Some performers just have that charisma that you cannot teach. He has that “IT” factor.

"Beyond The Sea" is the English-language version of the French song "La Mer" by Charles Trenet, popularized by Bobby Darin in 1959, and my favorite Bobby Darin song. I think it might end up being a new favorite you can both agree upon, after you hear it. Love

Yes indeed, Splish-Splash was played at every sock hop ball, and the poodle skirts flew, and the jellyroll haircuts bounced. When we were cruising the chicks down on Main Street and Bobby's song came on, the guys cranked it up and laid rubber for twenty yards. Happy days, and magic nights. Now, let Bobby take you on a sea cruise.

He was so charismatic. I enjoyed his movies, too. Beyond the Sea is my favorite Bobby Darin song.

Dick Clark was such a key music icon..Hosted "Bandstand" for 30-some years, and still found time for his weekly top 40 radio show aired nationwide AND hosted " Rock n Roll New Years Eve" for like, ever. Darin was smart to bring this song to Atlantic Records-They'd just lost Ray Charles to Columbia and needed a new hot act, and got one.Yes, Dominika, it was THE party song, shot straight to number 1.

Amazingly, Dick Clark is not part of the British rock/pop music experience because his show was never broadcast in the UK. Which was a great shame.

@@musik102 Sure was...I've seen lots of those British shows, and the hosts were always kinda lacking in charisma..Clark would've put 'em all outta work!

@ZzoeLittle Well, there were a series of pop/rock UK tv shows which were terrific. Firstly, they were live, unlike Dick's shows, and they were produced by Jack Good who was a terrific mover and shaker in the pop/rock world and was also a great lover of the music.

Thanks so much for the video. I remember singing along to this as a child. Yes, gum chewing was frowned on, and I don't know if 'dino-hands' is the proper dance term, but I have heard it used in such a way. ☮❤🎶

I watched Dick Clark all the time. I probably saw this show when it aired live.

I grew up during the early days of Rock and Roll and Doo Wop. The music was fun and about being in love. Thing is, I was from a small town. At that time much of America was in small towns. The only parties we had were things like birthday parties. I remember my older brother's 16th birthday party. I was about 10 years old at the time and was chased upstairs to bed. We had "parties" on the weekends with dances at the local armory and after football and basketball games in the gym (usually "sock hops" where we'd take off our tennis shoes and dance in our socks). On Saturday afternoons there was the local roller skating rink where we'd skate to the music and sometimes Saturday evening it would be opened up for a dance (and sometimes even a performer would show up). We had a lot to do. The music was fun. Everyone got along. So many of those with whom I graduated high school have moved away and are out of touch or have passed on as have the days. When the music got serious the fun disappeared.

I am not crazy about mid fifties R & R, but the innocence and optimism of the era is very heartwarming, and compares favorably to the troubled tomes my country is going through.

We were not allowed to chew gum in class too. If you were caught the teacher would either make you put it on your nose or ask if you brought enough gum for the whole class. Very embarrassing Lol

Next you should listen to Streisand's wild cover of "Splish Splash" from her 1979 album, Wet.

Bobby was definitely a great entertainer. But his personal life was not good. He was married to actress Sandra Dee and it was a very bad marriage. She said he was rude, brash, and always trying to get a reaction out of people. The marriage eventually ended in divorce. Prior to marrying Sandra Dee the had dated and wanted to marry Connie Francis (Connie recorded a song co-written by Darin called "My First Real Love") but her father did not like Darin at all. When Her father found out he was dating his daughter he went to the Jackie Gleason show with a gun where Darin was appearing on the show and tried to kill him. Bobby narrowly escaped out a window. They quit seeing each other after that incident but secretly wrote letters to each other for years.
