Yes my art teacher was very annoying and indecisive and I was bob ross by pure chance on netflix last year and now painting is my favorite hobby and I love it, it's what I do in my free time and it makes me happy

And he tries to walk you through it......I had a college professor , a Vietnam Vet....who was of the same manner. We had more time...because we would be able to drift after hours time. But he would try to help you with mechanics.....and teach you.

Bob Ross is a National Tresure! He was a real inspirational Human. Anyone that has anything negative to say about Bob is a true NON talent.. Some of Bob's originals are selling in 2024 for over 6 figures. I am sure that Bob would tell you today that he would rather be known for being a fantastic Human over a fantastic Painter any day.

What Bob Ross gave to the non artist was the courage to pick up the brush and try. You said your professor said his subjects were tacky, what about his? Ross simply pushed people to try with no condemnation. As he famously said, there's only "Happy Accident".

Well the title is in jest. Obviously, Bob had a huge impact on artists just starting out to try with simple techniques. I think my art professor was jealous to be honest. LOL

Yep, how my art professor was. He didnt judge on what you produced, more so on you were actually trying. The most gratifying effect I had was a fellow student, did a charcoal of her....she loved it. I thought it sucked...but we came BFFs after it.

Well, my art professor did do his own abstract in class, which was stellar. I think his jealousy was over how simple landscapes were popular as a teaching style vs. the latest and greatest. Of course, most people just want to learn a landscape for pleasure, so I'm not surprised Bob Ross was more popular. He just wasn't stuck up like many art teachers are.

The man knew how to teach. I did one of his tutorials after my grandmother bought me one of those kidy paint sets on a whim at the supermarket when I was around 10. They weren't even oil based, they were those cheapo water based ones you can get anywhere for 10$ or so. I followed along as best I could, knowing full well I wasn't using the right paint but... and I would like to mention that I have *zero* talent whatsoever, I have to practice 10 times more than others to get the same level of skill normally. (I'm a logical type, math I can do, art is confusing and hard). That day I painted a cabin in a snowy field that *wasn't half bad.* I've never painted as well before or since. The man had a way with words and demonstration to be sure.

Ross will forever be an American icon. He had a 20 yr career in the Air Force and completely changed his life to encourage the art of painting to an entire nation. He inspired the artist in all of us and continues to do so even though he's gone.

Bob Ross was and still is an inspirational entity in the vein of Mr. Rogers, and Jim Henson. Pure good vibes. He was a lucky guy to have a son who was interested in his vision. His son is lucky to have had a Dad with such good intentions. A great family legacy that will live on for a VERY long time.

The reason Bob Ross wore an Afro initially was because he was low on funds and that was how he was able to save money. He had his hair permed and didn’t have to worry about a monthly haircut. This info was provided by his business partner. Once he became famous his PR team advised against dumping the Afro because it had become his trademark. He was often referred to as “that artist guy on tv, the one with the Afro.”

1/11/1983 first show aired in Virginia. WNVC PBS station. Took his classes in 1983 there. Then he went to Muncie, Indiana. Died 7/4/1995 . Painted on tv for only 11 yrs. Had produced 31 seasons, 13 episodes each. He did 3 paintings for each episode. The reason he was able to get the painting done in a short time.

Oh yes. The entertainment factor can not be stressed enough. He was also one of the first on TV to do painting live. I don't think he would have had the same impact coming out 20 years later when YT painting started.

Fyi Bob Ross's first tv painting sold (after he passed away) for over $9 million ... Most are owned by a company in his name and an original rarely if ever comes up for sale.

What a lot of people don't know was that the primary purpose of that show wasn't to bring in viewers to the channel- that was part of it, of course- but it's true purpose was to sell paint, lol. That's why they listed all the colors across the screen at the beginning, and why Bob kept referring to their specific names like "Titanium White" as he was painting. Also he hated that goofy hair, I forget why he rocked it in the first place but he only kept it permed because it became associated with the brand, lol It was still a wholesome show and Bob was in it for the right reasons, his love of painting, but I think it's funny that per usual there was a serious business side to it that most people aren't aware of

Very cool insight as to why Bob was so soft spoken in his videos. His approach really opened up a lot of kids to the magic of painting and what you could do if you allowed yourself to experiment and not self judge. Its easy to self-judge as an artist as it takes a long time sometimes to reach easily sellability.

We have a painter in Montréal,Quebec who did a tv show in the eighties ( in French) it was a bit like Bob Ross, is name was Charles Garo, Tatossian he was very popular on tv., you can find some of his vied on RU-vid but it's in french..

I actually enjoyed the episode with his son, I agree with your criticism about him, but I also feel that he got much better a couple of minutes in, when he got a bit more comfortable with the situation. Cool analysis though. I have no intention of painting anything any time soon, but I enjoy picking up on his techniques, but above all, I just enjoy watching him paint and relax.

You don't know crap. Bob Started in the mid 80s. on TV. I know , I bought one pf his first starter kits 1988. He was a God send to millions of wanna be artist., that didn't have money or the time to attend fancy smacy classes. God bless Bob Ross RIP...he helped me through a lot of tough times. I'm 69 and still watch and paint along with him.

Everyone grew up with him and he's a national treasure. He might paint the same kind of shit over and over, with some exceptions if you watch the whole series but he encouraged generations to pick up paint. His narrating style is always known to be tranquil for many listeners long before podcasts. Plus he was on tv in the 80's early 90s, not the 70's.

Never knew his son was a painter as well. Cannot be easy living in the shadow of your father and always being compared. Especially when we are all individuals. The fro was quite common. The drummers Don Brewer and Don Henley come to mind. I wasa AZ cowboy that always wore my Western hat and with hair about as long as Bob Ross's son's. And I also had a permanent It wasn't as Curly as his but.. it wasn't straight either. Lol perm would last about 6 months. In the early seventies I went to the local Art Studio and ask the instructor if he knew someone to paint a wall mural. They used a similar technique but a lot more detail and they spent close to a week doing it. He went through nearly $80 worth of oil paint alone. Minimum wage at the time was a $1.40 an hour. Lol But hey when he was done I had a detailed picture of Havasu falls in the Grand Canyon. 🚜🤠🐂

For the program, each painting is done at least 3 times. The first one is very generic and missing a lot of detail. This is used as a reference for the recording. Then, he does the painting you see in the recording.. This is usually done in about half an hour. Finally, there's the one that you see in the credits. These ones take either 3-4 hours, or maybe a few days, depending on the detail.

Great background on the process Phillip. So different than nowadays with artists just uploading to YT on their own: no TV, no TV politics, no TV editors, no Ads to worry about (if you're small). The way it was shot is amazing considering there's so little to work from before this as far as video/TV to copy.

@@ShawNshawN Back then, you pretty much had to take classes to learn how to oil paint. Bob was taught by a man named Bill Alexander. Bill hosted the predecessor to "The Joy of Painting". It was called "The Magic of Oil Painting". It debuted in the mid '70s and, ended in 1983, shortly before "The Joy of Painting" began. Unfortunately, there was a bit of drama between them when Bob passed away. That's probably why Bob didn't talk about Bill much, towards the end of "The Joy of Painting". But, these things happen sometimes.

I'm pretty sure his painting subjects were based on his time living in Alaska. Also he was fast because he only had a certain amount of time because he painted for TV. They only had like 30 mins to do it. I think he said he had painted each painting like 2 or 3 times before he did the TV version. So that may have helped him be quicker. Bob Ross inspired and still inspired so many people to even just start painting.

You know you knock him for how he is actually slow there are others that are now faster - For the average viewer this is incredible fast -also the multiple brushes is a fantastic idea because it would be boring to wait for brush cleaning - He is still incredible - Ahead of his time- Easy for you to critique - You come across as an ahole with your toungue in cheek I'm better than he is...

1:29 not true! He hates the afro thats true but its not fake. When he started doing the joy of painting he had the afro but wanted to get rid of it but he was to busy to get a hair cut. Then he blew up and the afro was kinda his trade mark, logo every thing. So he couldn’t get rid of it. He kept the hair and hated it but kept it for the show. (So not fake, just wasn’t very happy about it). Before he made the show he had indeed the hair you where talking about.

Think Steve Ross has said that his heart wasn't really into it. Bill Alexander (his mentor) was better, but I remember watching Bob Ross in the day and he has inspired many others.

Fair point David. The main thing I look for is quality, impact and skills in these types of reactions. I still stand that Bob had a tremendous impact on all future painters, but could have been a bit better maybe at color choices sometimes.

Ok i heard you say you are an artist .. i know the bio on you says people like Tom Cruise follow you ... so i looked up some of your art work - definitely more modern avante garde as is the style nowadays. As someone who still likes more classical paintings by Constable and Turner, Monet etc. i find my taste (and i know that everyones taste is different which makes the art world varied and fantastic) prefers the Bob Ross aesthetic (and i know it is not high end - and there is no pretense as such). Plus knowing that it is intended to help viewers begin painting makes it more appealing. After all the show was called The Joy of Painting.

I think the thing missed was...why he was so fast...he knew exactly what he wanted. In my art classes, many times....you didnt know what you were trying to do.

yes, he was amazingly fast. I think though if you paint every day fast and not focused on precise details, perfect colors, etc. it can be done. Another modern take is Jose Trujillo. He can do a good painting in about 15 minutes each time.

Bill Alexander, bob's mentor, was better. Bob's style seems a little too touched up. I like the looser semi-impressionistic end of Alexander's paintings.

Bob Ross never passed his painting off as a masterpiece painting... It was all about the joy of painting... It all way annoyed me how "artists. Claim he's not a real painter. They try to sell a painting make by shooting a paint ball gun as real art. Your just to stupid to understand

While I don't care for his formulaic style because it has no soul, his backstory is truly amazing how he transformed himself from hard ass military instructor into the most lovable tv personality you could imagine. On his own time through sheer force of will he learned his craft and touched so many lives with his personality.
