In this web extra, one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir, and singer-songwriter John Mayer, who is joining Weir as part of a new ensemble called Dead & Company, talk to Anthony Mason about reinventing the Dead's music, and for Mayer's part, learning how to "keep up with the train."

There will never be a new Jerry Garcia. But there is John Mayer. Unreal. Coming from a true deadhead, this band fucking rocks.
@queenfan45
@queenfan45 7 лет назад
It reminds me a bit of what happened with Queen. After the death of Jerry/Freddie, the band just went "now what?" and shuffled around with various guests, but never capturing what they did. Queen found Paul Rodgers and had a big tour, but it didn't have the camp of Queen we know and love. Then along comes a young guy, Mid-Late 30s, fascinated with the music of these legends. He starts working with them, and they slowly stretch their legs. They slowly begin with a tour, then get bigger and bigger, as the young and old get together and create a sound that isn't what they had in their glory days. But something that's extremely familiar but very new.
@queenfan45
@queenfan45 7 лет назад
And to further the comparison, both John Deacon and Phil Lesh bowed out before picking up the new kid.

I think he gets it. 'Thank you for taking me there'. He knows he can't recreate Jerry, Jerry's personality was too integrated into the music, but he can take you to the precipice of Jerry's Cannon, and say, 'Here, look at this vastness, and stand with me in awe, and here, look what I can play to pay homage. Wasn't that amazing? "

The bit about john saying "you have to be tall and short, play a long solo, but not a *lonnnng* solo. it has to be blue and red" can be said for any band, and is an excellent piece of advice for aspiring musicians. there is a balance (or a mix ;) lol) of all of the smaller parts. play as one, be one, know your place, be humble, but be inspiring to your bandmates and audience

Man, I love me some Mayer!! Big time! I was worried that those who worship at the alter of Garcia wouldn't even give him the time of day, but man does this band kick! John is a real treasure. People sometimes don't give mim credit but he delivers every time. Whether getting the title of "master guitarist" from Mr. Eric Clapton for his playing on his JJ Cale tribute, John's beautiful solos behind Leon Russel at his Hall of Fame induction, or his solo performance of Human Nature at Michael Jackson's memorial, Mayer always rises to the occasion with taste and grace. He knows just what to play and just what not to. I'll always be a fan of his.

I was surprised and amazed at how good this band is and how much I liked Mayer in this band. My husband got me into the Dead in the 1980s, which was already past their prime and I never really got it. Now I get it. I get it because this band has not looked like it's having this kind of fun in years. Call it sacrilege. If my husband were alive he'd say I was full of it. But give it a listen with an open mind. I just watched this after seeing these two lovely gentlemen and rest of the crew in Boulder, Colorado. Man… when he talks about bringing people to an experience. I have always listened to the Dead, but when I went to see them in Boulder and see what Shakedown Street and all the culture was about… this brought a whole new light to what the Grateful Dead means to so many people and myself. John will never take Jerry’s spot, of course not. At 75 years old I have never seen Bobby so alive and full of new breath. This was one of the best experiences of my life. I hope people understand this, how important this is that they're talking about,for without that there can never be any good, just a bunch of crap that everyone else has already done, and Who wants to listen to that Dead & Company hope you will be here for some time

Yes. It's very heartening. The body of work, the way it continues to play out and forward. At dead50 it seemed like yes, they were (naturally) wound up - the whole thing was hyped (mostly in the best ways) but much like they were also really trying, endeavering in Chicago to lay out the...code, the DNA for the GD experience/experiment/adventure, get it documented in it's most current developed form so it could live on. Laying it out to culture, humanity. While phenomenal, it also came out a little..clumsily as it usually does when trying to pin it down. But then to hear 'em play with John, and here talk about it in the now, with an eye toward.....futher.....wow. This is truly the most lucid stuff anybody in/around the dead has managed to verbalize. It ain't over yet! As in Bobby's dream, we may not live to see the end of this and that idea is a big ray of light in the world of today.

Wow, this is the kind of dialect the American population should be ingesting everyday. Two brilliant minds with excellent grammar. I subconsciously compared this to an interview with a young hip-hop/pop/entitled artist (pick any of them), and I'm not afraid to admit that I am terrified of the current and future music generations influence.

I implore you to watch Kendrick Lamar's interview with Rick Rubin. Not every music artist (from any generation) is going to be a well spoken, intelligent person but there are definitely some smart and thoughtful ones out there now (Frank Ocean, Parquet Courts, and Father John Misty also come to mind). Regardless, no need to be terrified about the music of a younger generation considering people were scared about rock/punk/hip-hop etc., people just want to hear new sounds regardless of the message.

@@troy8420 Agreed to a degree. Most "commercial pop" or whatever is generally written for the lowest common denominator. Stupid begetting more stupid and on down the line . . . I think, however, it's more and much deeper than music or anything. It's the when evil getting worse, and the light still coming through regardless. I think? Lol But God bless this gig the Dead and Company. And bless this new John and Bobby show. Lol 🤗

Thats honestly mainly just racist. Kendrick, J Cole, Jonwayne, Tyler the creator, Frank Ocean, Anderson Paak. All smart rappers that are under 30 years old. All genuine musicians

Frederic Flintstone it wasn't racist at all. race was never mentioned in his comment. in fact, take a look at the majority of 'pop' singers and you will realize most are white females. not everything is racist, you know. ;)

This is a colossally ponderous, boring seven minutes and 24 seconds of Weir and Mayer trying to philosophize narcissistically about what they do on stage, how sublime it is, how attuned they are to "the next plateau" and blah blah blah. It's their absolute reliance on generalities that makes this such a waste of time. If only they'd speak precisely about parts of songs, moments on stage and while rehearsing, and anything else concrete.

This interview with these two legends is a delightful experience and John Mayer’s input brings an ‘east coast’ sensibility to a west coast band to create a new dynamic. I cannot wait to see them perform in Europe hopefully not too long into the future with Mayer in the fold.

Bob calls John a Berklee boy, I think he thinks of Berkeley CALIFORNIA. It’s Berkelee College of Boston. Did someone suggest John bc of this? Anywho John is an academic player. In ways appropriate to cover the lead possibilities of grateful dead tunes. As a persona, na. Pop star celebrity, Jerry was a talker too, it was highly nutritious & frosted. John tryin a little hard here to SELL. Coverin all the bases. It became fashionable to be a dead head. I am not really a dead head. The music didn’t reach me until I was an adult. There were dead heads in junior high, only a few were COOL PEOPLE. Touch of Gray seemed old fashioned. It wasn’t. Just another song. Grateful Dead are simply a rock n roll country mustang group. Unlike all of their contemporaries. There’s no pretense or sanctimony like u get with the Who, no looking down through their Noble noses as with the Stones. No look at what we did from Paul McVeryImpressedwithmyself. Music for music. Guessing Jerry may have played more live dates than anyone else, other members of the dead may be close or maybe have done as many by now.

Bob I'm Sure John Mayer is Perfectly Capable and Articulate Enough to Answer for Himself? Maybe Set Your Pride Aside and Apreciate What a Saving Grace He is For The Band and Your Own Musical Future, Kinda Like Sharing the Microphone Which We All Know You have a Problem Doing.. Keep Groving and Improving..Right On

Just let it happen, you guys know. I thought the "50th shows" atleast on bobs end was to wound tight to scripted, all I thought was relax and let it flow guys! But none the less so glad the core four are still alive and well to play music. So sad to see Wasserman leave us, I know we must go sometime, but it's still hard. To me he made rat dogs sound unique. Keep on trucking fellas, glad your still here in the flesh to play to who ever will listen(~);}

Dexter Jones When Mayer was hosting the Late Late Show for a week or so, Bob played Althea with him as the musical act. Apparently that's what got everything in motion.
