reading all this comments a year later its insane how much the nba has changed. and its insane how much better the mavs got and now have a championship level team this year with a chnace to finally win the big one again.

I think it’s amazing that Dallas found TWO franchise-altering players in a trade on draft night. Luca five years ago and Dirk Nowitzki was traded on draft night from Milwaukee in 1998.

ESPN hasn’t hesitated to ridicule every Atlanta front office decision since the draft night trade. Meanwhile the Mavs have yet to add any reliable talent around Luka and it doesn’t look like that’s changing anytime soon. Hawks despite their FO turmoil have drafted, traded, and signed the appropriate talent needed around Trae. (Not that those additions have made the Hawks contenders yet). Mark Cuban needs to make Dallas a more player friendly environment because from the looks of it no stars care or desire to play with Luka.

Obviously Luka is better but I'm so tired of the disrespect tons of people, including some in this comment section are showing to Trae Young. Trae young led his team just as far as Luka has so far into their careers and Trae in a "down year" is still averaging 27 points and nearly 10 assists per game, he's made the all star team and made all nba. Luka is better but people need to stop acting like Trae is a scrub because he's not.

I find it funny how wrong Bobby was on this take. There are currently three players from Luka’s rookie year still on the team: Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber, and Dorian Finney-Smith. Not ZERO.

ESPN has a narrative against Trae and it’s BLATANT !!! Luka has had the same front office overhaul Trae has. They’re stats are almost identical. And Trae is a better 3pt shooter over his career. But ESPN won’t show that.

Trae Young went to Eastern conference final in 2021. Luka went to Western conference final in 2022. Still in the game

Trae is talked about with Ja, Donovan Mitchell, SGA & them (top 15-20). Luka is talked about with Giannis, Jokic, KD, Steph & them (top 3-5). They’re both good, but they’re in different tiers atp, so for now, we ain’t got to compare em lol

Bobby Marks actually got it totally backwards. It’s much harder to build around Trae who’s gifted but always undersized. And considering this is a league where size matters, Luka will always have that advantage, especially at his position where he’s physically bigger than nearly every other player in the league.

The All-NBA comparison doesn't do it justice. Luka was a 3x first team All-NBA ... That means he was a top5 player 3 years in a row. Trae was never even close to being a top5 player, even once.

They've statistically been the same player except for 5 rebounds a game in Luka's favor. Even with Luka reaching new heights I'd still make this trade as Atlanta, I just wouldn't draft Cam Reddish.

This trade doesn’t show the challenges of building around Luka. It’s shows the challenges of rebuilding around a generational talent. They had 1 first round selection before Luka, after his first season a team that still should have been rebuilding was thrust into playoff contention every season after. What should’ve been a 4-5 year rebuild accumulating assets really was only 1.5-2 years. They weren’t able to give Luka young high level prospects to all grow together due to traded picks and the team just excelling where they should’ve been due to Luka. Can’t blame the mavs they’ve done decent considering the circumstances

Luka has to play with a TRUE point guard and play off the ball more. When Lebron won its cause he had D-wade and Kyrie. He was more of a finisher even though he was best passer on the team. Right now he’s basically peak James Harden in Houston and we all know they got close but never over the top. Like is young enough to change his game. I think mavs should play him at Point forward instead of Point guard.

Everyone knew how great Luka was and he still fell in your lap at 3rd and you gave it away for 1 extra pick. Anyone who watched Luka in Real Madrid knew he was the next big thing. As a Fenerbahce fan it was crushing to see him win the Euroleague but you also knew this bs won’t continue for long because he would go to the NBA to play 2 decades there and terrorize NBA teams. He was clearly a generational talent and a guard-forward hybrid with his height which was what the league’s best players are right now and it even was like than back then. You took a nice flashy play guy that’ll make you a first round exit over the face of the league, someone who’ll end up in conversation for these top 10 debates. I know the Hawks made a Conference Finals but they got the luckiest path you could have gotten that year. The league will continue to push this “Luka is god” narrative. Dallas with better talent that the less experienced Hawks team has not done any better. Until getting DJ Murray this year, which brings some of his stats down, the Hawks had never had a player on the level of some of the Dallas players, yet their records since the trade aren’t that different.
