Andre Lilienthal vs Jose Raul Capablanca
"Andre the Giant" (game of the day Oct-12-2007)
Hastings (1934/35), Hastings ENG, rd 5, Jan-01
Nimzo-Indian Defense: Saemisch Variation. Accelerated (E24)
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. a3 Bc3 5. bc3 b6 6. f3 d5 7. Bg5 h6 8. Bh4 Ba6 9. e4 Bc4 10. Bc4 dc4 11. Qa4 Qd7 12. Qc4 Qc6 13. Qd3 Nbd7 14. Ne2 Rd8 15. O-O a5 16. Qc2 Qc4 17. f4 Rc8 18. f5 e5 19. de5 Qe4 20. ef6 Qc2 21. fg7 Rg8 22. Nd4 Qe4 23. Rae1 Nc5 24. Re4 Ne4 25. Re1 Rg7 26. Re4 Kd7
Of all the memorable Hastings tournaments, this one must rank near the top for suspense and unexpected twists. (1) The list of players was one of the most impressive in Hastings history, with former World Champion Capablanca, future champions Euwe and Botvinnik, championship contender Flohr, and the brilliant young Hungarian, Lilienthal.
The tournament had gotten off to a slow start, with only Thomas able to win in the first round. Then things picked up a bit, as Thomas proceded to outplay Capablanca and Botvinnik in rounds 2 and 3.
Euwe put a temporary halt to the foolishness by beating Thomas in round 4 to tie for the lead, and kept up the good work by following with three points from his next four games. However, this only sufficed for second place, since Thomas scored 3½, including a win over Lilienthal and a draw with Flohr.
So that set up the last round. Not only was Thomas having the tournament of his life, his last round opponent was fellow countryman Michell. In almost any other country, at any other time, the result would have been foreordained: a friendly draw, and Thomas finishes no worse than a tie for first. Indeed, many players had to be rooting for the universally beloved Thomas to win and come in sole first.
But that's not how Sir George Thomas played chess. The game was hard-fought, and Michell emerged victorious. But there was a happy ending; Max Euwe, in a better position against tail-ender Norman, made a sporting gesture of his own by offering a draw and settling for a first-place tie with Thomas and Flohr, who had been hanging around in the background the whole time.

From what I've read, Bobby Fischer never hated the Soviet players, he hated the Soviet system that governed them. After all, he was the only one to visit Tal when Tal was in the hospital during the Candidates. For Fischer to greet Lillienthal for a game that was played 40 or 50 years prior, plus the fact that he even knew the game, that's a class act for chess, even though he kind of went nuts on the rest of his thinking. Good video, as always.

Sir kindly show us the Games of "Mir sultan khan" From pakistan... Reason That When Sultan Khan first travelled to Europe his English was so rudimentary that he needed an interpreter. Unable to read or write, he never studied any books on the game, and he was put into the hands of trainers who were also his rivals in play. his playing strength during his five-year peak was equivalent to an Elo rating of 2530...

Why won't they pick up Star Trek after DS9? It would be easy to set up an interesting post-Dominion war scenario: the USS Misha is a medical ship, treating the wounded in the aftermath of war; we see the human cost as the federation must struggle to rebuild alliances and trust issues with their former allies fester following the end of the dominion war the paranoia of uncaptured shapeshifters persists. shapeshifter paranoia runs rampant as tests are set up to contain and "out" potential shapeshifters, friends denounce friends, everyone is suspicious of everyone else. a new balance of power emerges with the romulans as allies to the federation but they soon find out they were hoodwinked into the war and some extremists begin attacking the federation while the central government tries to contain it civil war breaks out on romulus where an anti federation dictatorship comes to power throw some crew members into the new team from the old romulus who are loyal to the regime that fell, they have to live with some trust issues with the federation after it's discovered they were hoodwinked into the war. you have show trials on cardassia for all the dominion collaborators and damar is starting to turn it into a personal dictatorship who is non-responsive to the federation's demands since they've been weakened by the war then you find out damar was actually killed and a shapeshifter has taken his place running cardassia. end episode 1. Anyone?
@Brandon-a-writer

game of thrones has done pretty well, a cultural phenomenon, and the least kid-friendly show possibly ever. such a trek could be what discovery is trying to be: a morally grey version of star trek. also i thought of reverand lovejoy's wife from the simpsons when you said that :D
