We are kicking off Season 12 of the Everything Happens Podcast (!!) with a little bonus situation because we’re having a little bonus moment. Kate’s new book HAVE A BEAUTIFUL, TERRIBLE DAY! Is available everywhere books are sold.
It is a book of daily meditations meant to ground whatever day you’re having-all of the ups and downs and inbetweens. And who better to talk about that with than my friend, Bob Crawford. Bob is the bass player for the wildly popular band The Avett Brothers, and someone who knows too well how terrible and beautiful life can be.
In this conversation, Kate and Bob discuss:
How there can be a strange comfort in our worst moments
How they continued despite the ongoingness of their kinds of tragedies
Why they both long for more spiritual language around living like this

Oh Lord, I am sitting here listening to Bob and Kate and sobbing because I relate since…….. briefly : my exceptionally kind, truly loving 46 year old daughter has been physically disabled all her life, had 28 major surgeries, almost died twice, gone through major pain, Treated cruel and worthless by some (many) medical people, treated worthless in school, etc…. The list goes on and on…..then Amy was experiencing blood in the urine and pain and we could not get an appointment with the urologist or even her primary care. My husband and I were in disbelief. We hate the ER, have been there many times. .. you wait for 4-6 hours , finally go into a room and wait again to see a doctor who looks like a teenager and wants to go into textbook detail…. I could go on but the point is that it took a lot for us to go to the ER. Long story very short. They found a large mass in her bladder. It is not a “normal” bladder cancer but extremely rare ( only 6 in US). Immunotherapy we hoped would help, the cancers grew. Radiation helped and reduced the pain (Amy was so happy). Only to come back in 2 weeks. We are all sick and heart broken. We love Jesus but is it “ fare” that someone who has struggled all her life now has terminal cancer. There are no reasons or explanations. Kate, I’ve heard many platitudes and scripture verses all of Amy’s life….so damaging. Jesus wouldn’t do that. Now we are facing the un-faceable. Oh Lord help us all. GraceHollyMcCartin from Ohio. Sorry for such a long comment. You both have helped me.
