The name Steppenwolf derives from the 1927 novel, Steppenwolf, by German author Hermann Hesse, which captures his struggle with isolation and spirituality at the time. The novel takes its name from the German word for steppe wolf, a species of grey wolves that live near the Caspian Sea.

Another great band made in Canada (eh). The World was introduced to the band thanks to the movie Easy Rider, and their song Born to be Wild. Oh, back then FM radio was very new, and in order to get a song on AM, it had to be around 3 mins. A lot of songs got butchered to get on the radio.

Remember what was happening in the US in those days with the Vietnam War, counter culture, and psychedelic influence on music. That "static radio noise" is part of the psychedelic, (which IS ACID ROCK) sound of the day.

Steppenwolf was the name given to any of the two large canids - wolves and/or coyotes - by German settlers in the Great Plains region of the U.S. in the 1800's. It literally means "wolf of the steppes" (steppes being open grasslands)

Can't find that sound today without unplugging from modern equipment, takes a classic guitar and amp recorded on classic reel to reel only way to reproduce it ❤. No auto tune, no computer clean up. Steppenwolf, the name, was probably one of the greatest band brands ever. The name and the feelings it evokes was in sync with the band's sound and attitude. Steppenwolf was a thinking man's band...They were dark and moody and reflected the darkness and discontent that was going down on the streets in the 67-70 period...Their approach, perhaps, appealed to a subsegment of male listeners, which is probably why they're not as popular as say, Three Dog Night who had a more pop/young girl friendly audience...But Steppenwolf was real and they brought a lot to the party

I think that was a guitar chord with a super fuzz effect, not radio static but I could be wrong. If you're up for something heavy, try "The Pusher". That instrumental break on this version is a long series of acid-influenced solos on the album that were cut out for AM radio

Def psychedelic rock fer sure except if you dropped before listening then it was acid rock. It wouldn't have been unusual for me and my buddy to come home from school when mom was still at work, we'd spark up and donning headphones play songs like this over and over. Yeah, Magic Carpet Ride could've been a couple minutes longer.
