I attended this concert at the BBC Studios and still have the ticket stub. I remember The Pretty Things sitting behind me in what was a very small audience probably around 60 people at the most. When Bob Dylan was introduced he came on and instead of singing he started to check his tuning and the floor manager tried to coax him into carrying on but Bob was having none of it and they had to stop recording until he was ready. Eventually the concert started to rapturous applause and the recording was split into two halves and shown on consecutive Saturday evenings in B/W of course a few weeks later. Unfortunately the video tapes were wiped but the sound track in its entirety still exists thankfully.
Dylan’s got me through some real messed up times man, truly one of they greatest songwriters that’ll ever walk the face of the planet. Thanks for posting this
I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl later that Summer 1965 after Newport. He played the first set with his original classics and the second set, he brought in "The Band" for his newer electronic stuff. I was 16 and stole my mom's Impala, scared shitless driving up I-5 to see him. I COULD NOT miss that concert!!
I miss my Impala sooo much... My ex-husband and I (I'm female, lol) bought a destroyed '64 black, 4-door Impala, and had it all restored. It was the most beautiful , slick car I ever drove in. The city used to ask us to be in the parades every year. The Hispanic guys literally used to yell, and hoot and holler at us every time we drove by them, and they'd always get us to stop, LOL... It was great. U definitely feel really cool and tight as fuck showin up to parties or weddings or any kinda event in one of those, cuz ppl ALWAYS wanted to come and admire it. Only thing it needed was new shocks :/ Anytime we went into gas stations or had any porkers in the backseat it would bottom out, LOL... My ex-husband decided to sell it so we could move to another state and I could finish college... That was 20 yrs ago, and I still have a TON of guilt over it. That was OUR prize possession ... Great memories in that car :D
why is this not available as a stand alone record-. a true master work reeking of true authenticity- listen to the truly heartbreaking harmonica solo on lonesome death of hattie carroll ; understated , unforgettable and universal.
Thank you for posting this exquisite performance. What a treat to get to hear it 56 years later. I was 2 when it was performed. Thank you, Bob Dylan, for writing and singing these songs. They make my world a richer place.
I almost never comment on youtube videos, but I've been listening to this post on repeat while writing my current book, and I don't think I could have kept focus through a hurricane and a rough semester without it. I have over 30 Dylan albums, but this recording is just.....perfect for inspiring focus, precision, and work.
Maybe you could post John Wesley Harding Sessions? There must be several versions of all along the watchtower... you're doing a big job... thanks for all.
Thanks for uploading. This is unbelievably fantastic even if you ignore that this is a performer 56 years ago, playing live, unaccompanied, no technological enhancements, all original songs.
I'm glad I came across your comment. I too have anxiety that I can barely survive. So will listen to Bob. I've tried lots of other music but you're right, Dylan will do the trick. Thank you so much. ❤
Not bad for an "unwashed phenomena". We just weren't ready for his penetrating prospectives and playful repartee. He burst upon the scene. He was just so new and unafraid you couldn't help but listen. I'm still in the audience admonishing and encouraging, Rock on Bob, rock on....
Bob at his peak as a folksinger! Excellent! Where are the fucking idiots that say " He can't sing". There isn't no other voice in the History of popular music able to inhabit a Song yust like Bob Dylan does & to transmit such pure emotion!🤗🤗🤗
I was born in England. My parents went to this. They talked about it almost every time I played Bob when I found his treasure chest in 1975. When I was 11.
My dad played Dylan in the car when I was maybe 4 - 5, and - specifically Mr. Tambourine Man - stuck with me for YEARS. Even over 10 years has the melody reminded me of a simpler time. When everything was alright.
I just watched Don't Look Back this morning. One of his most historical concerts. His solo concerts where amazing, and it was very nice while it lasted. 64-65 are not my favorite live years, but they sure are some of his most historical.
My son listened to Bob Dylan on noise canceling headphones as he developed schizophrenia. Masters of War got him through the roughest part of his descent.
Dylan here already 6 years a Prof!! So steady this guy! Beautiful, Dylan❤️🌞🌺🌹🌷👌 Last Acoustic concert.. So Special.. Dylan knew.. This is so impressive❣️👌 Thanks Swingin’🌻💫 Thanks DearDylan🌹🌺❤️👌 #BeforeElectricDylan
No artist has the gravitas of Bob Dylan. Only Woody Guthrie. And he wrote during dust bowl depression years. Bob was really out of context during the silly sixties. He was relevant because of the Cold War and Vietnam.
I keep on thinking, all the people controlling the evil and oppression in this world, Americans, Brits, everybody - didn't you ever listen to this stuff? Where were you? The whole world is suffering, and probably dying, and there's a near- universal dearth of decency, of consideration for for out fellow human beings, and for all life on earth.
How heartwarming tribute to his one true love .. as he heads to Italy 🌟🧡🌟🎼🎶. Thank you SW. It was so majestic to hear he voice has not changed, since 1965 🌟 💎
somewhere there's the other half of this concert with: mr tambourine man; its alright ma; north country blues; one too many mornings; gates of eden; it ain't me babe...
There really needs to be a worldwide search of archives for the missing tapes, or films if they were ever transferred. The BBC often sent tapes on 16mm film to other broadcasters in other countries which were never returned. Missing tapes of other shows have turned up in Australia and Canada TV stations and also in private collections so who knows. Such a search would probably make an interesting TV series too. Very surprised that Columbia Records didn't ask the BBC for video copies after the show, split into two broadcasts, was recorded all those years ago.
Long ago I had a bootleg LP of Dylan, possibly at Isle of Wight. I've lost it somewhere. But it had beautiful versions of "To Ramona" and "Purple Heather". I wish someone could find and post these. Much thanks for this great set of tunes.
Incredible, thank you. One minor point -- it wasn't "less than a month later" that he went electric at Newport; it was closer to 2 months (from June 1 to July 25).
This sounds great, thanks Swingin! Every nugget is pure GOLD. as an aside I wonder if that was the hospitalization in England when he feverishly penned the infamous 10 pages of vomit which he transformed into Like a Rolling Stone. ?
A long time since my comment. I stopped by to listen again and to make a comment I've never made before but wanted to re; "Hollis Brown"... I just wish when Hollis went to buy those shotgun shells he'd have bought 8 instead of 7...
Ironic that this last acoustic show of Dylan ends the same way Newport '65 ended (when he was forced to go back to do a short acoustic set) With Dylan singing It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.
