Thats the navy. Granted they crossed over back and forth with all the ranks they named, but in the army, a captain is an O3 and normally in command of a company or around 200 troops. Captains in the navy are in charge of a ship, and the equivilant to a colonel in the army... who are normally in charge of brigades or regiments.

You usually don't address an officer by rank, just sir or ma'am. An example of when you would address them by rank is when there are many officers and you are requesting the attention of one of them then you say rank and last name. Primarily it is just enlisted that you address rank. Only time you have to is when they are a higher rank. You can of someone that is the same rank as a respectful thing but not required nor is it frowned upon if you don't
@WhySoManyPasswords
@WhySoManyPasswords Год назад
Uhhh… you should probably stick to one Branch of service. They went from Navy to Army. The ranks are totally different. A Captain in the Navy could be any line officer as long as he is in command of a ship. It also has the missing Commander rank. Navy guys are pompous where if your rank out ranks your title… they want to be called by their rank. A Commander rank is less than a Captain so they want to be called Capt. So-in-so. The opposite for an Admiral; they would want you to refer to them by their rank not title. Master Chief I always thought was more prestigious than C.O.B. Chief of the Boat… but watch how butt-hurt they get if you don’t call them COB.
@deathkorpsman
@deathkorpsman Год назад
Any rank officer, theoretically, can be a ships captain in the US Navy, although most of them are Captain rank as well. Any commissioned vessel, generally anything bigger than a motor boat, will call the leader of that vessel a captain even if their rank is lieutenant or commander. Admirals don't generally command individual ships, even an admirals command ship (it will have it's own Captain position), they command fleets or groups of ships. Unless you've been a sailor, Navy jargon is generally a bunch of gibberish but it serves a purpose. Same goes with other military branches to various degrees.

As a Marine this shit hurts. So imma learn y'all some shit. 4 marines in a fireteam. 4 fireteams per squad, 4 squads per platoon. 2 platoons per series (lead and follow). 2 Series per company. 4 companies per battalion. 4 battalions per regiment. 4 Regiments per division with a shit ton of divisions spread out across the marine corps, with some sub-unit structures like detachments, expeditionary forces; a whole mess of stuff. Now here's how the officers lead in order. 2nd lietenant leads a platoon. 1st lieutenant leads a series. Captains and majors interchangeably lead a company, as that role is a designated billet; a position to be filled and whomever is most qualified of the two ranks fills the billet. A Lietenant colonel or colonel leads a battalion as with captains and majors, battalion commander is also a billet. A brigadier general leads a regiment, a major general, lieutenant general or general (3 star general, highest officer rank) leads a division as division commander is again a designated billet and whomever is most qualified gets the billet. Commandant, who's rank is that of a 3 star general, commands the whole Marine Corps as commandant of the marine corps is also a billet, but a very very important one, arguably the most important billet in the entire marine corps. Thats the officer side of the command structure. A Corporal or Seargent leads a fireteam. Seargent or Staff Seargent leads a squad. Staff Seargent or Gunnery Seargent leads a platoon. Gunnery Seargent leads a series. Either a 1st Seargent or a Master Seargent leads a company, but the billet is that of "company 1st seargent". A Seargent Major leads a battalion, regiment and division. Seargent Major Of The Marine Corps leads the whole marine corps and is a seperate rank given to a Seargent Major who fills that billet. That is the enlisted side. Officers have more leadership authority than enlisted, regardless of rank or billet; though sentimentality is a different matter as a Seargent Major has more sentimental authority than a lowly lieutenant, although that is based on sentiments. Warrant Officers are a different matter entirely as they are enlisted who go through the warrant officer program to become specialized officers in their given MOS and can fill various different billets based on rank. In CBRN school, Chief Warrant Officer-5 Myrick (CWO-5 is the highest warrant officer rank) was the company commander instead of a captain or a major as he was and is a specialist in the field of CBRN. For those who don't know, CBRN is a small section of the marine corps, making up only around 700 marines at any given point in time. CBRN is an MOS field; a job field, so there's not many CBRN marines in the Marine Corps. A CBRN CWO-5 is practically a fucking unicorn in the Marine Corps; and CWO-5 myrick was our company commander. Nice guy too. Great attitude, good leadership skills and stellar skills and knowledge in CBRN related topics.

@IanLatham-jx2ec

You can be a rank other then captain and be called captain if you’re in charge of the ship. I don’t know if this applies to admirals though I believe you would still call them admiral
@paulgran7815

Admirals are still admirals, yes. If one is on a ship of his fleet, he has to command the ship he is on AND the other ships too.
@2bannedaccountscountingblo99
They're confused. Officers aren't tough & rough military members. Those days are gone. Now they're all weasely mini politicians. The only officers I trusted when I was in were the ones that didn't go straight to commissioned officer. Those who were enlisted prior were a thousand times better.
