Like Dylan producer said, “obviously Bob Dylan was touched by god’s hand”. Today, Dylan is amazed that he wrote this type of thing. Anything from albums “Highway 61” or double album “Blonde on Blonde” it will apply to your life personally, somehow. Miraculously.

He saw the future Harri, but no one listened, and times are no better now than when Dylan composed this song. A warning, like so many of his songs, disregarded.

From Bob's 1964 album titled the same name, this is a Anthem of changes inspired by Irish and Scottish ballads. It wants for nothing lyrically, and is still so incredibly spot on with today's society, and is a timeless work of art. As the harmonica and guitar play the melody, Bob's articulated vocals draw you in for a great tune. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Dave. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

My father came home one afternoon when I was playing Dylan's "Bringing It All Back Home". The song was "The Gates of Eden". He said "What is wrong with that man? Is he trying to sing or is he dying?". About a month later I'm stuck on a couple of chords learning a Dylan song so I go buy a Dylan songbook with about fifty of his best songs between 1962 to 1965. A few days later I come home and my father's at the dining room table intently reading the book. I said "Dad, I thought you didn’t like him, that's the the guy you asked if he was dying when I was playing his album. He looked up at me and said "I don’t care what he sings like, this kid is really one helluva poet!" I wish Dad was still around when Dylan got the Noble Prize so I could have joked with him about that day long ago. 😊

I remember this well from the mid-60s. Folk music was very popular and coffee shops sprung up everywhere where folk singers would sing songs like this or recite poetry. It was a very interesting time. Folk music, flower children, civil rights protests, anti-war protests. Bob Dylan was at the helm during this time. His songs were so meaningful. Thanks for referring this Dave and thanks for your reaction Harri. 👏👏👍

Having just read through the comments, I find myself wanting to add a few very important aspects of this Dylan anthem of the 1960s era in the U.S. Dylan wrote the song, and it was released in October 1963. One month later, on November 23, 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Throughout his career, Dylan has rarely performed “The Times They Are a-Changin'” during his live shows. The night after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy he decided to perform the song. The song is about the tumultuous and historic struggle for changes in civil rights, a highly divisive war in Vietnam, etc. A new generation of emerging younger citizens insisted on major changes from the days of their parents and earlier generations. I submitted the song both for its historical relevance and as one of Dylan's greatest songs of the 20th century.

i understand he wrote the song to the back drop of civil rights and vietnam. but times have changed, and with that so has the meaning of the song. the song is now about all aspects of change from generation to generation and is still so good because you can apply it to almost anything. for example. Youth: do you understand why a person might want to identify as someone other than a boy or a girl? Older generation: no. i dont understand that. you either a boy or a girl. i dont understand why these people keep talking crazy. Youth: well mothers and fathers through out the land, dont criticise what you dont understand. it seems to me that so many people of older generations claim to love bob dylan but ignore every word he said. but young people love bob. always have. always will.

Neil, I agree with the perspective you've presented, especially when it comes to generational viewpoints. "A self-conscious protest song, it is often viewed as a reflection of the generation gap and of the political divide marking American culture in the 1960s. Dylan, however, disputed this interpretation in 1964, saying 'Those were the only words I could find to separate aliveness from deadness." I am 71 years old and lived through the tumultuous 60s. The 1960s were a time in American history when there were starkly different perspectives between generations. Bob Dylan's music and songwriting were anthems of the era, much like Sam Cooke, as they conveyed their message through their lyrics. Some people understood the message while others did not, which is not surprising. This same divide between age groups can also be seen in many songs, both old and new. The meaning of a song is often interpreted differently by people with different views. Therefore, Dylan's lyrics and music are timeless because they can be understood in different ways by different people. To be open-minded, one must listen to others while also being introspective, and open to change. Personally, that is why this Dylan song was a very good submission choice. @NeilLewis77

When one can write a song that not only captures the time you are living in And can predict the future with accuracy, That artist is not only brilliant, but an Oracle to the times we are living in and beyond 50, 60, 70 or how many years after this young man penned it. A true poet and an amazing musician and Songwriter. Heed These Words!!! There are prophets who speak among us.

As corrupt as our government was at the time Dylan wrote this song, I'm sure even he couldn't predict the depths of depravity we have sunk into since 2016. So again, it's up to our sons and our daughters to set these politicians straight. It's about marching ahead and not trying to turn the clock back. Love Dylan and I love you too Harri.

"Make Love, Not War", switch from supporting the Military Industrial Complex & starve the War machine, & don't suppress those kids that are demonstrating against injustice, & don't be a stumbling block to a progressive future, "get outta the new one"..... "The loser ( the anti war mvmt was unpopular at first)" now, will be later to win"..... He wrote lyrics like he was an OT prophet, in a Protest Song, style called the "Talking Blues". A lot of tunes favoring Civil Rights too, in his early years......
