“BOBBY’ is an example of a ’SOUNDTRACK’ better than the “BOBBY” Film itself. Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s music really came to rescue Raj Kapoor and RK Films.

After the sudden and sad demise of Jaikishan and Shailender team Shankar Jaikishan was shattered and in great shock. Shankar ji was not in the best state of his mind and he almost lost the interest in making of films music. He used to say very often that he had nothings to prove now. Shankar refuse to sign new film for three years but complete 43 films which were signed by Jaikishan separately even Sippy saab wanted to sign Shankar ji for seeta aur Geeta and Sholley but Shankar ji denied politely. Raj Kapur was the only person who could have engaged Shankar ji musically but he rather choose to ditches Shankar ji on this crucial juncture. Shankar Jaikishan used to have a separate and exclusive recording room for themselves so raj Kapur has an easy access to them. Whenever Sj create any catchy tune raj Kapur used to book and own that tune with him. The making of bobby’s music was nothing but an open loot of Shankar Jaikishan composition as much as that once Laxmikant Pyarelal got very annoyed and said to raj Kapur that “jab shankar Jaikishan ke bank ki purani duno Se music banana hai toh for Shankar ji Se hi compose kyo nahi Kara lete ho””but raj Kapur was very tough task master some how he could adjust minimum five Shankar Jaikishan composition in bobby films music. Once in 1972 Filmfare interviews Shankar ji was asked about Laxmikant Pyarelal working with raj Kapur he smiled and said that “let Laxmi pyare should also know that how difficult is working with raj Kapur “” Raju Bharatan was a bitter critics of shankar Jaikishan he was pioneer in creating sangam controversy but whatever he said about bobby music was 100%right. Shankar by nature was very upfront and blunt. When Shankar came to know about raj Kapur deceit how he is using his compositions in bobby. Shankar met raj Kapur he in film function and start abusing raj Kapur left and right. The shrued and cunning raj Kapur took him a side before Shankar create scenes,he asked Shankar ji “genda Maharaj ye kya Kar raho ho bobby ko ban jaane do Agli film Yaani Satyam Shivam Sundram me toh hum saath kaam Kar hi rahe hai. So some how he could succeed keeping Shankar ji calm for a year or two. But raj Kapur never kept his promises and never worked with Shankar again. Raj Kapur always used to be very much part and parcel of team Shankar Jaikishan recordings but lata Mangeshkar put an veto that while recording a song for Raj Kapur films he is not allowed to enter in recording room. In a real incident of film Prem rog music recording Raj saab somehow could put his face in the door and requested lata Mangeshkar “ ji wo ji thoda allap gaa dijiyiega ye gaan bahut acha ban jaega late stared at him and said very rudely pura gaana hi alaap me gaa du toh” Laxmi pyare were great fans of Shankar Jaikishan music in person and they openly admitted many a times about their fondness for Shankar Jaikishan style of music. LP put their foot down strongly while making Prem rog and say categorically to raj Kapur that enough is enough they will not work on Shankar Jaikishan old composition any longer. This’s how LP stop working on Shankar Jaikishan tune for raj Kapur films. Every great things comes to end so were the music of Shankar Jaikishan but safely it could be inferred that Shankar Jaikishan were miles ahead of their counterparts in terms of orchestra arrangements,treatment of songs,using of chorus,title songs background music and many more musical experiments the did during their stay. They ruled the roost for more than two decades like a kings. I thank you for bringing the truth about the loot of Shankar Jaikishan composition while making the bobby films. Laxmi pyare were the lesser culprit compared to raj Kapoor,Mukesh and lata Mangeshkar.

Rakeshji, the way you tell the story is fabulous . You never miss even a small details. Information is well arranged and told. Bobby is one of the best film of the greatest showman of Hindi cinema, Raj Kapoor. Very difficult to point out what was not there in that film. It resonated with the young generation of that period and pulled Raj Kapoor out of heavy debt incurred after the debacle of Joker and Kal Aaj aur Kal. Unfortunately Shankar Jaikishan ( infact Shankar) were the victims for no fault of them. Music of Joker was the masterpiece and the reason of Joker's failure was something else. Laxmi Pyare did a marvelous job no doubt, but as you said, most of the songs had print of SJ. Laxmi Pyare could not achieve the height of SJ.

उस समय मैं 13 साल का था। कई लोगों (लड़के-लड़कियों) ने यह फ़िल्म 40-50 बार देखी थी। कई लड़के-लड़कियाँ मानसिक रोग से ग्रस्त हो कर अस्पतालों में भर्ती हो गये था। बॉबी जांघिया, बॉबी ब्रा, बॉबी बनियान, बॉबी साइकिल-सीट ..हर चीज़ का नाम "बॉबी" हो गया था।

They were the reason for Lathaji's popularity in the early days. Also, there are many legends about the 'legendary sense of Sur' of Raj Saab. He will add his own musical bits to the tunes prepared by his Music directors. 'Mein shayar ' song being the case in point. The mind blowing melody and it's most melodious interludes were the contributions by Raj Saab. Good to remember Bobby and it's music in its Golden Jubilee year is all the more welcome.

I have not watched the whole film though i saw some scenes. Raj kapoor didn’t need to show heroine in such 2 piece bikini costumes. Music was great and credit of course goes to laxmikant pyarelal. But overall a film could have been better and more appropriate if raj kapoor didn’t leave his stubbornness to show a heroine in revealing cloths all the time. For me it's an overrated film. There were much better films in 1973 that deserved to be top grosser of the year. Good for raj kapoor though that he managed to pay all his debts and got in better position after success of such film. Honest Opinion.
