Bob Ryan is a living history book on the NBA, Boston Celtics and the dynastic years of the franchise He can tell stories about the prime of Larry Bird & Kevin McHale careers because he lived it with them.
Bob is joined by podcast co-hosts, and NBA Insider Jeff Goodman, and former NBC veteran, Gary Tanguay. The three always veer back to the history of basketball at some point during each show. It's that segment I am always chomping at the bit to rip apart and get to you, my fellow basketball history enthusiasts and they've proved to be some of our biggest hitting segments on this very young channel.
Stephen Curry haven broken Ray Allen's NBA 3-point all-time record this week, would naturally have Tanguay and Goodman drawing comparisons to today's dynamic stars and those that played in the golden decade of hoops. So, no surprise that Bird's name was bound to come up. Possibly the surprise of the week was Bob telling Goodman and Tanguay about how McHale, the unlikely long distance bomber, started to launch 3 point shots with some consistent frequency.
Find out what.

I disagree with Ryan that Bird would have more trouble getting his shot off. Bird has the height, the fall away, and the shot mechanics. He wouldn't have to waste energy dribbling out of traffic as much as the shorter Curry does. The 3 point shot has turned basketball into pretty much a game of Horse, which gets boring, after a while.
@Edd1e8
@Edd1e8 2 года назад
Plus, Bird’s jumper was tougher to block as he often released the ball behind his head creating natural separation between him and the defender. Curry’s shot starts much lower and he makes up for it with an ultra quick release Either way, Bird’s decision making was his biggest asset. It’s unfair to say a classic player wouldn’t do well today due to the athleticism of today’s players. That’s bad assumption because if you’re bringing a player over to today’s era, you also have to give them today’s conditioning and sports therapy methods. It’s not like Bird would skip that stuff lol
@wmden1
@wmden1 2 года назад
@@Edd1e8 I probably haven't watched enough of these videos. I sure haven't watched any of today's live games. From what I have seen the biggest difference between today and the 1980s is the ball handling. I think the "impressive" ball handling and related aspects of getting a shot off, are directly attributable to the traveling and ball carrying that is not called, even if a player takes 4 steps before shooting, depending on who the player is. The medical care is better, now, but there were some very athletic players, in the past. Wilt is probably the prime example, but he wasn't the only one. Just a few are; David Thompson, Dr.J, George Gerving, Walt Frazier, John Havlicek, Bill Russel, and many more, but I figure you get my drift.

I disagree with Durant clising on Bird. Did Bob Ryan forgot what non hand-checking, Celtic defense did to Durant's game in last year's playoffs? Now imagine if he had to face a Dr. J led 76ers, or Magic's lakers and Isiah's Detroit defenses through the 80's, with no travelling, moving screens allowed? I'm sure is numbers would've plunged deeply and today's top five conversation wouldn't occur.

Bob Ryan has definitely lost his mind. Kevin Durant is top 10????... Let's get something straight.... Today you cannot hand-check a player like you could back in the '80s.... You can barely touch a player today... without getting called for a foul... Do you have any idea what bird and MHale would do today??.... THEY WOULD ABSOLUTELY DOMINATE.... Kevin McHale is probably the greatest low post player in the history of the NBA with the possible exception of jabbar. He would destroy the league today because today you would not be able to touch him or hand check him at the low post, because if you did you would get called for a foul. And Bob Ryan says that today everybody has to be three-point shooter. This man has definitely lost his mind. I cannot believe he asked the question "what would a team do with Kevin McHale today"? And how does he know that McHale would not develop into a great three-point shooter or at least a decent three-point shooter, if he tremendously worked at it with the proper coaching and motivation. Great athletes evolve... That's what makes them great. magic Johnson was not a three-point shooter either... So going by Bob Ryan's logic, no team would want Magic Johnson today either or Moses Malone or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Wilt Chamberlain or Karl Malone, etc , etc. just like they wouldn't want Kevin mchale. I guess Bob Ryan has unfortunately entered the realms of senility.

Durant is great and the best player right now. But threatening Larry? Why? Durant has shot 44% from midrange, while Larry made 51%, while the majority of his shots were from midrange (60% of his shots). So Larry was a better jump shooter, a better passer, better rebounder, and his defensive rating is way better than Durant's. So what are we discussing?

The 3point shot and the total lack of traveling calls have co-contributed to the downfall of the game as it was initially conceived.Larry Siegfried made a living shooting jump shots from behind a screen,foul line extended.He couldn't make an NBA team today.Can you imagine what basketball would be like if Kareem had never had to develop a sky hook or Cowens a jump hook.How about Clyde Lovelette, who could hit hook shots from the corner.He didn't (couldn't) need to jump as a result.No more back to the basket play from the likes of McHale or Chamberlain.Now.a player drives down the lane without a thought of passing, jumps to the moon and if the dunk isn't there, flips it out to a team mate who selfishly fires up a tres.I don't watch the NBA anymore.The only way to fix this is to decrease the diameter of the basket by 3 to 4 inches.Then let's see how many 3's are attempted.

I agree, especially with your first statement. I hadn't thought of reducing the size of the hoop, but it would certainly bring back the post up game, and the natural role of the big men. Bird and McHale could play well in any Era. Great players can. If they showed up and played their style now the league would be in trouble. I don't think any player today can play the post like McHale. Birds midrange game would be a killer. Those two paired up would be hard to deal with. Fundamentals beats athleticism over the long run. The 3-point shot has not 'ruined' basketball. Rather it has opened it up and made the court bigger. Teams have a much larger space to guard. That is actually refreshing. In Bird's day it was "points in the paint" and games were dominated by Abdul-Jabbar, Malone, Shaq, and others. Now, there is still a place for those big guys, but there is also a place for the talented point guard who can distribute AND shoot the 3. Just look at the tapes. See how bunched up the games in the 80s were, and how wide open they are now. Bird understood the value of the 3-point shot better than just about anyone. He was great at it. And when he was making them (so easily it seemed) it tended to demoralize the other team. That was great as far as he was concerned. And now we are seeing the talented forwards who can get to the rim, defend well, AND shoot 3 point shots. Great. The defense has to plan for that possibility. That is one reason Bird was so successful. No one really could guard him beyond the arc. I love Bird. Favorite player of all time. But Curry has proved that a much smaller player can be even more dangerous because of that 3-point shot, distribute to the open guy, and he has the 'handles' that make other players fall on their butt.
@johnnyreed8537
@johnnyreed8537 2 года назад
Bird's era was much more talented in the fundamentals and basics of basketball. The give and go, backdoor passes, pick and rolls, playing in and out using the big man etc.. The 3 pt shot is the game today which sometimes makes the game unwatchable. Teams shooting 40-50-60 threes a game just takes away the purity of the game. And all of the modern big guys camp out around the 3 pt line whereas protecting the rim and grabbing rebounds is secondary. I'll take the old NBA any day!

The three-point shot should be eliminated for two quarters in a game preferably the first half. You can re-implement it in the second half. Here's a crazier idea. The shot clock can be divided either by 3 or by 4 if it's 24 seconds. For the first six or eight seconds have the area of the post be worth three points and two points everything outside of that range. This will incentivize the fast break or post play. For the following intervals of six or eight seconds you keep moving it further out until it gets to three point range. A good place to test this theory would be the All-Star game if people still care about it.

I have an idea about how to reduce the reliance teams have on taking so many three pointers. Right now the three pointer is worth a full 50% more than a two pointer. That's just way too high a percentage and teams gear their entire offenses around taking threes. How about reducing it to a two-and-a-half pointer so it becomes only 25% more than a two pointer? (I know it would be ridiculous to have scores with half-points like "final score 102.5 to 101" but maybe you could make the two pointer a four pointer and then make the 2.5 pointer a 5 pointer?) My other idea is to eliminate the corner three which is closer than a normal three since the arc of the three point line straightens out when it gets to the corners. Just keep the arc going, don't straighten it out, and let the three point line hit the sideline out of bounds line. No more having guys park themselves in the corner waiting for a three point attempt!

The NBA should put in a limit of 15 made 3 pointers per game for each team. After a team makes 15 3s, all baskets after that would count as two. Would help balance out the game, plus add an interesting strategy element: does a coach save his threes more for the second half of a game, etc? I think they should try it. The game now is a slave to the analytics: Jack up 3s all day. Boring. Btw, I’ve been watching the nba regularly since 1976.

2 three pointers are worth 3 two pointers. If they changed the scoring to where a regular basket is worth 3 points and beyond the arc would be worth 4 points it would fix everything. 2 beyond the arc baskets would be worth 8 and 3 regular baskets would be worth 9 and this would shift the power a little bit back into the importance of making a regular bucket

No, they couldn't play today. They would foul out in the first quarter. Now they call a foul for a stank eye.

Right about one thing; you can't really compare the two time periods of basketball...the NBA today sucks and having "great players" in a fked up game doesn't mean much, does it?

They're placing too much importance on stats! Why don't we start focusing on teaching these guys the fundamentals of basketball! Before there even allowed on the court In the NBA! What we have are bunch of athletes. The greater percentage of them ...have no idea how to actually play the game!

Bird would average 42-16-12, in todays NBA. Easy.

The threes today are outta control to the point it's ridiculous, it's not even good basketball, I wouldn't want to see Bird and McHale playing today in this shit league, they were perfect right where they played in when NBA basketball was fffffffffffffantastic!!!!!!

Well, I own the company and i don’t know Gary’s wife or her financial status. I was honored to have him join the team and he allows bob/Jeff to play their more natural analyst opinion roles and Gary directs traffic like the Pro he is. I’ve been a fan of Gary’s since 2007 or so. He’s extremely talented whether u like his opinions or not.
