Highlights of my favorite player, Bobby Sura, over his career.
Robert Sura Jr. (born March 25, 1973, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania) is an American former professional basketball player who last played for the Houston Rockets in the NBA. At 6'5" (1.96 m), 200 lb (91 kg), he played as a guard.
Sura played in high school at G.A.R. Memorial in Wilkes-Barre. He had a high game of 69 while leading G.A.R. to a remarkable streak of 86 consecutive league victories.
After high school, Sura played basketball for Florida State University, playing on the same team as fellow NBA players Charlie Ward and Sam Cassell.
Sura was drafted 17th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1995 NBA Draft. His best season with the Cavaliers was his last, averaging 13.8 points per game during the 1999-2000 season. He was then traded to the Golden State Warriors, and has also played for the Detroit Pistons, the Atlanta Hawks and the Houston Rockets.
With the Hawks, he gained attention by almost posting three straight triple-double games - the third was subsequently taken away from him by the league when he purposely missed a layup to get his 10th rebound. The rule is that passing to yourself off the backboard is a missed field goal attempt, rather than an offensive rebound, so making the putback does not count as an assist. With the Rockets, Sura was considered by many analysts to be a key to their regular season success until he suffered an injury that has kept him from playing ever since.
Sura competed in the 3-point tournament during the All-Star Weekend, as well as the Slam Dunk competition. Sura's career averages include 8.6 points per game. In the 2004-05 season, his last season due to injury, he averaged 10.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.5 assists.
Sura's Florida State jersey was retired in 2007, where he is the school's all time leading scorer.
On October 29, 2007, Sura, and three other Houston Rockets were cut from the team.
"We have so many nice guys on our team with so many great personalities; [Sura] is not one of those guys. Bob doesn't care about anybody on the opposing team. He just comes to play. He doesn't care about officials or if things aren't going his way. I mean, he's a dog, man. He's a true warrior. I found that out when he dislocated his fingers (in Miami). It looked nasty. I didn't think he could play. He suited up the next game (in Boston) and was real effective."
-- Tracy McGrady on teammate Bobby Sura

I fell in love with his style of play his sophmore year at fsu & followed him evr since. hard core. i thought id share a true story since every one who has commented seems to have the same type of appreciation for sura as i do. when i was 15 and playing hs ball my older sister contactd bob thru FSU info and actually got a hold of him. she told him that she had a lil brother who adored him and that my bday was coming up, and that it would make my year if he would surprise me wit a call. he did.

He has played the same way since HS at GAR in Wilkes-Barre Pa. I actually played with him in a summer league where I'm from and it was packed every night. It was a highlight film every game. But, he is a good guy and a great basketball player. Doesn't surprise me he made that call at all.

I'm 6'8 and played college ball. I guarded Bob in pick-up games since he was a freshman in HS. As a HS senior he was standing flat-footed behind me. They threw the ball above the BOX! He went up and grabbed it with both hands and slammed it. I'd played against pros and never seen anyone jump that high without taking a step to gather themselves. I'd say he could go straight up and get both palms above the box from a standstill. He was about 6'3'' or 6'4''.
@Keepdapocket
@Keepdapocket 6 лет назад
mydogspet you're almost right we were teammates in high school. I was the starting point guard. I was 5'7. In practice we would have jumping contest. What you say is partly true. My goal would be to be able to take just one step and hang on the rim with both hands. His goal was to get both hands at the middle of the block from a standstill. Our coach sometimes would out powder on our hands (well, not mine because I was only going to the rim) to see.

I loved watching Sura play, especially at FSU when they'd get an ESPN game. Only a handful of white guys that had this kind of game over the years. The 6'4 slashing guard, big time hops, pull up J's and some flash to his game has never been seen much from a white dude. Rex Chapman probably being the most recognized. I would love to have seen sura play in high school or even seen a scouting report on him like you see these days all over the place for high school kids.

Bobby suffered from “didn’t live in the scranton area” & “didn’t stick around” Was from a Luzerne county school & not blaming him/faulting but then he went to fsu (& again not faulting him) but then you look at a guy like Gerry Mac who of course had natty title + play with Melo, but Sura & what he did is pretty much not spoken about in NEPA Anyway, they caught yet another killer in NEPA First Eric Frein & now this Idaho guy Wtf NEPA!
