The name Steppenwolf derives from the 1927 novel, Steppenwolf, by German author Hermann Hesse, which captures his struggle with isolation and spirituality at the time. The novel takes its name from the German word for steppe wolf, a species of grey wolves that live near the Caspian Sea.

Steppenwolf, the name, was probably one of the greatest band brands ever. The name and the feelings it evokes was in sync with the band's sound and attitude. Steppenwolf was a thinking man's band...They were dark and moody and reflected the darkness and discontent that was going down on the streets in the 67-70 period...Their approach, perhaps, appealed to a subsegment of male listeners, which is probably why they're not as popular as say, Three Dog Night who had a more pop/young girl friendly audience...But Steppenwolf was real and they brought a lot to the party
