It is inspiring to see a young man today react to this song the same way my generation did when it came out in 1964. It was an anthem for us that still resonates today. He really did. Hell, he basically “opened” for MLK. He played at the March on Washington on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before MLK gave the famous “I have a dream” speech. To be fair, the archival video of it makes it seem like not too many people were that into it but the point is he was there not a spectator but as an official participant. There are a plenty of vids on RU-vid of the performance. The quality of the video is terrible. The quality of the message is beautiful.

If you’re referring to the recent stories in the news like George Floyd, it’s purely political. It’s sad that George Floyd died but it was obviously not at true fault of the officer. Floyd had lethal doses of meth and fentanyl in his system and he had COVID 19. He said he couldn’t breathe before the officers even touched him. The knee on the back of the neck to put down resisting criminal is often used in arrests. So yes, he protested civil rights back when it was an actual problem, not just a 1 out of a billion outlying event.

Dylan is primarily recognised as one of the greatest songwriters and poets of all time. He revolutionised pop and rock to become more meaningful. His influence within music is perhaps only comparable to The Beatles (who idolised him). I fully recommend reacting to 'Like A Rolling Stone' (his most celebrated song), 'Positively 4th Street', and 'Don't Think Twice, It's Alright'. Love your reactions and how you look into the lyrics. With Dylan, the lyrics are everything.

This song was an anthem of the Civil Rights battles of the 60's, as were many Dylan songs. Try "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" and "Only a Pawn in The Game". This hit in 1964 during the passage of new Civil Rights laws and the early days of the disaster of the Vietnam War. Listen to his acoustic stuff first. Great reaction.

Imagine the impact it had on me, and all of my friends, when it was first released nearly 57 years ago. He, along with Joan Baez, Peter Seeger and the folk singers of the day fired up us in Australia, and all around the world. Made us think very differently about social, political and world issues. Dylan blew into NYC in January of '61 full of folk songs he had picked up along the way. Played the folk venues of Greenwich Village with just his guitar, harmonica and a voice that sounded like a dog with its' leg caught in a barbed wire fence. "The original vagabond. The unwashed phenomenon." Yet by October he had a recording contract with Columbia. His hundreds of songs are poignant and powerful. He was among the first inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" has earned many Grammys been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream" speech and won the Nobel Prize for Literature 3 years ago. His instrumentation is usually simple; it's the lyrics that matter. If you like protest songs, A Hard Rain is Going to Fall is fantastic. Patti Smith sang it when she accepted his Nobel Prize for Literature. I'd recommend starting with three albums: The Freewheeling Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks. There are so many great songs, but these would be a good introduction.

I saw your reaction to Like a Rolling Stone and came looking for this one. LOVED the reaction! Dylan was one of the greatest poets/lyricists of our time, and too many never give him a listen because of his voice. They're more concerned about the sound than they are the message, so they miss it. Given a chance, they'd learn to appreciate both. Might want to check out Dylan's Tangled Up In Blue. This was written during the civil rights movement during the 60's. He was the voice of a generation, and was the first guy to electrify folk music. It's been a long time, but He was a huge deal in his day, and obviously a great poet.
