In October 1984 Bob Geldof saw a news report detailing the horrific drought and famine in Ethiopia that was threatening to indiscriminately take the lives of 30 million men, woman and children. Determined to help these defenceless people that had no voice of their own, Bob and Midge Ure quickly teamed up and set a process in motion that led to one of the biggest fundraising initiatives ever. Watched by billions of people on 95% of TV screens across the globe, Live Aid is the greatest concert of all time.

I’ll never forget what you did Bob. You aligned so many people and must have overcome so many barriers, to keep people focused on the need to give money and save lives. No difficult vaccine needed, these people suffering so badly needed something which was so freely available to us, food. The country got behind you and my generation came united behind this cause. You raised , awareness, money and put together the best live show I’ve ever seen. 35 years on and I will never forget the show and the plight you brought in too our rooms. Thank you Bob , Gary C Leeds. ❤️

Generale 💁🏾‍♀️ I get your sentiment; however, it was done solely to help the starving ppl of Ethiopia ‘n not the world. That said, the by products of the performance certainly made many ppl in the world feel thankful that they had food to eat so it wasn’t burdensome to contribute whatever they had to the cause. So to that end, yes, it made the world (at that time) a little better...but of course...it didn’t stay that way as ppl of the world now are pretty much self centered with all of their ‘nationalist’ rhetoric we hear them spew today.

If every single one of us could be BOB GELDOF the world would be a much better place!!! This is what makes the world a much better place. Bob Geldof, I am now 50 years old. I remember watching Live Aid in Wisconsin where I still live today!!! I was 14 at the time. It was the most amazing thing. I was able to see all my favorite bands live in my Livingroom. I remember waiting for Duran Duran to come on. Just the fact that you cared so damn much about other people other than yourself or family or friends is what made this love all about. The world needs more people like you. I still to this day listen to that Christmas song! It is my favorite. Thank you for what you have done and what you continue to do!!! It would be an honor and a privilege to meet you. To all those 322 dislikes, you have NO HEART!!!

A year after Live Aid, I was 21 years old on a trip to visit relatives in the UK. I was touring the Roman baths, in the city of Bath near Bristol. I was in the middle of reading an information sign at one of the sites, and out of the blue I heard this deep unmistakable voice. It was Bob Geldoff standing right next to me with his wife and young child, just touring around like I was. I wanted to say something to him, and thank him for what he had done, but they seemed like just a normal family. No one else was around, and I didn’t want to intrude on his family time. Part of me is glad I did not bother him, while the other part regrets not saying anything. He did something very special. PS...on that same trip, heading home from Standstead Airport, I sat down in the departure lounge and one row over, sitting right in front of me, were Sting and Peter Gabriel. They were on the Amnesty International tour. How’s that for some rock star sightings!

ThatCarSpotterCanada 😩 Where are ppl forgetting the other acts of that day 👀? IDT ppl are deliberately forgetting that others were there are all. That said, none of those other acts were as memorable as Queen's iconic perforce...there's a difference. I watched the concert from home and recorded loads of performances BUT there were only a few that I can honestly say that stand out for me that day that I can STILL remember. Phil Collins 'cos he'd performed at BOTH venues (1st at Wembley Stadium then at JFK Stadium after hoping the Concord), Mick Jagger with Tina Turner, Madonna, the Hooters, Simple Minds, Elton John & George Michael, & Power Station. Duran Duran stuck out but in a really bad way as their perforce was the WORST of the entire day 😖. Part of the issues of that day was the feedback from the audio which caused havoc with a lot of the performances INCLUDING Queen's 4th song AND Freddie/Bri's encore performance later that same night. It was how Queen pushed thru those feedbacks that made then shine that day/night.

Desperate Mohammedan the World's Strongest Arab 💁🏾‍♀️ Some of these ppl had given their contribution to the cause via the recorded records. Still others had engagements/tours goin’ on. None of the acts that were on the bill were paid and many had to come out of their own pockets to pay for their expenses to travel to these venues (Wembley/JFK)...take Phil Collins for example. He’d paid to travel on the Concord jet himself so that he could perform at both arenas. THAT’s generous of him to not only donate his time but to dig deep into his pockets too. Some of the other acts that you’ve presented also didn’t believe in the cause OR felt too above such an event since they weren’t being paid. Whatever their reason(s) for not showing up to perform that day remains to be seen✌🏾.

@@Motown-1966 The point I was making was simply that the claim greatest stars of the time is an exaggeration. Anyhow as far as I remember: Michael Jackson had other commitments and hadn't time to rehearse. AC/DC gave a unanimous "don't do charity gigs". Bruce Springsteen had just ended a tour at Wembley a few days previous, was asked to appear at London but chose to go home to his family instead. Frankie Goes To Hollywood a majority no vote. Stevie Wonder an initial yes but then got all pissy because there weren't enough black artists. Huey Lewis and the News an initial yes but cancelled as, like Frank Zappa (asked to play as he was a very popular live act and would give the bill a little cred with "alternative" music fans), did research and decided they weren't confident the money would be spent correctly (they were proven right) Tears for Fears had to cancel at short notice as several members of their backing band didn't want to play for free. Prince had retired from playing live but sent a video that no one except MTV bothered showing. Roger Waters offered to play Live Aid but was told he could only if he brought at least David Gilmour with him and played under the name Pink Floyd. They all said no. Def Leppard's drummer had recently been seriously injured in a car crash so despite being asked they couldn't appear.

@@TheIndianFrontierYT Yes, there is a good music around but you have to dig deep to find it. I find it in places like libraries or here on YT. You won't find it listening to commercial radio, you will have to wait a couple of hours before a half decent song comes along, who wants to do that? Way way back, let's say the early to mid 70's, you would turn the radio on, a good song would be on, then a great song, and then a crappy song. Those days are gone.
