How GOOD Was Chauncey Billups Actually? 

Better than what the stats say. A true PG who made his guys better...... he's the reason Melo ever made a WCF.

One of the single greatest leaders ever. A man that exemplifies how stats don't show a player's true value. I'd love to have him leading my team

We need another like the 2004 Pistons. No egomaniacs superstars, just good players with great chemistry.

Actually Billups deserves to be a Hall of Famer more than many others... he played for his team and not for himself, he won an NBA championship, he was good all around and not only a good scorer or good passer, he played the best kind of basketball which is WINNING basketball using his cerebral power and good basketball fundamentals... Chauncey was one of my favorite players growing up and I really admire him both as a player and as a man... when you hear him speak you can tell at once "this is a wise man... I have to listen to what he has to say"... that can be said for only a handful of players in the history of the game... I hope they do put Chauncey in the HoF someday... it would be a shame to leave him out... he did lead a truly great TEAM in Detroit... and they were a TEAM... no stars, no divas, 30ppg guys... they beat everyone by showing them that 5 heads are better than one... I hated them when I was young because they played to badass hardcore defensive basketball and I couldn't appreciate it (even though I loved Chauncey who was clutch and made huge shots) but now I can tell that those Pistons were one of the most legit teams of all time... they were a BADASS team... it's one of the only teams ever that you could tell if they played ANY team from ANY era they would give them a run for their money... yeah... even MJ's Bulls or Larry's Celtics or Magic's showtime Lakers... those Pistons did not give up without a fight... if you wanted to win you had to be prepared for A FIGHT... we're talking bruises here... Chauncey, Rasheed, Big Ben (BIG BEN IS WALLACE PEOPLE... NOT SIMMONS), RIP Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince... all great... Rasheed, Big Ben and Cauncey would deserve HoF because they were all underrated and really GREAT players... yeah, even Big Ben... All time great defenders should be recognized too... there are other things besides points in basketball... Loved watching Chauncey play. He was like a maestro of that whole team. One word I think of when I think of Chauncey is balanced. He could do everything well and have no flaws. Some other players are great at one thing but at a sacrifice of something else. Nash was a great shooter but poor defender for instance. Billups wasn’t the best at anything but had no holes in his game. Could get to the rim, shot the three, shot mid range, pass and play defense. What more can you ask for in a point guard 🤷🏽‍♂️

As a die-hard Pistons fan going back to the bad boy era I can say that Billups was criminally underrated. Being a PG for Larry Brown is never an easy gig but Billups took the coaching and embraced defense and the results speak for themselves. Sheed was the most talented, Big Ben was the heart and soul but Chauncey was the straw that stirred the drink. Dumars had many great moves in the early 2000s but signing Billups helped being it all together.

I was in middle school when the Pistons made there finals run. My family watched every game that was on fox sports Detroit years before the championship. We struggled with the Nets and Pacers for a while. Chauncey was the man for us. He banked a 3 in from half court to send a game into OT and I’ll always remember how awesome that was. I have a billups and Rasheed Wallace jersey kid size extra large from that time 💯👏

Him and Rip were a good guard duo

Billups is one of my favorite pgs of all time. Whereas most other great scoring pgs of his era used speed and attacked the basket, he would use his excellent 3 pt shot and postup game to get what he wanted.

One the greatest moments of pure joy I've ever seen in another person was when Chauncey won finals mvp. You could just tell when he lifted that trophy that a great catharsis was taking place and it was wonderful to behold. He earned that trophy (though a major case could be made for Big Ben) and it was written all over his face in that moment

Never watched the NBA around that time but I got a lot of respect for Chauncey Billups. A true leader, great basketball IQ, and well rounded. He's one of those players that his greatness and impact goes beyond the stats.

Chauncey was always a good shooter since middle school, and a great athlete. Coming out at Denver Colorado he didn't have the competition quality that he had in the NBA, but he adapted his game.

the 04 pistons lineup have my fav archetype of every position. post up guard, mid range shooter, defensive wing, jump shooting big, undersized rim protector. and they were clutch, defense oriented, and were underdogs who played with a chip on their shoulder. fav and most respectable team of all time imo,

I was 21 when they won the chip and I'm so happy that time when they finally ripped the hearts of the lakers. Even better cos I won $500 that time on a bet. They knew Kobe would be upset for not getting his touches. It was magical seeing them fall apart like a house of cards.

Billups was my very first favorite player in any sport ever. As a little kid he inspired me with his story of redemption and never giving up. Oh also he wore number 1, that made him all the more cool to me when I was a baby Pistons fan. Had a jersey of his and everything. Truly a player near and dear to my heart

When he first got into the league, I knew he would someday be an all-star. My dad and uncle's said I didn't know basketball. Guess they were wrong. Said the same about Rondo. Take a hi IQ point guard over the skills and athletics any day. Smart PG will raise your entire team's level.

Hes one of my top 3 favorite pgs. I usually lean towards highlight players like VC, Tmac, Iverson, etc... but Billups is amazing all around. Cant hate him either hes too nice

Reminds me a bit of Kyle Lowry if Kyle Lowry were a lot more clutch. Also kind of bouncing around teams til he found a good fit not the most explosive but also a good leader. I like Chauncey a lot and I think he deserves to be in the HOF, also hell of an analyst on ESPN. You can really tell his basketball iq was the reason he was so successful (not to knock his shooting and defensive abilities)

Chauncey Billups is one of the most underrated point guards of his era but he still managed to compete well against the likes of Tony Parker, Jason Kidd and Steve Nash in their primes plus the leadership is something that I love about him which is why he's one of my favorite players ever. If you need leadership, the ability to draw fouls with his craftiness and someone who can rely on with the game on the line, Billups can definitely provide that. Oh that 2004 title run is just legendary and frankly I don't think we'll ever see another team that wins a championship despite lacking a true superstar.

Favorite guard in my teenage years

He was kind of the prototype for the modern point guard, a guy who can create for himself and others at a high level. Damn shame nobody knew how to use him until he got to Detroit

He, with his teammates, made me a believer in 2004 and caused me to jump ship from being a Lakers fan to a Pistons fan. Despite the team not reaching the same success, 2004 makes me cherish that brand of basketball and keeps me sticking around, hoping to witness it again. Great video as always, Andy!

The 2003-2007 Pistons and the 2001-2004 Sacramento Kings were my favorite teams to watch back in the day even though I have always been a knicks fan. Such great pure team basketball.

He and Cassell were both very nice, all around pgs in the 2000s era. And they could play in any system. Guys like this are underrated.

How him or no of the 04 pistons are in the HOF is crazy. His numbers don't tell the story. He got a ton of Hockey assist and got us in our offense so efficiently.

While I love the bad boys, Billups era Pistons were incredibe to watch. I loved going to the home games and the finals were unreal. Chauncy always seemed chill and in total control at the same time.

CB was the best player I got in NBA 2K20 and he was incredible. Whenever I needed to be sure of a win, I brought CB in!

He still is good...just older.

What goes unnoticed is what happened to the teams that he left. Rip, Tayshaun, Sheed became less efficient, and Detroit had a losing record and got destroyed in the first round. Sheed had to go to Boston the following season while Rip would go to the Bulls during Rose's MVP year. Rodney Stuckey once said that the loss of Billups affected his development. Billups was the exact kind of player who can keep a locker room firm so they remain focused on doing what they are supposed to do. In Denver, his influence in the locker room caused Melo and JR to play better by not messing the flow of the offense. That Nuggets team played slower than what a typical George Karl offense would suggest, but they were able to execute well in the clutch and in the halfcourt which made them go deep in the playoffs that season. Billups was never the kind of player who can get you off your chair when you see his stats, but how he impacts the team should be enough to consider him around top 20-30

He was a true floor general. With the defensive anchor Ben Wallace, perimeter lockdown Tayshaun Prince, lethal clutch scorer Rip Hamilton and the perfect complimentary piece Sheed, they could've won a couple more rings if the team stayed together for longer, or grouped earlier.

That half court shot in the playoffs against the Nets in 03 or 02 has to be the most unsung clutch buzzerbeater of all time!

The pistons didn’t “LOSE” Ben Wallace, we refused to match the 4 year $60 million contract the bulls offered. Not resigning Ben in my opinion was the reason the pistons didn’t make the finals in 07 and lost to Lebron.

It was definitely interesting to be familiar with him as one of the top prospects in the draft, who got picked #3, only to sort of drop off the map for a number of years in terms of stardom, and then emerge as the floor general on that great Pistons team. A classic story.
