Based on air time, I suspect Professor Hinkley was the third most important character on the show; after Gilligan and Jonas. One of the most heart-warming things about the show was how much Alan Hale enthusiastically embraced being the lovable Skipper until the end of his life. What a corny, goofy, ridiculous, and brilliant series. 👏 ❤

"The professor and Mary Anne" sounds so much better to me than "and the rest" and is the way remember the theme best. Kind of jarring if you find episodes with the older version of the song. Good on Bob for getting his costars recognition here

FUN FACT: The theme song we hear from Season One, that excludes the Professor and Mary Ann, isn't even the first theme song the show had. The original Gilligan's Island Pilot, which NEVER aired until TBS bought the rights and first aired it in 1992, didn't include Ginger, either. The only people given credit in either the song or the opener is Alan Hale, Jr. and Bob Denver. Jim Backus, and Natalie Schafer, although credited, were referred to as, "Mr. and Mrs. Millionaire" in the song. The rest were called "...and the other tourists", and did not receive any billing in the opener.

It wasn’t just the theme song where those two were treated differently. Their credits as “co-stars” came in the end credits during the first season. This was a contractual thing where they weren’t considered “full” cast members. This was changed in season 2, where their billing was in the opening credits and their character names were included in the theme song. Their agents must have renegotiated their contracts. Along with higher billing comes a higher paycheck, so the producers were probably trying to keep costs as low as possible in season 1 by paying those two less than the others. If Bob Denver helped in getting them a promotion, as it were, then that’s being more of a hero than just having them including in the theme song.

I also remember seeing the second season change to the opening song, and we all looked in surprise and then laughed together. We realized that other people thought it wasn't right either. When you realize there's only two on the island not mentioned, and you bother to say "and the rest," you might as well just give them their individual due. In 1973, when NBC wanted to produce Star Trek The Animated Series, as a follow up to the original series, they wanted to cut corners and leave out some characters, notably Sulu (George Takei) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). Actor Leonard Nimoy (Spock) refused to perform his voice acting without these two characters. The studio was forced to go along with his wishes.

There was something about Bob's goodness that resonated on the screen. I heard a story that Tina Louise took the role of Ginger because she was led to believe the show centered around her character (despite the name of the show). But yeah, Mary Ann. I prefer that character.
@KasumiKenshirou
@KasumiKenshirou 3 месяца назад
I've heard conflicting things about that. Tina Louise and Sherwood Schwartz did not get along, so Schwartz may have invented that story after Louise refused to return for the reunion movies. I heard the disagreement was about the royalties on reruns of the TV show. Apparently the stars of the show did not get a cent for the decades and decades of reruns, and she wanted a cut of that money before she'd agree to appear in a reunion.
@rgrif777
@rgrif777 3 месяца назад
Yes, Mary Ann hands down. Raquel Welch was supposed to play Ginger, but they felt she was too similar to Mary Ann and chose Tina. I would have just thrown a red wig on Raquel personally. Russell Johnson was more famous than Tina, so I don't know why they couldn't have added the professor to the song. I know the first episode had a different professor, Ginger, Mary Ann, and title song. I was lucky enough to see it. I liked both first episode Ginger and Mary Ann, but was glad they chose Russell.

I've always been a 'Mary Ann' devotee myself, although i wouldn't kick Ginger aside. Nice people are such a rarity in Hollywood today, and it's refreshing to hear of a star who was an authentic caring person. [There are some today-but hard to find.] Good for him taking a stand to include Dawn and Russell. Never did like the first season theme song. Interesting story..i used to hang out at a night club back in the 80's and one night i was helping this band unload their gear and set up, when i found out they used to be The Wellingtons!! [Can't remember what their new name was] Older of course, and a couple new members and they were harder rock, but it was them. Great bunch of guys! Hung out with them after their set and got to be friends. It was also The Wellingtons who played 'The Mosquitos' on one episode where a rock band comes to the island. I thought that the reason they said ."...and the rest" was because of the cast changes from the original pilot hadn't been settled yet but they had to complete the song. Then they fixed it when they went to the second season. That's the way I've always understood it to have happened.

I seem to remember reading that the "and the rest" was because of Tina Louise' contract, which stated she either had to be the first credit, or the last. I recall that she went to Sherwood Schwartz (spelling?) and let that part of the contract go, so Dawn and Russell would be named as equal cast members. Another factoid, apparently none of the cast members got residuals. It just wasn't a thing back then because no one foresaw the massive syndication options that came to be soon after the show ended. So all these actors got nothing from those years of reruns.

Although Bob went to bat for Dawn and Russell, Dawn didn't find out until 30 years later why it was changed from the 'rest' to the professer and Mary Ann when she appeared on a talk show with Katie Couric. We were looking over a walkway into a gorge when I saw to my right a guy that was dressed in white bell bottoms, a red an white striped shirt and a sailor cap. I thought why would anyone want to look like Gilligan here? Then he looked at me. I nearly had a cow! It was him, not a guy trying to look like him. Bob Denver was the real deal, a genuinely good man. Unfortunately for so many in Hollywierd today it is all about appearing virtuous not being virtuous.

Born in the early 60's, Gilligan's Island was, of course, a staple tv show in our house, beloved by both our parents and we children. I aspired to be Dawn, and over the years, had a childhood crush on Bob (due to his goofiness,) compared Alan to my favorite uncle, and later in life, had an adult crush on Russ (his comedic timing as the "straight man" was spot-on!) The commercial at the end was wonderful- so many faces from my childhood viewing!

In the original 1963 pilot, which had the original theme song, Ginger, who'd been demoted to secretary along with Bunny (not Mary Ann), only Gilligan, Skipper, and the Howells were in the opening. I imagine that Tina Louise's agent, who told here she'd be the star of GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, at least got her front billing. As far as redoing the opening goes, I suppose the only additional expense from adding Professor & Mary Ann to the theme song was from having it sung again, since the opening had to be refilmed for Season 2 anyway because it was going from B&W to color. 1:52 - According to Bob Denver, Dawn Wells was on the other side of him for the TV GUIDE May 8, 1965 cover, but someone cropped her out (only the edge of her pigtail appeared on the spine according to Denver), so only he & Tina L. ended up on the cover. 3:48 - I understand that while they didn't sing the GI theme song for S2 & 3, the Wellingtons did appear on the show in S2 episode "Don't Bug the Mosquitos" as the other Mosquitos with actor Les Brown, Jr. I prefer Mary Ann to Ginger myself. She's much more down-to-earth.

Dave, I don't know if you've seen the 2001 film "Surviving Gilligan's Island" which starred Bob Denver, Dawn Wells, and Russell Johnson with Dwayne Hickman. In the film, Bob, Dawn, and Russell tell stories of what happened behind the scenes, including the ones in this video. Tina wasn't the only one that hated the show at first, Natalie hated it too, but she changed her mind once she befriended the rest of the cast.

I even thought that a good 2nd transition of the theme song would go "a professor and farm girl here in Gilligan"a Isle.* This since Gilligan was the only one mentioned by name because the show bears his name as well Didn't watch "Many loves" very much but enjoy the Way he reacted to the word "WORK!*

I went back and watched the dueling theme songs (I remember both). Wow the show isn't the same without that UHF static! As a kid I loved the slapstick quality of the show and all the characters were well cast and interesting. Definitely team Mary Ann for me. Probably good it only lasted 3 years, enough to syndicate but avoid the problems of running out of ideas.

The original pilot had a different professor and two other woman, one a secretary named Bunny. They decided to recast but when the song was written they did not have the Professor and Mary Ann as definite characters yet. Thus, “and the rest”. It was because at that particular time they had no clear idea what other characters would be joining the cast. It was not a slight on Russel Johnson or Dawn Wells. They simply had not been cast yet!
