Why do people hold rings so high in regards to goat debates? I know it means championships but there are so many nuisances and circumstances that a lot of phenomenal players just couldn’t overcome. Most of the time it’s the better built team instead of who had the better star player

I’m not sure what “loser” is a…. - 13x All Star - 6x nba champion - 10x all-nba first team - 2 nba all star game mvp - 8x nba assists leader - top 75th anniversary player of all time Bob Cousy is credited as giving attention to flashy basketball which heavily increased the leagues popularity and attendance. The league was in its infancy at the time and was desperate for more publicity. It was bc of players like Cousy who brought wide spread attention and interest to the league at the time, that the nba is where it is today with its popularity. A great player in an era will find a way to be great in any era. The game is so different now, it’s just not fair to compare current players such a Chris Paul to Bob. There’s nothing wrong is saying that both Paul and Cousy are great respectively for the time they played. But to call Cousy a “loser” it’s just so disrespectful and not even true. Do some research buddy, bc you’re speaking straight out of your ass with no accurate information. The league may not half been as integrated as it is today. But over half of the Celtics that Bob Cousy played with were black. To name a few, Bull Russel, and KC Jones… And the reason the league was full of plummers and fireman was bc they weren’t making enough money off their nba contracts to not work. This doesn’t mean they weren’t the best talent in the world. It just means they weren’t getting paid alot
Your comment is beautiful!!! And what bothers me is when he said that they played again firemen and plumbers. So are firemen and plumbers just lazy, lard ass, worthless players? That offends me. So a fireman can be good enough to save your life but can't play basketball good/great? What does that mean? So when a pipeline breaks and this great plumbers saves your house from major flooding, he can't play basketball either????? So basically you can only be great at only one thing in life is what he is trying to say? What an insult to the ball players, firefighters, and plumbers. If I was a plumber and jj called me to come hire me to fix it, I would take me dear sweet time, go out to dinner, do some shopping, hopefully get held up at a long train while I'm headed to do my, POS job. True if I was I got a call at the fire department. Oops,.got a flat on the way, but since I'm so out of shape it took a little longer. He needs to watch who he talks about. It's an uproar about the players, but I'm upset about how he disrespected all 3. One day he will need a fireman and better hope that fireman didn't get as offended about that comment as I did. My dad was a fire captain and also was a great baseball player. Had to get surgery on both knees so couldn't do baseball anymore. So was my dad a POS firefighter or a POS baseball player?.......
And Bob cousy is sooooooo not a loser! There is a good chance without him and the other few pioneers, there would be no basketball like there is. All these players getting paid um way too much in the millions would be 'plumbers' and Uber drivers today. They shouldn't be talking down. They should be thanking them ever single day for what they started in the wonderful game of basketball.
Bob Cousy played with Bill Russel his entire career. If you look at the roster, over half the Celtics in the 50s were black. This “league was segregated” bull crap is just flat out not true
Also to add for WIlt, when he came in the NBA, he broke the single season record points per game and rebounds per game in his rookie year. To add that, he also won the MVP that season too. Wes Unseld was the only other rookie to win MVP while Elvin Hayes, if I am not mistaken, was the last rookie to lead the NBA in scoring. Wilt was the only one to do both as a rookie and both single season records he had as a rookie are still standing to this day.

Idk if y’all ever watch old school basketball but there is a HUGE difference between the 50’s and the 60’s. Now imagine comparing both eras with the MODERN NBA
To be honest with the rules back then even if you dropped Kyree in 1960 game 7 of the finals he’d get called for travel every time he tried to crossover. Rules were different back then, you could barely create contact or it was an offensive foul. Plus you had to dribble the ball up and down literally,so no palming the ball or letting your hand go under it or on the side of it when dribbling.
They literally never called travel on Iverson until 2000s stop the cap 😒 all of his dribbles would be legal lol Its just the double step back would be called
Irrelevant yet interest parallel between Cousy and CP3: That 1958 Finals closout out game LOW referred to at 13:48 is the game where Bob Pettit scored 50 points to clinch the title for the Hawks. The next time a player dropped 50 to win a championship was Giannis last season.. against CP3!
@@m.j.w.2876 Never said it was. The point was CP3 and Cousy were both on the court as opponents for the only two 50-point title clinchers in NBA history, more than 60 years apart. Irrelevant to the main topic, but an interesting parallel between the two players in the discussion.
I didn't compare anyone. Just acknowledged what I thought was an interesting similarity between the 2 players in the video. Fair or unfair, those outcomes are still in the record books.
A more interesting comparison would be Jason Kidd versus Bob Cousy. Two point guards that can't score efficiently, but still made everyone else around them better with their court awareness, ability to read the defense, and set up their teammates for an easy one. Kevin Johnson would be a more direct comparison to Chris Paul. Kevin Johnson turned the Suns around to a winning franchise the season they started him, 55+ wins, and kept it that way throughout most of his career, even before Barkley joined the Suns. Their numbers are virtually identical.
Yes. Bob Cousy is not a top 5 or even top 10 PG of all time. But sometimes I think the likes of JJ Reddick take it a bit too far. I mean just some time ago, Gilbert Arenas said that Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman would not be able to play in today's game. So it goes both ways really. @@kingad8869 You can't read. The reason CP3 is more talented is because you can now be just a basketball player and you're trained at a very young age. It's why guys like LaMelo and Luka are coming in and instantly being difference-makers. Cousy was actually VERY good. He could make passes that were like something Magic would do. He wasn't a great shooter but literally the entire league was trying to figure the game out back then. By the time West and Robertson came in, they had 10 years of basketball to look at. By the time CP3 came in, guys could legitimately JUST play basketball, plus he's got all the technology and medicine behind him that you didn't have in the 1950s. It's just dumb to call CP3 a better player when we don't know what he would've been in Cousy's era and we don't know what Cousy would've been today. What we do know is that both guys had great talent on their squads. CP3 has had some of the best teams in the league for the past decade and he has had ZERO championships. Cousy won 6. Plus Cousy contributed in a major way to those chips. CP3 has contributed in a major way to all the losing. There's no excuse for his performance vs the Mavs and there's no excuse for dropping a 2-0 lead last year. No excuse for being bounced by Corey Brewer and Josh Smith against Houston. No excuse for playing like trash in the 2019 WC Semis during crucial moments. It's just silly to keep protecting CP3 like he isn't a historical playoff choker when it matters most.
The dude just doesn't know how to argue. Cousy was more than just a guy who had 29 assists. He was making those Magic Johnson passes 30 years before Magic did it. He was that revolutionary. Yeah he sucked as a shooter but it was just how things went then. Thing is Cousy was a major contributor to 5 championship teams and he was ahead of his time. CP3 has never won anything despite having a great level of talent around him. At some point, you just gotta stop protecting CP3 from criticism. It seems that we just say he's a top 5 PG but there's nothing to back that up. He's not better than Magic or IT. Not better than Stockton. Not better than Kidd or Nash. Not better than West or Robertson. Not better than Steph or Tony Parker. He's maybe top 10 but definitely near the bottom of that top 10. The playoffs are where you shine and prove you're a top 10 player. CP3 has fizzled out too many times to have a legit case. Say what you will about Cousy, he did win 5 chips and he contributed to that winning in a major way.

Loving this video. People don't realize the NBA was founded in 1947, not 1908. So to your point when Bob Cousy was drafted, it was a brand new league. No real backing and them cats had to have 9-5s. Especially in Bob's case when the league finally became integrated in a lighter degree and he was not that dude.
Arguments that can be made on behalf of Cousy: 1. “There were only 8 teams” That means that, on a nightly basis, Cousy had to play against members of the top 100 players in the world. You had to be MUCH better than your peers to earn a spot on a team back then. Nowadays, the top 600 players in the world are in the NBA. (The limit on the number of black players allowed on teams diminished the quality of players within the league, and that fact weakens this argument) 2. “Cousy only got 1st team All NBA once while Jerry West and Oscar Robertson were in the league” First, no he did it twice. Secondly, Cousy was already a 10 year veteran by the time West and Robertson entered the league. He retired 2 years after their rookie seasons so of course he’s not going to beat them for All-NBA… BECAUSE HES NOT IN THE LEAGUE
He had to play against the top 100 players in the world because the league had about 100 players, there’s about 450 players in todays league, it’s much bigger yes but it’s also way more talented, so that arguments don’t really help out Cousy
There might have been fewer teams, but also way fewer people who wanted to play on them. There won't be any data available for that, but it would be much more interesting to compare how many people competed for one spot on an NBA roster back then as opposed to now. That would give us a much better idea when it was the most difficult to make the league. I'm only guessing, but I think right now there are many more people who are dreaming of playing in the NBA (or rather, are actively doing everything they can to achieve that goal) than there were in the '60s.
I agree with many of the comments regarding my first point. It’s not really possible to determine how talented the league was at that time since it wasn’t international and interest in the sport was lesser than it is now. Good eye, folks.

For the record Cousy's first roommate was non other than . . . Chuck Cooper, and they remained friends after Cooper left. The plumbers and fireman comment may have been a bit too far but in the larger context he’s had a point. It’s one thing to respect Bob Cousy for what he did. But to compare him to Chris Paul? They are nowhere near the same levelZ
My issue wasn't with the comment about Cousy, it's the fact it sounded like he was completely disregarding and disrespecting the players that came before him just to make a point about CP3 and his place in history. I think Jerry West's reply was an adequate response.
he's not a bad playoff performer, he's a choker. the same way you said all the greats have bad games, a lot of great but non championship players also have good numbers lol barkley for example. except barkley has done way more bob cousy was in his 10th year when they came in at 32 years old... back when 30 was old in sports. bob cousy led the league in assists. you gotta be stupid lol if he was nasty with no effort imagine with today's effort.
Basketball fans are so weird. In no other major sport do I hear people calling older eras trash. It would be like calling Babe Ruth a bad hitter because the fast balls back in his time barely broke 60 MPH. Its just a wild tone that I don't understand. I mean, i get that older generations weren't as skilled and the league was smaller, but they were basically inventing the game as they played. Cousy basically invented behind the back no look passes. He helped invent the fast break. He, and many of his peers, were pioneers, innovators. And they weren't paid tons of money to do it. They did it for a passion of the game. It is wildly disrespectful to look at all that and say that their stats were bad, the whole decade was trash. Personally, I think Bob Cousy's natural talent was amazing. He had fast hands, good court vision, and was highly creative. If he was born in a more recent era his numbers would have been much better. That said, Mad Dog Russo is absolutely huffing some serious copium here. I get being upset that the old hoopers are being disrespected, but then there is just being in denial. Bob Cousy himself admitted that there were kids being taught what he invented and pulling it off better then he did.
When we’re arguing about Bob Cousy being better than Chris Paul, we’re going into the land of ridiculousness. First Take and a lot of TV sports media is a circus.
Cousy was better though. CP3, given all his better training and his great teammates has ZERO championships and a decade of playoff meltdowns. Cousy had great teams too but he actually won. You can't just disregard that cause CP3's stats look nicer. His stats are about as worthless as Westbrook's given how they both have only made 1 Finals, lost it, and had great teams that ended up in disappointment. Westbrook is a boneheaded player and CP3's IQ is higher, but the outcome is the same because they're both just stat guys.
The skills from Cousy’s era were truly embryonic, his game is completely incomparable to Chris Paul’s. Cousy and Chris Paul are both great players but these kind of comparisons should never be made.
Bob cousy isn't even better than ricky rubio. The skill gap from the 50's to now is so extreme that you really cannot say anyone playing in that era is great by todays standards

The one thing I'll say about Cousy's efficiency is just to look at Jason Kidd and tell me it's any different with him. Looking at their overall career numbers it's pretty similar.
If Reddick had to dribble according to the ball handling rules that were enforced during the 1960s, he couldn't even dribble with his RIGHT hand. He'd be called for carrying/palming every time.
The reason why the Celtics never won before Bill Russell was because they were lacking in defense and rebounding. That’s why they went and got Russell because that’s the main piece that they were missing and Russell filled it perfectly. That’s when the fast break was invented. It’s not necessarily because Cousy sucked.

Chris Paul did have a 10 point game against the Bucks in the Finals. It was really an 8 point game, but Chris made a shot with like 2 seconds left that had no significance other than in the stats. So he was pretty useless in that game.
