Drummer Bob Rosengarden describes the good fortune that occurred early in his career, and shares stories about studio work, Benny Goodman, and the "bean counters" who took over the recording business.

So great! So I started gigging at 15 the month he joined Basie. 6 months later I saw Duffy with Basie. Blew me away as a 16 year old by then. Met him in 89 when he was with Basie led my Frank Foster. What a magnificent drummer and sweet guy.

Great band with the Dick Cavett show. One of the best bands ever. Bobby had the 'beat!'

Charismatic and soft-spoken, and a serious pro on the drums when New York was really New York - all the studio / TV musicians were great jazz swingers.

Excellent point. The big band experience that many of them had prepared them well for reading all types of charts and being punctual in the studio setting. Monk

I love watching the video of Woody Allen playing the clarinet on the Dick Cavette show around 1970, especially the drumming. After 2 days of internet searching, I found out today that it was Bob. I actually bought a used set of drums this past Sunday because Bob made it look like so much fun !

My into to Bob Rosengarden was via the Dick Cavett shows. The band was small, tight but really top drawer, to compete with the other shows of the time. One thing that stood out were his ad libs to host, Cavett. I just waited for "Bob" to do his thing almost as much as the host. He's was really a funny effer and they played like a tornado. Then this writer learned some musical skills and a crash course in the biz. Different world then. Just a fine interview. Thank you.

WAS THERE EVER ANY ANIMOSITY BETWEEN BOB AND SOL GUBIN AS TO WHOM WAS THE BETTER DRUMMER WHILE BOTH WERE IN NY CITY??

I am not aware that there was any competition or professional jealousy between Bob and Sol. Incidentally, Bob informed me that he preferred being referred to as Bob rather than Bobby, as was common on liner notes and references.
