Ohiri and Chico were not getting enough rewards from KSA’s African Beats as they did from Fela, perhaps they were already complaining, and maybe they muted the idea together. These are my assumptions though. But one thing I’m sure of, if Bob had stayed on, either of two things would have happened. I swallow the rest. Today they have mutual respect for each other. God bless both men. This is my personal opinion, if I am allowed to be opinionated on any post I make here.

Fantastic interview. You are doing a great job to document these legendary Artists. Bob Aladeniyi is a genius. Chief Sunday Adeboye aka Sunny Adeboye (Late Orlando Owoh bass guitarist) passed on to glory few days ago. Any documentation on him? may his soul rest in peace. Dele Adeyanju is very good at what he does. Kudos to members of the crew.

Well done Bob Aladeniyi. I am highly impressed by the comments you made concerning your former boss King Sunny Ade. KSA himself has placed himself on a high esteem when it comes to discussing Nigeria music in general and Juju music in particular

Bob Aladeniyi, no doubts is a great guitarist but he was a traitor to KSA. Unfortunately, the law of camar caught up with him. He almost lost everything but still King Sunny Ade extended a friendship hands to him. Never bite a finger that once fed you. KSA, may you live long. Yes Bob Aladeniyi was a great sensation and big attraction for us then with his dark goggles. He no doubt contributed to the success of KSA. However he seems not to have the chronology perfect as E Kilo Fomo Ode was in 1974 also he left African Beats in 1974. While it was within his rights to leave KSA, the circumstances suggested a design to bring KSA down but for God who was with him. It is doubtful if his records under TYC sold as expected but he still have the respect of many of us for his dexterity on the guitar.

Legendary. I doff my hat 👒. Good history in the making and lots to learn for the future and now quickly by our artist in term of business contracts to save this happening in the future for a good society and a prosperity one too. This are subjects in the theatre arts department 🏬

High praises to Bob Aladeniyi for his contribution to KSA's emergence as a Superstar but his memory seems to be failing him...His last outing with the Sunny's African Beats was on the Album Ekilo F'omode released in 1974 NOT 1975

I didn't know I was going to hear something about the Sawa ladies. I was listening to the interview with King at EsaOke, after which this Bob interview auto followed. Meanwhile, initially, it was the oldie "juju le o fabo si" was what I was looking to hear. Didn't even know the story of it. I was always curious if those ladies were real, that composition was so deep for me, and that record was a big hit then and Evergreen today. Though I was little then, couldn't comprehend much.

No doubt Bob Aladeniyi is a big fish in the ocean. Kudos but please take note of this aspect of your interviews. Stay blessed.

This guy Bob is a classic example of a betrayer. However, the law of karma caught up with him and his fellow conspirator on the long run. They never got anywhere. They faded into obscurity even quicker than they emerged. Sunny is too good to be stopped by all those mischievous plot What goes around comes around

I think he was more of taking his opportunity, than betrayal. From what he said and how King handled it afterwards, I think King realised that he was going to leave somehow anyway. I have impression that King appreciated his contributions so much, even supporting his band. So, just absorb the whole story. Bob didn't create the disagreement between King and Abioro, and Abioro had also to continue in business somehow and it was not going to work using fresh unexperienced person.

In your opinion he betrayed sunny Ade, have you forgotten that he left one band to join Sunny Ade? To me that’s not a betrayal, he was trained by Rolling Dollars and Sunny Ade snatched him away, obviously our elders says “ pasan ti afi nan iyale” wa ni Oke aja” I hope you understand that what I mean . In my own opinion he was making personal efforts to make it on his own name which is not bad. He might not have fame like sunny Ade today doesn’t mean he didn’t archives any good. Life is not balance. There were many singers before king sunny ade and they didn’t makes it like sunny ade. So don’t Mock him for making efforts to be a man. You can see that he still have full respect for him.
